12 Top-Rated California King Size Mattress Reviews

Nectar – Great Overall Value

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • OEKO-TEX® Certified
  • 365-Day Trial
  • Forever Warranty

Nectar has really made its name known in the industry and for good reason. Their Nectar Mattress is made from memory foam that should give you that classic contouring feeling. Its cooling cover and gel-infused foam layers should keep things breathable, and the Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam should allow a little more bounce than the average all-foam to make repositioning at night simple.

Nectar works on any foundation, including adjustable and platform bases, so buying your new Cal king bed frame should be a little easier when choosing this mattress.

What makes it stand out? Nectar has some high-quality features, and the average sleeper should find its medium firmness comfortable and pressure relieving. With a 365-day trial, lifetime warranty, and fair pricing, you should feel like you got a great deal when buying a Nectar.

Layla – True Memory Foam Feel

Highlights:

  • Dual-sided Firmness
  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 120-Day Trial
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Made in the USA

Memory foam lovers, this may be the mattress for you. On Layla, you should feel like you are sinking into the bed while the foam surface contours to your body. If you are shopping for both you and a partner, you should appreciate the minimal motion transfer and bounce.

Why is it special? The company recently revamped this model that comes with a flippable, dual-sided design, softer on one side and firmer on the other. Memory foam beds usually excel in pressure relief, and Layla does this and more.

With the dual-sided firmness, you get to personalize your sleeping experience depending on your preferences. If you are a side sleeper, you may prefer the softer side to relieve those hips and shoulders, and stomach and back sleepers could benefit from the firmer side for better spine alignment.

Alexander Signature Hybrid – Hybrid

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 100-Night Trial
  • Lifetime Comfort Guarantee
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Made in the USA

Hybrids are some of the most wanted beds in the industry because of their combination of coils and foam, giving both resistant support and soft levels of contouring for pressure relief. Alexander Signature Hybrid is a favorite because of the focus on cooling and high-quality materials.

Made by Nest Bedding, Alexander has copper-infused layers and a cover that uses Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric for breathability in that foam top. That along with the innerspring system and you should not experience any overheating issues.

Why did it make the list? Alexander comes in three different firmnesses: plush, medium, and luxury firm. You can have the contouring pressure relief of softer foam with the plush and medium options; for those that appreciate a stiffer surface, the luxury firm model is up for grabs, which is an exciting feature because not all brands offer a firmer model for sleepers.

Casper – Versatile

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 100-Night Trial
  • 10-Year Warranty
  • Designed and Assembled in the USA

Partnering with Target, Casper has become one of the most popular bed-in-a-box brands out there. The company started with their original all-foam mattress, and they have expanded and updated just this year, now offering a hybrid foam and spring option for two of their three models. Casper works with all standard foundations.

Their classic Casper is their most versatile option, at a medium firmness level, but they also have a less expensive Essential model that is all-foam and a more luxurious choice called the Wave, which has added comfort and targeted support.

What’s its best feature? Casper is made with a Zoned Support™ foam layer for softness around the shoulders and a firmer section under the core, which should offer great spine alignment. This compounded with the choice of hybrid or all-foam materials should provide a comfortable sleeping solution for most sleepers.

DreamCloud – Affordable Luxury

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 365-Day Trial
  • Everlong Warranty

Looking for luxury but do not want to spend thousands on a mattress? DreamCloud cuts out the middleman to be able to sell their higher quality mattresses at an affordable cost, while still offering a 365-day trial and Everlong Warranty. It is a hybrid bed scored at a medium firmness, a pretty adaptable choice for most.

It is an impressive 15-inches tall so you will have to consider that when choosing a new frame to fit this bed. It may be somewhat tall for certain headboards or footboards.

What makes it unique? DreamCloud is covered in a lush EuroTop cover and is made to be a foam and spring hybrid. It is made from high-quality materials that should assure durability but at a cost that is much less than what you would see in your traditional showroom.

Zenhaven – Latex

Highlights:

  • Dual-Sided
  • Certified Organic Cotton
  • OEKO-TEX® Certified
  • 120-Day Trial
  • 20-Year Warranty
  • Made in the USA

Zenhaven is an all-natural material made from the sap of rubber trees using an American Talalay construction. Latex is often more expensive than your traditional bed but has a lot of great features that you can not get from other materials. It is extremely durable and hypoallergenic.

What are its best features? Rather than sleeping in the mattress, you should feel like you are more on top of it, as latex is pretty bouncy and responsive in nature. It also has a five-zone comfort layer that gives versatile support and relief where you need it.

It has dual-sided firmness levels; one side is Luxury Plush and the other is Gentle Firm. The Gentle Firm side is 18 percent firmer than the other. If you are wanting a different feel, it is as easy as flipping over the mattress and trying out the other side.

Saatva – Innerspring

Highlights:

  • Certified Organic Cotton
  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 120-Day Trial
  • 15-Year Warranty
  • Charity Initiatives
  • Made in the USA

Saatva offers a luxurious, pillow top innerspring bed that is also environmentally friendly. Although you can order Saatva online, it does not arrive in a box like most online-only mattress brands. With free white-glove delivery, you do not have to worry about removing your old bed or installing the new one.

