Who We Recommend The Helix Midnight For:

  • Classic hybrid fans – The Helix Midnight mattress has a classic hybrid design, featuring a coil unit underneath two foam layers. This design allows for a balance of pressure relief and support needed in many sleeping positions.

  • People with back pain – This mattress has a medium-firm feel and durable coils that should provide sufficient support to the lower back, helping to ease the pain in this area.

  • Average-weight people – Sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should find the Helix Midnight comfortable, especially when sleeping on their back. However, keep in mind that those closer to 230 pounds may experience it to be softer than those closer to 130 pounds.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Helix Midnight For:

  • Restless sleepersRestless sleepers who share a bed may disturb their partner because this hybrid doesn’t have the best motion isolation when compared to memory foam mattresses. Although it has individually-wrapped coils and two foam layers, this may not be enough when someone tosses and turns all night.

  • Heavy stomach sleepersStomach sleepers weighing above 230 pounds need ample support to prevent the hips from sinking in too deeply. For this reason, many stomach sleepers in this group may find the Helix Midnight mattress too soft, which could comprise their lower back.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6-7/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

The firmness of the Helix Midnight mattress is 6-7 out of 10. Firmness ratings are based on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the hardest. This rating means that the Helix Midnight mattress falls around medium to slightly firm, which should be a good match for many sleepers.

This firmness level is typically the best for back sleepers because it provides good support for the lower back and shoulders. The mattress distributes your weight evenly to prevent any pressure from building up. In addition, it should feel good for heavier side sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers.

How Does The Helix Midnight Mattress Feel?

The Helix Midnight feels a bit on the firmer side. When you first lie on it, you can feel the contouring memory foam layer under the cooling cover. The foam has a medium feel, while the transition layer underneath has a firmer feel to prevent you from bottoming out.
The cover feels cool and stretchy, which indicates it can take a lot before it shows signs of wear and tear.

What We Like About the Helix Midnight

  • Pressure relief – Helix Midnight’s use of memory foam in its construction is beneficial for those who need good pressure relief. Memory foam is considered one of the best materials for pressure relief because of its ability to conform to the sleeper’s body, reducing pressure build-up.

  • High-quality materials – Helix Midnight uses plenty of high-quality materials in its construction. The bed’s memory and poly foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, and the coils are made of steel for good durability.

  • Edge support – Edge support benefits couples and individuals who prefer more space to spread out. The Helix Midnight provides edge support by adding thicker-gauge coils lengthwise, which should ensure the bed doesn’t sink too much along the edges.

Our Helix Midnight Complaints

  • Too firm for side sleepersSide sleepers usually prefer softer beds that allow a bit more sinkage than the Helix Midnight. The bed is medium to slightly firm, which may be too much for those who sleep on the side, especially if they weigh above 130 pounds.

  • No all-foam design – Hybrids provide plenty of benefits like extra support and cooling, but people who enjoy the feel of an all-foam bed may prefer a different mattress.

Testing the Helix Midnight Mattress: How it Performed

Testing the Helix Midnight mattress allowed us to evaluate how it feels in different sleeping positions. This way, we’re able to tell whether or not this mattress would fit a certain group of people based on their weight and preferred sleeping position.

In addition, we also tested for motion isolation, edge support, bounce, and cooling. By checking for these preference-based features, we can help figure out if the Helix Midnight is a good option for couples, hot sleepers, combination sleepers, and people with mobility issues.

Sleeping Positions and Body Types

Helix claims their beds can support up to 1,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds per side. However, one thing to keep in mind is that the Helix Midnight will feel differently depending on how much you weigh. In other words, people weighing under 130 may find it firmer than people weighing more than 230 pounds.

