Saatva is a company known for their premium-quality and sustainably-sourced materials. They’ve made hybrid mattresses before, but this one – the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid – is their most recent release. It’s different from others in their line because it combines memory foam and coils for a bed that feels both pressure-relieving and supportive.

Whether or not it’s the right bed for you, though, will depend on factors including your sleeping position, body type, and what you’re looking for in a bed. We’ll go over the details in this in-depth Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid review, so you can determine if this is the bed for you.

Who We Recommend The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid For:

  • Back sleepers – This mattress is medium-firm and should be an excellent fit for back sleepers of most body types. It should help relieve back pain by keeping the spine in a neutral alignment through the night.

  • Combination sleepers – The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is responsive enough that combination sleepers should have no problem moving from one position to the other during the night. It’s also not so firm that you’ll feel uncomfortable on your side or back.

  • Couples – This bed is especially cooling, which is great news for people who share a bed. It also offers excellent edge support, which means the bed’s entire surface should be usable.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid For:

  • Most stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to prevent their hips from dipping and throwing their spine out of alignment. Even though this bed is medium-firm, it will be too soft for most stomach sleepers.

  • Those who want to feel hugged by their mattress – This bed has memory foam, but it won’t sink down and give you that deep hug that memory foam lovers may expect. If that’s what you’re looking for, check out a bed that has more of a traditional memory foam feel.

  • Shoppers on a budget – Saatva beds are not generally the most budget-friendly mattresses, and while this is a high-quality hybrid, it may be out of range for budget shoppers.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6.5/10 (Luxury Firm)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Mattress Firmness Level 6.5

We rate mattresses between 1 and 10 on our Sleep Advisor Firmness Scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. With this in mind, we gave the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid a 6.5 out of 10. This makes this bed medium-firm, which means it is a great fit for the majority of sleepers.

That said, those who are much heavier might not find this bed as supportive as light or average-weight sleepers. Fortunately, there is the Saatva HD, which was specifically designed for heavier-weight folks.

How Does It Feel?

Saatva beds are delivered full-size, so there is no waiting period common to beds that arrive compressed in a box. The first thing you’ll notice is its luxurious look and feel; the cotton cover feels soft, breathable, and durable.

When you lie down, you’ll sink into the memory foam top layers, but not so much that you’ll feel like you can’t easily move around. This is thanks to the foam’s responsiveness as well as the coils beneath.

What We Like About the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

  • It’s cooling – A lot of mattresses that include memory foam, which can retain heat, but this Saatva hybrid includes cooling gel, AirCradle® memory foam, and innerspring coils. These three should leave you feeling cool through the night.

  • Free in-home delivery and setup – Saatva offers free in-home delivery and setup with this bed, which means you won’t have to worry about any heavy lifting.

  • It’s responsive – Even though its top two layers are memory foam, this bed still feels responsive, so you shouldn’t have trouble changing positions.

Our Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Complaints

  • Too soft for stomach sleeping – This bed is best for side and back sleepers. Stomach sleepers (who aren’t very lightweight) will likely need something firmer to protect their lower backs.

  • It doesn’t feel like memory foam – It might be misleading because this bed has two layers of memory foam, but it doesn’t feel like a traditional memory foam bed. The coils make it rather bouncy.

  • There is a return fee – If you decide to return this mattress during your trial period, you’ll have to pay a 99-dollar fee for pickup, whereas some mattress companies do this for free.

Testing Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress: How it Performed

We test mattresses for specific qualities like motion transfer, temperature regulation, bounce, edge support, overall support, and pressure relief. During testing, we also make sure to lie on the mattress in different positions to gain a better understanding of which types of sleepers would be most comfortable on the product.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Saatva, the Memory Foam Hybrid is best suited for sleepers up to 300 pounds. They recommend the Saatva HD or the Zenhaven latex bed for those who weigh significantly more.

