How We Chose the Best Mattresses for Heavy People
I’m one of the lead product testers for Sleep Advisor, and as part of my job, I get to try out these beds first-hand, evaluating important performance features to help break down whether a bed is good and who should get it.
For this roundup, our team chose mattresses with features that are especially important for plus-size people, including overall support.
Along with the usual categories we test for, our team put together a list of additional qualities we think are valuable in a bed if you’re a plus-size sleeper and utilized the advice of Dr. Raj Dasgupta, our Chief Medical Advisor, on what heavyweight sleepers should look for in mattress.
What We Want to See in a Mattress for Heavyweight Sleepers
Enhanced Support Systems
You’ll find that many mattresses on this list are made with specialized, highly durable materials aimed at delivering more advanced support, whether that be through denser foams or stronger coils. Multiple beds on this list are also specifically marketed toward plus-size sleepers, showing a genuine effort from brands to target the needs of this group.
Thicker Construction
Another important quality is that the mattress is thicker to help ensure the sleeper doesn’t bottom out. A heavyweight sleeper will naturally sink more into a bed, which is why it’s vital the layers of a mattress are thick enough that they don’t leave the sleeper unsupported and uncomfortable.
Medium or Firmer Feel
You’ll find that the mattresses on this list have at least a medium to medium-firm feel. Though firmness isn’t indicative of support, firmer beds are often more beneficial for heavier sleepers to help them remain more lifted.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People Overall
The Emma Hybrid Comfort is a hybrid bed with two claims to fame: it’s supportive enough for plus-sized people, and it’s especially good for couples. We gave it our top spot because of its sturdiness, super lift, and affordability, all of which make it a boon for heavy sleepers.
Under its moisture-wicking cover, the Hybrid Comfort has three relatively thin layers of specialized foams followed by a sturdy innerspring unit. This gives it a firmer feel that should benefit plenty of plus-size sleepers. Our Lead Product Tester, Julia, gave it a 7/10 on our firmness scale and especially enjoyed how supportive it felt while she was lying on her stomach.
What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?
The Emma Hybrid Comfort has six total layers and a 13-inch profile.
Its moisture-wicking cover is also soft to the touch. Underneath, its first layer of Airgocell® foam has an open-cell structure that renders it less dense and less hot than other poly foams. It also helps to relieve pressure from sensitive joints. The following two foam layers are designed to prevent motion transfer and provide extra firmness and support, respectively.
The Hybrid Comfort’s spring unit was engineered to support all body types as well as encourage air circulation. These coils reach the perimeter of the bed, giving it commendable edge support.
A stabilizing foam base sits at the bottom of the bed. Emma also outfitted the Hybrid Comfort with an anti-slip bottom cover for easy transportation and positioning.
Customer Reviews on the Emma Hybrid Comfort
This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

Why the Helix Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People with Lower Back Pain
Formerly introduced as the Nightfall, the Helix Plus uses higher-density foams and thicker coils than other models in the brand’s lineup. It should feel particularly comfortable for heavy people with back pain, as it expertly balances pressure relief with noteworthy support.
“Most mattresses aren’t built to provide the support that plus-size people need, especially not in the middle section,” said Sean, one of our mattress testers. “That means their hips are sagging all night … [but] the Helix Plus is built to improve back pain and stand the test of time.”
What’s the Helix Plus Made Of?
If you count its cover, the Helix Plus has five layers, and it’s 11.5 inches tall. It comes outfitted with a cover made from TENCEL™, a breathable fabric derived from wood pulp.
Underneath is a layer of Helix Responsive Foam, which provides just enough plushness for comfort while preventing you from sinking too deep into the bed. It’s followed by a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, a firmer material with a springiness akin to that of latex foam.
Next is the coil unit. The TitanCore springs in the Helix Plus are heavy-duty, having been designed to support more weight than the springs in other Helix mattresses. They’re also thicker around the entire perimeter of the bed.