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★☆☆★★☆★★★
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★★★★★★★☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★★★★☆★☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – The Helix Midnight may feel too firm for people weighing less than 130 pounds who prefer sleeping on their side.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should find a good balance of pressure relief and support. However, those weighing under 150 might like a slightly softer mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy sleepers usually experience this mattress as softer, which makes it a good option for those who like sleeping on their side.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Most lightweight back sleepers should like the support the Helix Midnight provides. However, some may be too lightweight to activate the upper layers, which can result in pressure building up in the lower back.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should experience just enough sinkage for pressure relief without taking away from the support level.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers should sink deeper in the first foam layer, which should help relieve pressure build-up. However, this might take away from the support level for those weighing well above 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers weighing under 130 pounds should feel on top of the mattress, which is excellent when it comes to keeping the spine aligned. The hips are unlikely to sink, meaning that this Helix should feel comfortable for this group.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers might sink deeper into the first layer, but they’re unlikely to bottom out to the coil unit. Those weighing closer to 230 pounds could find the Helix too soft for stomach sleeping, but the rest would find sufficient support in this position.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy people who like sleeping on their stomachs might prefer a firmer mattress. The Helix feels slightly firm, but the comfort layer has a medium feel, meaning that it may not be enough to keep the hips aligned with the rest of the body.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Helix Midnight Pressure Map

The Helix Midnight mattress has two foam layers above the coil unit. The comfort layer is made from memory foam, which is one of the best materials for pressure relief. Memory foam allows a bit of sinkage to contour the sleeper’s curves in order to prevent the pressure from building up, which is especially beneficial for side and back sleepers or those struggling with pain.

Back Pain – People with back pain need a mattress that can keep the spine in alignment, which is something the Helix Midnight does well. The medium to slightly firm feel should allow the spine to remain straight by preventing the hips and shoulders from sinking in. That being said, if you’re a heavier sleeper, you should take into account your sleep position when considering this mattress. For example, heavier stomach sleepers could wind up exacerbating their back pain on this mattress.

Hip Pain – Hip pain can grow worse if your bed is too soft or too firm. The Helix Midnight should provide a good balance of pressure relief and support needed to alleviate hip pain, but this depends on your weight.

Shoulder Pain – People with shoulder pain should sleep on their back to take the pressure off this area. The Helix Midnight is a good mattress for back sleepers, especially those weighing 130 to 230 pounds. Plus, the memory foam should help ease discomfort.

Support

The Helix Midnight is a good option for those seeking optimal support as it’s a hybrid that has a slightly firm feel. Firmer mattresses are often better for support than those on the softer side. In addition, this is a hybrid mattress with sturdy coils that help keep the body aligned in different sleeping positions. The thicker-gauge coils on the side enhance edge support, which is especially beneficial for people who like to spread out.

Another quality that stands out is the base layer under the coil unit. This gives the bed additional base support and structure, ensuring the upper layers can perform properly.

Motion Transfer

Motion isolation is important for those who share their bed with a partner, child, or pet. Anyone moving in your bed can disturb your sleep, so having a mattress with good motion isolation can help prevent this.

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid, so it doesn’t have the same motion isolation you’d expect from an all-foam mattress. This hybrid is on the firmer side and has two foam layers above the individually-wrapped coils, so lightweight people may still get enough motion isolation. However, if your partner is heavier, you may feel this on the other side.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Cooling is crucial if you live in a warm climate, but it’s also important for those who naturally sleep hot regardless of the outside temperature. Hybrid mattresses are cooler than memory foam because of the coils that allow more airflow to keep the construction cool.

The Helix Midnight has a cover that promotes cooling, while the coils below will foster that extra airflow. Additionally, you can opt for the optional GlacioTex cooling cover for a slightly higher price.

Performance for Couples

The Helix Midnight is a viable mattress for couples as it has good edge support and bounce. In addition, the mattress can handle up to 1,000 pounds, which is good if you and your partner are heavy sleepers. The bounce, which comes from the coil unit, should be good for sexually-active couples.

On the other hand, some may not like Midnight’s lack of motion isolation. The two foam layers should isolate motion well enough if your partner is a lighter person who doesn’t move a lot while sleeping. If they’re heavy and restless, you may want an all-foam bed with better motion isolation.