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★★☆★★★★☆☆
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★☆★★★☆☆☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★☆★★☆☆☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – This bed should feel good for most lightweight side sleepers, though those who are significantly under 130 pounds might not press down into the bed enough to receive its contouring benefits.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should push down into this bed just enough to feel its cushioning benefits, without sinking so far down that they bottom out on the support layer. However, people with more sensitive joints might want a softer bed.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers closer to 230 pounds will probably feel a comfortable amount of pressure relief on this bed, though those who weigh closer to 300 pounds will likely do better with something more supportive for heavy people.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should feel plenty supported on this bed, with their hips and shoulders kept level by the lumbar zone quilting in the cover.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – This bed might be the most ideal for average-weight back sleepers, who will push down into the top memory foam layers. The materials will fill in around the curves of the body while keeping the spine in a comfortable, neutral alignment.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – This should be a great fit for some heavyweight sleepers, though those who need extra support may find it too soft. For sleepers over 300 pounds, the Saatva HD is likely the better choice.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – For those significantly under 130 pounds or who prefer a soft bed, this hybrid should feel firm enough for stomach sleeping.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers will likely need a firmer mattress in order to keep their hips from dipping down into the bed’s top layers.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers will not get the support they need to sleep on their stomachs on this less-than-firm bed. This will cause the hips to dip down, which will ultimately lead to back pain.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Memory foam is a great material for relieving pressure, and this Saatva bed is no exception. This is especially true for back sleeping as your weight should be evenly distributed and well-supported with the zoned support in the bed’s cover. This means less of your weight will be concentrated in specific areas like the shoulders and hips, which should help alleviate discomfort.

This bed should work well for curtailing pain in most areas, but this will also depend on your body weight and sleep style.

Back Pain – When sleeping on your back or side, this bed is excellent at alleviating back pain by keeping the spine in a neutral alignment. However, it might exacerbate lower back pain when stomach sleeping if your hips dip down into the softer top layers.
Hip Pain – This bed should do wonders for back sleepers with hip pain. For those who sleep on their side and have hip pain, this bed could be too firm. For those who sleep on their stomachs, it will be a bit too soft.
Shoulder Pain – Back sleepers and most side sleepers with shoulder pain will do well with this mattress and its zoned support, but if you’re a stomach sleeper, going with a firmer mattress will be better.

Support

When we talk about a mattress’ support, we’re referring to its ability to keep your spine in proper alignment. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid combines multiple materials to create a bed that feels very supportive. One of its best assets, though, is that it has zoned support with the Lumbar Zone® Quilting, which is an enhanced support system that provides firmer support underneath the heaviest areas.

Additionally, this durable bed should not sag beneath your weight, making it supportive enough for couples as well. With that said, it won’t be the most supportive option for those who weigh over 300 pounds.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is an important factor for most couples, as it describes how much you can feel when your partner is moving on the other side of the bed. Memory foam tends to be a very motion-isolating material, and it does the job in this bed.

As this bed has coils, you may still feel if your partner gets up and out of bed in the middle of the night, However, we think you shouldn’t notice if they’re just adjusting positions.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Hot sleepers know the importance of a mattress that stays cool at night. Luckily, Saatva has designed this bed with cooling in mind, since traditional memory foam tends to trap heat.

Saatva’s top memory foam layer is infused with a cooling gel that should whisk away heat, and beneath this is the AirCradle® memory foam, which is specially made to foster airflow. The bed’s layer of coils also keeps the entire mattress cooler as air can more easily pass through. All of this is wrapped in a breathable, organic cotton cover.

Performance for Couples

This is an excellent mattress for couples. First, it has good motion isolation – especially considering it contains coils, which are inherently bouncy.

Second, even though it isolates motion well, it does still have a good amount of bounce from the coils. This combination of motion isolation and bounce makes it a great bed for couples who want to get some sleep and who are also sexually active.

Third, this bed has good edge support, which means the edges of this bed are reinforced so two people should be able to comfortably use the entire surface of the bed.

Preference-based Features

Exceptional Edge Support

This bed includes high-density foam rails around the entire perimeter, which means no sagging edges. This sort of edge support makes the entire surface of the bed usable.

Eco-Conscious Materials

Saatva uses organic, natural cotton for the cover and upcycled steel for the coils. They also use CertiPUR-US® certified foams.

Adjustable Base Compatible

This bed is compatible with an adjustable base.

Construction: What’s Inside the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

Saatva beds come with free white glove delivery, so they will deliver the mattress to your door, set it up for you, and your old mattress will be removed, free of charge.

Additionally, Saatva mattresses are handcrafted and made to order. They’ll be delivered, full-sized, rather than compressed in a box. This means you won’t have to wait for the bed to decompress; it will immediately measure 11.5 inches tall and be ready to sleep on.

The first thing you’ll notice is the breathable soft cover that’s made from natural cotton. This cover is zoned for support, meaning it will be slightly denser beneath your hips.