Finally, a base layer of DuraDense foam lines the bottom of the mattress.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Plus
With a 4.4 out of 5 stars on Helix’s site, customers mostly seem satisfied and praise the bed for its firmness and ability to relieve pain. However some complaints have involved the mattress not providing sufficient cooling properties for those who sleep hot.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Back Sleepers
The Titan Plus is a considered response to the needs of plus-sized sleepers. It’s built to be sturdy, responsive, and cool, with a hybrid design that marries foam with extra-strong coils. Its edge support and 1,000-pound weight capacity make it a popular bed for couples, as well.
According to our testers, this mattress doesn’t sink too low, contours well to the lower back, and keeps your spine comfortably straight—all chief considerations for back sleepers. One plus-sized reviewer, Patrick, noted that the Titan Plus stood out amongst the competition: “Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable.”
What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?
The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall and has five layers.
Its first layer is a 1-inch-thick sheet of gel memory foam. Even as it molds to your silhouette, it should resist forming deep impressions that feel restrictive. The gel component also helps to keep the top of the bed cool.
Next is a 2-inch layer of TitanFlex™ foam that takes additional pressure off of your contact points with the bed. It’s followed by a 6-inch coil unit with thicker springs around the perimeter for palpable edge support.
At the bottom of the mattress is a 2-inch base layer of high-density foam. The above-average thickness of this foundation cushions the springs and gives the entire bed a strong anchoring point.
Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the WinkBed Plus Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Heavy People
WinkBed mattresses are known for their superior lumbar support and handcrafted details. The WinkBed Plus is a variant that prioritizes the needs of larger sleepers, incorporating a high-density, anti-sag foam and a zoned layer of latex over its coil unit.
Our plus-sized reviewer, Sean, very much appreciated the thought that went into the WinkBed Plus. He complimented its cooling features, its soft pillow top, and the amount of support that the hybrid design lent his body. “Overall, this is an excellent mattress, especially if you’re a heavier sleeper like myself,” he concluded.
What’s the WinkBed Plus Made Of?
The WinkBed Plus is about 13.5 inches tall. At its top is a breathable Tencel© cover derived from Eucalyptus wood pulp, and manufactured with sustainability and water conservation in mind.
Like all WinkBeds, the Plus features a Euro pillow top that provides initial cushioning with gel-infused foam before transitioning into more supportive layers of foam. But those foams have a higher density in this model—in fact, according to the brand, their anti-sag foam is more than 50% denser than the kind you’d encounter in a traditional innerspring bed.
The Plus also distinguishes itself from other WinkBeds by including a latex foam layer. This responsive material has been divided into seven distinct zones that give differing amounts of pushback depending on the part of the body they’re supporting.
The coil unit in this mattress is also zoned, and its reinforced springs can easily buoy heavier bodies. They’re stronger around the edges as well, so you should be able to utilize the bed’s entire surface area.
What We Liked
- Handcrafted to last – The WinkBed Plus is thicker than most beds sold online, and even at first blush, our tester Emma remarked that it appears “super durable and very hardy.” Sean also pointed out its “high quality, handcrafted construction” as a noticeable perk.
- Firm, but with a plush introduction – “I was pleasantly surprised by the WinkBed Plus,” said Mark, another of our testers. Typically, firmer mattresses contribute to pressure build-up in his shoulders, but “that didn’t happen with this bed. It has a nice big pillow top that really relieves that pressure and gives you a nice minimal cradle” before segueing into it signature firmness.
- Sturdy edges – The ExtraEdge™ support provided by WinkBed is top-of-the-line. If you want to optimize your space next to a partner or enjoy sitting on the side of your bed, you’ll dig it. “I could lay right up on the edge of this bed without feeling like I was going to fall off or have my sleeping compromised in any way,” said Emma.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for lighter sleepers – The WinkBed Plus truly was designed to suit larger bodies, so those who are more petite or average-sized might find it a little unyielding. “I didn’t get to take advantage of all those wonderful transition layers,” said Emma, who weighs around 140 pounds.
- Higher price – Because of its specialized features, the WinkBed Plus costs a few hundred dollars more than the standard WinkBed. A queen will typically run you close to $2,000.
Customer Reviews on the WinkBed Plus
With a score of 4.8 out of 5 stars the WinkBed Plus is a hit with sleepers seeking a firm and supportive mattress. Customers appreciate the WinkBed Plus mattress for its exceptional support for heavier individuals, but some have mentioned that it may be too firm for those seeking a softer sleep surface.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Innerspring Mattress for Heavy People
Quality spring systems are synonymous with support in a bed, and as the brand that pioneered the “online luxury innerspring,” Saatva knows its coils. It’s no surprise that their flagship model, the Saatva Classic, brings the A-game.