Helix Midnight Mattress: Preference-based Features

Cooling

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress with coils that deliver additional airflow, which should keep the foam layers from overheating. This mattress also has a cooling cover and an optional GlacioTex cover for those who like sleeping on an extra-crisp surface.

Excellent Support

The Midnight has up to 950 individually wrapped coils that help keep your body aligned in different sleep postures. The coils move independently to follow your body’s curves as you move from one position to the other.

Exceptional Edge Support

Hybrids usually have good edge support if the coils go from one edge to the other. Additionally, the Midnight has thicker-gauge coils along the sides, which enhances the edge support, allowing you to sit and sleep near the edge without feeling like you’d roll off.

High Bounce

People who change positions or have mobility issues should like the bounce this Helix provides. Although it’s a slightly firm mattress, it gives a bit of pushback to assist with moving and getting in and out of the bed.

Construction: What’s Inside the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall and has four layers, including a Soft Touch cover and a bottom cover. The surface is breathable and soft to the touch, which adds to the overall comfort. In addition, you can opt for the GlacioTex cover if you’re a hot sleeper, as it’s a cooler option for those who sweat a lot.

The cover is stretchy, and the stitching is durable, so you shouldn’t notice any wear and tear for years. The following are the layers you can find under the cover.

  • The comfort layer is made from Memory Plus Foam, which is a unique Helix design. The material is a high-density memory foam blend made to contour the body and provide a comfortable cushion for pressure relief.
  • The transition layer is made from high-grade poly foam. This material offers pressure relief and ergonomic support while providing a transition layer between the memory foam and coil unit.
  • The 8-inch coil unit is located below the poly foam layer. The coils are made from steel and are individually wrapped to help minimize motion transfer across the mattress. This bed has enhanced edge support lengthwise, which means the thicker-gauge coils are only added to the left and right side of the bed.
  • The base layer is made from DuraDense Foam and sits at the bottom of the Helix Midnight mattress. This foam is made to provide a supportive base and durability.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Helix Midnight mattress comes rolled in a box, which makes it easy to move from your door to the bedroom. Once you have it near the bed frame, open the box and place the rolled mattress on the frame. Remove the plastic, and the bed will unroll. As it’s usually the case with bed-in-a-box mattresses, it takes a while for the bed to decompress and reach its full size. The Helix Midnight should reach its full size in about 45 minutes.

When it comes to off-gassing, you may notice a slight odor when you first remove the packaging. The smell should dissipate in a week, but you can speed up the process by airing the mattress in a well-ventilated room and without any bedding.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are  CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. This bed is also GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Shipping is free within the United States. Helix ships mattresses to Canada for an additional fee.
  • White-Glove Delivery – Helix offers an Old Mattress Removal service, but this is currently suspended due to Covid-19 safety concerns. However, this service is still available in California.
  • Trial – Helix offers a 100-night trial for customers to test how the Midnight mattress performs and fits their needs.
  • Warranty – This mattress comes with a 10-year warranty.
  • Return Policy – Returns are free within the 100-night trial. One thing to keep in mind is that only two mattresses can be returned per household or customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of mattress is the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress that features a combination of 8-inch coils, memory foam, and poly foam in its construction. The hybrid construction gives a balance of support and pressure relief, along with qualities like edge support, bounce, and cooling.

Where can I buy a Helix Midnight mattress?

You can buy a Helix Midnight mattress online, directly from Helix. They’ll box up the mattress and send it to your address so that you don’t have to handle transporting it to your home. Click on the button above this FAQ section to begin the process.

Where can I try out a Helix Midnight mattress?

There are two ways to try out a Helix Midnight mattress before you make it a permanent fixture in your bedroom: you can test it at home for a 100-night trial, or you can lie down on it inside one of Helix’s partner showrooms.

The 100-night trial begins after you’ve ordered your Helix Midnight. You then have 100 nights to snooze on the mattress and decide if it’s a good match for your sleep needs. If not, you can return the mattress to Helix for a full refund—they’ll even coordinate the mattress pickup for you.