  • Beneath the cover is the top foam layer. It is made up of half an inch of gel-infused memory foam. This material is made to contour your body and remain cool.
  • The next layer is the comfort layer. This unit consists of 2 inches of AirCradle® memory foam. This particular memory foam should promote pressure relief and continue to keep you cool since beneath it are pockets of air for breathability.
  • The final layer is the support unit. This is the thickest part of the bed, made up of 8-inch high pocketed coils. These upcycled steel coils are individually wrapped to help isolate motion better, allowing the coils to move more independently of one another.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Most of the mattresses you can buy online these days will arrive at your door, compressed in a box. However, this isn’t the case with Saatva, as their team will deliver this bed to you, already fully expanded and ready to sleep on. This means there’s no unboxing, unwrapping, or off-gassing period.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
  • Certified Natural Materials – The cotton in the cover is GOTS-certified, which means the cotton meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to flip my Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

No, you do not need to flip the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. This mattress is designed with softer layers on top and a firm, innerspring support layer on the bottom, so you should not flip it. You can rotate it every six months, though, to increase the bed’s lifespan.

What is a hybrid memory foam mattress?

Hybrid memory foam beds combine the features of traditional memory foam beds with innerspring beds, so they’ll have top layers of memory foam, and lower support layers that contain coils. This allows them to have great support and some bounce, along with contouring and pressure relief. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is one example.

Do I need a box spring with my Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

You can use a foundation, box spring, bed frame, platform bed, or adjustable base with the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. Saatva recommends buying the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus if you purchase the Split King model of this bed.

Do Saatva mattresses have formaldehyde?

No, Saatva mattresses are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they don’t contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde or ozone depleters.

Overall Summary

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid offers a luxurious combination of memory foam and innerspring coils for a pressure-relieving and supportive night’s sleep.

Side Sleeping Icon

Side Sleepers

4/5

Most side sleepers should find a lot of pressure relief on the shoulder and hip from this mattress–especially average to heavyweight sleepers, who will sink into the top memory foam layers nicely. Those who are very petite or very heavy might prefer something softer or firmer, respectively.

Back Sleeping Icon

Back Sleepers

4/5

This medium-firm bed is a great match for most back sleepers. The coils should have most sleepers feel well supported, while the memory foam will contour and fill in the areas around the spine, for proper alignment. It should even help alleviate back pain in this position.

Stomach Sleeping Icon

Stomach Sleepers

3/5

Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer mattress than this one in order to prevent the hips from dipping down and putting the spine out of alignment. Average-weight and heavyweight sleepers will find this bed too soft for stomach sleeping, but some very petite sleepers might find it firm enough.

Combination Sleeping Icon

Combination Sleepers

4/5

This bed may have memory foam layers on top, but the foam is more responsive than most memory foam that you sink into. This makes it great for those who change positions throughout the night since you shouldn’t feel stuck in this bed. It’s also a good fit for both back and side sleeping.

Couples Icon

Couples

5/5

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is an excellent match for couples since it offers a rare combination of both bounce and motion isolation. The motion isolation means you shouldn’t feel your partner change positions during the night, and the bounce is often preferable for sexually-active couples. Plus, the edge support lets both partners spread out when they sleep.

Heavy Sleepers Icon

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

Significantly heavier folks closer to 300 pounds might find this mattress to be too soft for side sleeping and certainly for stomach sleeping. Back sleepers who prefer a soft-feeling mattress could do well here, but in general, this bed isn’t recommended for those weighing over 300 pounds.

Light Weight Sleepers

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Lightweight sleepers should feel comfortable and supported on this bed while sleeping on their backs and possibly stomachs (for those who are very petite.) Some lightweight side sleepers may not be heavy enough to push down into the top comfort layers of this bed, so it would feel too firm.

Light Weight Sleepers

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

Average-weight sleepers should feel a pleasant amount of pressure relief and a good amount of support on this bed, in all positions except for stomach sleeping. This is because average-weight individuals will push down into the bed just enough to receive the benefits of both the memory foam and the innerspring support layer.

Overall Value

5/5

Saatva may be a more expensive brand, but when you consider its durability, lifetime warranty, year-long sleep trial, and free white glove delivery, it is an excellent value for the price. For this reason, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid earned a 5 out of 5 for overall value.

Our Verdict

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is just the latest in a line of excellent, high-quality products from Saatva. This bed provides a combination of support with its layer of upcycled steel coils and pressure relief with the two layers of contouring memory foam.

The memory foam in this bed is both cooling and responsive, so you shouldn’t overheat or sink into it so much that you feel stuck, making it an excellent match for combination and hot sleepers. We also think it could work well for many side and back sleepers.

However, this bed won’t provide the ample support that most stomach sleepers need to keep their hips level.