For one, it features two innerspring units: a zoned layer of pocketed coils and a more traditional interconnected innerspring. This bolsters support and overall longevity of the mattress, making it a great fit for plus-size folks who need a bed that’ll last. It also boasts a number of luxurious features to sweeten the deal, including targeted lumbar support, a sumptuous pillow top, and free white glove delivery.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
The Saatva Classic is either 11.5 or 14.5 inches tall. It comes in Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm models.
Its first layer is a 3-inch Euro pillow top that eases sleepers into the bed with plush foam. But even in this topmost part of the bed, lumbar support comes into play: the cover is quilted to provide more support beneath the lower back.
Next is a layer of high-density memory foam that only occupies that same middle region, just under the lumbar spine. It leads into the first of the bed’s two coil systems, a layer of thinner pocketed springs that compress to align with your silhouette. Here, too, the coils are extra-supportive in the lumbar region.
Underneath the first set of coils is the second set. These springs are interconnected and supremely durable, with a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire incorporated into their design. The wire encircles the lumbar region to give extra lift to that crucial zone.
Around the edges of the Saatva Classic, a frame of high-density foam keeps sleepers from dipping too low when they roll close to the sides.
Customer Reviews on the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Heavy People
The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ is an upgraded version of the popular Nolah Evolution. With the addition of denser foams and stronger springs, it can support up to 1,000 pounds of weight. Most impressively, its strength is coupled with a luxurious softness, which can be a hard balance to strike in a bed made for plus-sized people.
“While it may be on the softer side, I do feel like there is still more than enough support to be gleaned from the mattress,” said Julia, our lead product tester. As a tall stomach sleeper, she was also pleased by how this bed combined plushness and lift.
What’s the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ Made Of?
The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ has seven stacked layers and stands 14 inches tall.
Its cover is made of organic cotton and ArcticTex™ fibers that guard against overheating. The first comfort layer is a 2-inch quilted Euro topper with pressure-relieving foam that gives the mattress its notable softness.
Underneath is a 2-inch layer of AirFoam™ HD. This temperature-neutral foam doesn’t hold onto heat in the same way as traditional memory foams, and its structure features air pockets that assist with both breathability and weight distribution. It’s a denser foam than the standard Evolution’s AirFoamICE™—a nod to this mattress’s suitability for heavy people. Around the Euro topper and this upper comfort layer, a vented gusset allows for cooling airflow.
The next two layers consist of a high-resilience foam and a transition foam. These layers prevent sagging, up the bed’s responsiveness, and keep sleepers from feeling the metal springs below.
The Evolution Comfort+ has thicker coils than the Evolution. The springs are also grouped into three support zones for targeted pushback under the lumbar spine, and reinforced along the bed’s perimeter.
Finally, a base layer of recycled plant fiber rounds out the bed with an eco-friendly foundation.
Customer Reviews on the Nolah Evolution Comfort+
The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Nolah’s website. Some customers have mentioned how the Comfort+ gives them some cradling while remaining supportive, with several people praising this bed for alleviating their back pain.

Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Firm Mattress for Heavy People
As its name suggests, the Plank Firm doesn’t mince words—it’s a very firm bed for people who don’t like to sink into their sleeping surface. That kind of feel can be uncompromising without being uncomfortable, and it’s especially beneficial for heavy people who need a solid support base.
The Plank’s dual-sided design makes it versatile even as it’s committed to being one of the firmest beds on the market. Additionally, it’s an all-foam bed, so it shouldn’t be as pricy as many of the other beds in this roundup.
What’s the Plank Firm Mattress Made Of?
The Plank Firm is 9.5 inches tall with four layers. Because it’s a flippable mattress, its two sides differ slightly in their composition.
The Firm side has a 0.75-inch quilted top with the slightest bit of lift and cushioning to it. It’s followed by a 2-inch later of TitanFlex™ comfort foam, which is firmer and more responsive than memory foam while still boasting contouring properties.