You could also choose to visit one of the brand’s partner showrooms, where certain mattress models are displayed and free to test out. Not every Helix model is available at these showrooms, but the Midnight is often featured. However, because a quick lie-down (or even a quick nap) isn’t as thorough of an experiment as actually sleeping on a mattress for multiple nights, we recommend taking advantage of the 100-night trial.

Is the Helix Midnight hot?

The Helix Midnight doesn’t run hot and should be a good option for hot sleepers. The mattress has a breathable cover, and there’s an option to choose the GlacioTex cooling cover to further enhance the cool-to-the-touch feel. In addition, the upper layers are unlikely to overheat thanks to the coils that allow air to circulate.

Is the Helix Midnight too firm?

The Helix Midnight is rated 6-7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it feels medium to slightly firm, depending on your weight. This firmness level should fit many sleepers as it allows some sinkage to prevent pressure buildup without taking away from support.

Overall Summary

Helix is a luxury brand that makes a range of mattresses suitable for light, heavy, and average-weight sleepers. The brand offers a line of standard beds and their Luxe upgrades, but the Midnight is among the standout models as it’s versatile and should fit many people.

Side Sleepers

4/5

Side sleepers should like how the mattress contours the curves to prevent the pressure from building up in the shoulders and hips. The top layer has a medium feel that should relieve pressure while ensuring you don’t sink too deeply. However, lightweight side sleepers may need a softer bed.

Back Sleepers

5/5

This bed is a good option for back sleepers as it has a medium to slightly firm feel that should provide sufficient support in this position. The foam layers help dissipate your weight so no pressure can build up in the lower back, while the coils help keep the spine aligned.

Stomach Sleepers

4/5

Stomach sleepers need maximum support to keep the hips aligned with the rest of the body. Lighter stomach sleepers should like how the Midnight supports their body without creating any pressure in the hips or pain in the lower back. However, significantly heavy sleepers may want a firmer mattress.

Combination Sleepers

4/5

This bed is versatile and should adapt well in different positions, a significant advantage to combination sleepers. Another benefit of the Helix Midnight bed is that it’s more buoyant because of the coils further below, which should foster easter repositioning.

Couples

4/5

Although the mattress should feel good in various positions and has good edge support most couples appreciate, it has less motion isolation than other models. If your partner weighs under 150 pounds, you may not feel them moving around, but if they weigh closer to 200 pounds you might want a bed with better motion isolation.

Heavy Sleepers

4/5

Significantly heavier people need a mattress that can support the body and allow a healthy sleep posture. The Helix Midnight has a firmer feel, which should be good enough to support people weighing over 230, depending on their preferred sleeping position. Those who sleep on their back and side should like it, while those sleeping on their stomach may do better with a firmer mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Lightweight sleepers who like sleeping on their back and stomach should like how the Midnight feels. The mattress helps keep the spine aligned, so there’s less chance you could wake up with back pain. However, lightweight side sleepers may be too light to activate the memory foam comfort layer, which can result in pressure building up in the shoulders.

Average-Weight Sleepers

5/5

The Helix Midnight mattress is an excellent match for average-weight people. They weigh enough to activate the foam layers but won’t sink too deeply to throw the spine out of alignment. However, those weighing closer to 230 pounds might prefer a firmer bed if they sleep on their stomach.

Overall Value

4/5

Helix is a high-quality brand that sells excellent hybrid mattresses that should fit all types of sleepers. The Midnight has an affordable price but packs a lot of value, delivering durability, comfort, pressure relief, and support. The company adds even more value to this deal by offering a 10-year warranty, free shipping, and a 100-night trial.

Our Verdict

After testing the Helix Midnight mattress, we think it’s worth your attention as it’s a good option for many people. This bed has plenty of excellent features, such as a breathable cover, durable coils, two foam layers, and an optional cooling cover. The medium to slightly firm feel makes it a good match for many average-weight people but also some lightweight and heavy folks.

In addition, the Midnight has an affordable price, a long trial, and a 10-year warranty. The foams are certified as free of chemicals and toxins, so the mattress is a safe option for consumers.