The Extra-Firm side has a 0.75-inch quilted top as well, but the stitching on it is continuous, thereby flattening it even more than the Firm side’s top. There’s no TitanFlex™ foam layer beneath it—instead, it leads straight into the mattress’s 6-inch core of high-density support foam.
For an additional fee, you can have a cooling cover added to both sides of the mattress.
Customer Reviews on the Plank Firm
On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People and Muscle Recovery
The Bear Elite Hybrid mixes foams, zoned coils, and advanced performance textiles to great effect. Its hybrid construction should be supportive enough for larger bodies, and it’s also replete with cooling components—both of our testers, Stuart and Sydney, commented on how noticeably cool it felt.
Its most unique feature, however, is its cover. It’s made with Celliant®, a performance textile that reportedly converts body heat into infrared light, which in turn helps to boost blood flow and reduce tissue inflammation in the areas that contact the fabric. In layman’s terms, the cover may help with recovery after a workout or an active day.
What’s the Bear Elite Hybrid Made Of?
The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches tall and has five layers if you count its cover.
The hand-quilted cover contains both Celliant®—a performance textile that may help your body recover more quickly after exercise—and phase change material.
The latter keeps the top of the mattress cool as the molecules inside it change their state from a solid to a liquid, siphoning warmth away from you as they transition.
Next is a layer of copper-infused memory foam. The copper inside the foam is another cooling element, as well as an antibacterial safeguard. Underneath, a layer of transition foam offers a slightly firmer feel along with additional pressure relief.
After the above comfort layers comes the coil unit. It’s zoned so that thicker, stronger coils occupy the region beneath the lower back, where most people need enhanced support. It also has reinforced springs along its edges.
Finally, a base layer of high-density foam keeps the bed stable.
Customer Reviews on the Bear Elite Hybrid
According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Side Sleepers
Plus-sized side sleepers have to navigate a delicate balance when mattress-shopping. They’ll want a bed that’s not too firm, lest their shoulders and hips feel too pressurized; but they’ll also need enough support to keep them from sinking too deeply into the layers.
According to our testers, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe should rise to the challenge. It’s a hybrid bed that comes in a Firm, Medium, or Soft feel, enabling you to find the sweet spot that will soothe your hips and shoulders while providing the right amount of lift.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe has six layers and stands 13 inches tall. Its cover has GlacioTex™ fibers that help to pull body heat away from you, and its first foam layer is likewise accomplished at cooling. It’s a 1.5-inch sheet of CopperFlex™ foam that features phase change material—that is, a substance that readily absorbs heat due to its high thermal conductivity.
The CopperFlex™ foam is reminiscent of latex, with more springiness to it than memory foam. It’s followed by a layer of comfort foam that responds to movement by adaptively molding to the shape of your silhouette in each new position.
The next layer depends on which version of the mattress you buy. In the Firm version, there’s a 1.5-inch layer of VariFlex™ transition foam that prioritizes support.
In the Medium and Soft versions, there’s a 1-inch layer of gel swirl memory foam for more cushioning.
Next is the bed’s coil unit, which is zoned to accommodate the different support needs of different body parts. It’s backed up by a 0.75-inch high-density foam foundation.
Customer Reviews on the Aurora Luxe
On Brooklyn Bedding’s site, the Aurora Luxe has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers praise the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress for its advanced cooling features, but some have mentioned that it is relatively expensive compared to other options.

100 nightsWhat To Consider When Shopping for a Mattress As a Heavier Person
Although there are general standards that can help anyone choose a new bed, people who weigh more than 200 pounds have a unique set of considerations when it comes to their mattress needs. Addressing these factors can mean the difference between restless slumber and peaceful comfort.
Materials and Durability
If you’re a larger person, finding mattresses constructed with high-quality materials is a must.
What do we mean by high-quality materials? If you’re looking at foam mattresses, make sure the foam is CertiPUR-US® certified and that the support layers have a reasonably high density. Fans of traditional innerspring mattresses (those constructed with coils) will want a mattress with a relatively high coil count and a low coil gauge (meaning the springs are thicker). Those wanting to bring a latex mattress home should make sure that the manufacturer can speak to the sourcing, composition, and longevity of their latex layers.
Cheaper mattresses are usually made with lower-quality materials, which can result in sagging and discomfort, both of which tend to happen sooner for heavier folks than lightweight ones. When these problems set in, you may have to replace the bed much sooner than you’d like. Looking into the materials and durability of a given mattress should ensure that you don’t have to repeat the mattress-shopping process too often.
Weight Capacity
Many mattress manufacturers will list the bed’s weight capacity online as part of its specifications. (For example, Saatva HD mattresses that are full-sized or larger can support 500 pounds on either side of the mattress.)
Larger people should look for a bed that will accommodate their weight and potentially a partner’s. If the bed’s weight capacity is hard to find, you can try contacting the manufacturer to ask about it. We’ve tried to prioritize mattresses on the list above that have inclusive weight limits and proudly market to heavyweight people.
Thickness
If you are less than 200 lbs, a 10-inch tall bed will likely be sufficient. If you weigh more than this, you may want to consider a bed with a profile of at least 12 inches and substantial compression support. Taller beds are indicative of more or thicker layers which can allow heavier people to transition through the layers at a proper rate. However, keep in mind that some products offer extra thick layers that provide enough support even at 10-11 inches.
Firmness
Although firmness is subjective, certain factors can be used to determine how soft or hard most people will find a given mattress. Generally, heavier people typically find that medium to medium-firm beds serve them best.
In addition to your weight, your preferred sleeping position is one of the main factors that can help you determine your ideal firmness level. A higher weight tends to create more sinkage and hug. By sinking too far into a mattress1, your spine may not be aligned properly, which can cause pain. If a mattress hugs you too much, it may make you feel stuck, and it can cause pressure to build up.
Expect an additional 1-2 inches of sinkage if you are over 230-250 pounds. You can help to compensate for the extra sinkage by choosing a mattress that is 7-8 out of 10 on the Sleep Advisor mattress firmness scale.
Sleeping Position
To find the mattress that best meets your needs, you will need to consider more than just your size and shape. You will also need to consider what sleep position(s) you prefer. Weight is distributed differently depending on how you like to sleep, and you’ll likely need to consider different support and comfort options depending on the sleep position you like.
Side
For side sleepers, pressure relief is key because, in this position, your full body weight is pressing into the mattress along a narrower surface area. For many sleepers in this position, a plusher bed is a better match because the softness allows all their weight to sink in and conform to their curves to minimize pressure.
Heavier folks, however, should ensure that their weight will not cause them to push through the softer materials too quickly. Although firmer beds can cause pressure build-up, they may still be better suited for larger side sleepers.
Back
The kind of mattresses that are best for heavier back sleepers will likely largely depend on where they carry their weight. Some back sleepers like a firmer bed that puts a greater emphasis on support, but a firmer bed may not be as comfortable for some, especially those with pain points to consider. You’ll want to look for the right balance to cradle your shape while also supporting your lumbar and spine alignment.
Our in-depth guide: Best Beds For Back Sleepers
Stomach
Heavier folks, in particular, need to be mindful of stomach sleeping as beds that are not firm enough can leave their hips uncomfortably dipped inside the mattress. This can make it difficult for the spine to remain in a neutral position. If you carry most of your weight in your hips and abdomen, you’ll likely want to steer towards firmer beds.

Combination
If you like to mix up your sleep positions, you’ll want to consider beds that are aimed at versatility. Additionally, you’ll want to take a mattress’s bounce and reactivity into account—mattresses that have high bounce and good reactivity make it easier to reposition through the night.
Combo sleepers may not enjoy softer beds, as these properties may make you feel “stuck” in the bed.

Best Mattress Types for Heavy People
There are many types and materials on the market today, each with pros and cons. In this section, we’ll break down the major bed types (memory foam, latex, innerspring, and hybrid) and how they can affect sleep for heavy people.
Memory Foam
According to many large sleepers, memory foam is one of the best bed types out there. Why?
Memory foam mattresses, whether on the hard or soft side, are designed to even out pressure points. One of the biggest complaints that heavier sleepers have is that certain areas of their body end up hurting (i.e., their back or hips). Memory foam works to provide balanced support that contours the body.
Despite the numerous benefits, this mattress style can cause people to feel hot due to the lack of breathability in the material. Worry not because there are some great cooling memory foam options on the market today.
Latex
For bigger people, latex mattresses are a solid option. Latex is made from the sap of rubber trees, and this process creates a mattress that promotes breathability as well as bounce and support.
Unlike many traditional foam mattresses, latex’s breathability helps keep you cool through the night. Latex mattresses are also known to be durable and more responsive than other foams, which could be helpful for combination sleepers and sexually-active couples.
Innerspring
Mattresses that contain innersprings often work well for heavier people because the coils provide solid, balanced support.
Furthermore, the coils also often offer solutions to many of the common mattress complaints echoed by larger sleepers – including an unsupported mid-section and a lack of edge support. The coils also allow air to move freely through the mattress, which addresses another common problem of larger sleepers – overheating through the night.
Hybrid
As the name suggests, a hybrid mattress is simply the combination of two or more types of material. Hybrid mattresses are often a good choice for heavyweight sleepers because they provide the soft contouring of memory foam with the support and bounce of innerspring mattresses. These mattresses also tend not to run as hot as traditional all-foam beds because of the breathability that the coils provide.
Bed in a Box
Many newer mattress models are being sold online and go through a compression process that allows them to be roll-packed into smaller boxes for easier shipping. This process greatly reduces overhead, and many bed-in-a-box brands can offer pretty outstanding savings and value for their price.
To help facilitate this boxing process, however, these brands use materials that can be compressed. Folks with heavier weight considerations should evaluate brands carefully for manufacturer-recommended weight limits and features that can offer them the additional support they might require. Boxed brands with zoned support systems, foam and coil hybrids, firmer materials, or extra height might be a better match.
You should not believe, however, that your weight considerations preclude you shopping for your mattress online. Many online brands specifically target higher weight concerns by not compressing their product, and there are bed-in-a-box brands with added details that should support your frame just as comfortably as an in-store model.

Preference-Based Features for Heavyweight Sleepers
Cooling and Temperature Regulation
One of the most common complaints from larger folks is that they get too hot during sleep. It usually happens when your mattress doesn’t have enough room to breathe and to provide enough air circulation.
In most cases, foam material “sleeps hot” compared to latex, innerspring, and hybrids. These days, this problem can usually be solved by seeking out mattresses constructed with more premium products.
Many mattress companies implement cooling properties, such as gel infusion, breathable covers, and perforated foam, that will help keep sleepers cool during their slumber. Considering that sleeping hot is a common complaint even amongst lighter and average-weight sleepers, many manufacturers now offer specialized “cooling” beds to improve airflow properties and heat distribution.
Edge Support
Beds that are supportive from edge to edge are often favorable for heavier people because it allows them to utilize the whole bed without fear of rolling off. This can be especially good for people who co-sleep or just toss and turn across the bed. It is also beneficial if you sit on the edge of the bed when you are getting dressed.
Solid edge support generally indicates improved durability and quality construction. Hybrid and coil-on-coil construction have historically provided great mattress edge support.
Couples
Different body sizes require different blends of comfort and support, and a bed with enough support for a heavier person may feel like a rock for someone who is much lighter. Couples who are very different may consider a brand that offers dual-sided firmness so that each partner may select what works best for them.
If both you and your partner are substantially heavier than average, you do have a handful of options out there. In recent years, the online market has introduced beds designed specifically for heavier folks with enhanced support systems and durability.

Foundations and Frames
In some cases, a mattress is only as good as its foundation, so if you’re using a simple box spring or slatted base with a memory foam bed that requires a solid foundation, you might not be getting the best support possible out of your bed. In worse cases, you could be putting yourself in danger.
Keep in mind that the manufacturer’s recommendation usually isn’t just a suggestion, it’s necessary for the proper support of your bed. Using the wrong foundation could even void a mattress warranty. It may not be a bad idea to look into foundations offered by the same company you buy your mattress from to see what they recommend.

Pillows
Finding the right kind of pillow may also encourage better rest for heavier folks. Specialty pillows such as long body pillows and shorter knee pillows are designed to go between your legs to help spinal alignment and alleviate pressure and pain.
If you’re a heavier sleeper who suffers from snoring, sleep apnea, or acid reflux, you want to check out a wedge pillow. These are triangle-shaped pillows made with firmer foam. The elevated top and tapered bottom keep heads elevated, and this may reduce snoring and relieve sleep apnea and heartburn. Those who sleep hot can try out a cooling pillow. These pillows often use cooling technology, such as infusing gel into memory foam or latex.
Mattress Toppers
Considering that heavier people often find firmer beds to be more suitable for supporting them, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to sleep on a rock-like bed if that is not what they prefer. One way to add comfort and softness to a mattress that will still benefit from the stability that comes with firmer models is to add a mattress topper.
When shopping for a topper, those with weight considerations may want to look for those made with high-density memory foam or latex. These toppers may be more expensive than others, but they are generally more supportive and durable.

Additional Mattress Buying Tips for Heavyweight Sleepers
Make Use of the Sleep Trial
Online mattress brands typically offer extensive trial periods in which you can try out the mattress at home and return it if you don’t like it. Most sleep trials are at least 100 nights, which is plenty of time to truly see whether a mattress meets your needs and expectations. Some companies even over sleep trials that last as long as a year.
Keep Track of When It’s Time to Replace Your Bed
No matter your size, a mattress will eventually wear over time. In general, most mattresses need to be replaced every seven years, though this timeline may be slightly longer or shorter depending on how it’s used and the specific construction. If you’re finding that the mattress you have is longer supporting you well, then it’s likely time for a new bed.
Mattress for Heavy People FAQs
What mattress firmness is the best for heavy people?
Heavy people typically feel most comfortable on a firm or medium-firm mattress. These firmness levels provide the level of support that a larger body needs, whereas a softer bed may result in too much sinkage and the sensation of being “stuck” in the mattress.
If you like soft mattresses or you sleep on your side, you can opt for a mattress that provides cushioning top layers as well as a supportive foundation. You can also look into mattress toppers that will up the initial plushness of your bed.
What is the best mattress for a heavy person?
Currently, a few of our favorite mattresses for heavy people include the Titan Plus and the Helix Plus. The best mattress for a large person will prioritize supportive features, which usually consist of high-density or latex foams and pocketed coils. Many modern hybrid mattresses have both of these elements in addition to the cooling technology.
If you’re shopping for a mattress as a heavy person, we recommend looking at hybrids first and checking the weight capacity of each bed you’re considering.
What mattresses are best for heavy people with back pain?
Heavy people with back pain should likely look at mattresses that combine robust support with a top layer that provides excellent pressure relief. Hybrid mattresses with a high coil count and a foam comfort layer that contours to the body are good bets.
Perhaps counterintuitively, you don’t want your mattress to be too soft if you’re experiencing back pain. With that said, firm and medium-firm mattresses that can support your spine are best1.
Is a thicker mattress better for heavy people?
Those who weigh in at 200 pounds or more will likely want to consider a taller mattress. Generally, mattresses with a profile of 12 inches or more are better fits for heavy people because the height indicates more or thicker support layers. This helps those on the larger side transition through the layers at a proper weight instead of crashing through too quickly.
Can a heavy person sleep on a bed in a box?
Yes, bigger people certainly can sleep on and enjoy a bed-in-a-box, as long as the mattress has the proper support and comfort components. Many online mattress brands have designed models that cater specifically to plus-size customers, and they still ship these beds by first compressing them into boxes.
Just as you would with any mattress purchase, you should investigate the quality and durability of the materials in your bed-in-a-box order. But just because a mattress comes in a box does not mean it’s lower quality than a bed purchased from a brick-and-mortar store; in fact, these mattresses are often some of the most modern and advanced available.
Can weight gain cause sleep apnea?
According to research, having a larger body can put one at risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea2. This is because the softer tissues in your mouth and throat can obstruct your breathing, which affects your oxygen levels and sleep.
One of the most common suggestions for reducing the symptoms of OSA is weight loss. Unfortunately, it all creates a frustrating cycle because insufficient sleep can cause you to gain weight, and the added weight can make your condition worse. Intervention by a doctor for one or both of these conditions should put you on the road to recovery.