Why is it special? With Saatva, you can choose the firmness and height of your bed. There are three firmness options (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two heights (14.5-inch Premier Luxury or 11.5-inch Custom Slim).

It has a coil-on-coil system, which should make this bed breathable and bouncy. Along with the innerspring base, there is a memory foam section in the lumbar area to give some relief to the hips and core. If you want the feel of a more traditional bed, this should be a comfortable choice.

Brooklyn Aurora – Cooling

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 120-Day Trial
  • 10-Year Warranty
  • Made in the USA

If you have been known to wake up in a sweat, cooling is going to be essential in your search for a new mattress. For Brooklyn Bedding, heat regulation is a top priority. Aurora is a high-end hybrid bed that is 13 inches of quality foam and coils.

What stands out? Each of the layers takes cooling into account using a combination of different technologies; TitanCool™ is the brand’s copper-infused gel foam that resists heat. They also use a latex-alternative that should provide temperature regulation and give some bounce, and the pocketed coils should allow for plenty of airflow.

Aurora comes in three firmness options. If you decide that a different choice would be better, you can exchange the bed for an alternate comfort level up to 30 days after receiving it. So whatever your preferences are (soft, medium, or firm), you should be both comfortable and remain cool.

Nolah – Socially Conscious

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 120-Day Trial
  • 15-Year Warranty
  • Wildlife Initiative
  • Made in the USA

What if you could help the wildlife while making a purchase that will make your nights a whole lot comfier? Nolah is a bed-in-a-box made with three layers of breathable foam. Their AirFoam™ is made with little air pockets that help regulate heat, and the high-density foam should create a durable product that lasts for years.

Nolah is medium firmness and softer on the surface, which should be great for side sleepers. Those who are heavier may want to look for an alternative to allow for better support and alignment.

What’s its best feature? Nolah’s wildlife initiative is impressive, especially for the environmentally conscious. For every mattress purchased, Nolah “adopts” an endangered animal; once purchased, you can choose which wildlife you want to donate to, including bald eagles, sea otters, and polar bears.

Nolah is shipped in an eco-friendly box and, if returned, is recycled or donated.

Helix – Customizable

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 100-Day Trial
  • 10-Year Warranty
  • Made in the USA

If you want some more control over our sleeping surface but do not know where to begin, Helix might be the answer. There are thousands of beds out there, and it can seem daunting to make a choice.

Why is it unique? Helix has an online sleep quiz on their website, where you can enter in your personal information and they will generate a few of the best options for you. They take into account your age, height, weight, and sleeping position, and if you sleep with a partner, they consider their information as well.

Helix offers mattresses with dual firmness, so if you and your partner prefer different comfort levels, half of the bed can be softer or firmer than the other. All of their mattresses are hybrids, so if you want an all-foam or traditional innerspring, you may need to look elsewhere.

In our Helix analysis you can find more info – check it out here.

WinkBeds Plus – Heavy Folks

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 120-Day Trial
  • “Any Reason” Guarantee
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Made in the USA

Heavier individuals, this mattress is constructed for you. WinkBeds Plus is a hybrid made from highly durable foam, latex, and a triple-zoned pocketed-coil system. Just because it is durable does not mean its uncomfortable; the soft gel-infused foam hugs your body in all the right places, and the coils make sure the hips, back, and shoulders are well-supported.

On top of all of that, the company offers a lifetime warranty and durability promise so you can feel comfortable spending your hard-earned cash.

What is special? This is the first luxury mattress made specifically for those over 300 pounds. Its “impression-proof” foams are designed for resistance and to reduce sagging, and the coils are specially reinforced every four pockets, so it should last for many years to come; in fact, the company boasts that it is “possibly the most durable mattress on the market.”

iPedic Sojourn 12” Gel Memory Foam – Budget Option

Highlights:

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • OEKO-TEX® Certified
  • 120-Night Trial
  • 10-Year Warranty
  • Made in the USA

A Cali king is more expensive due to just size alone, so choosing a brand that is budget-friendly might make this purchase a little easier on the wallet. The iPedic Soujourn made by Dreamfoam is an affordable option that does not skimp out on features.

The Sojourn is an all-foam bed made from three layers. The top is a gel memory foam, the middle is a transition comfort and support layer, and the base is a high-density foam that provides even more support and durability.

What stands out? For being inexpensive, iPedic has some great features: The foam is gel-infused to help regulate heat, which memory foam tends to struggle with. The lower levels offer solid support for most sleeping positions, while the top contours to the body for good pressure relief.

See our Sojourn overview for everything you might want to know.

Buyer’s Guide

What is a Cali King Size?

A California (Western)  king is a size of mattress that is designed with people over 6 feet tall in mind. A standard sized mattress is 72” wide and 84” long, which is 4 inches longer than your traditional queen or king-sized bed.

California King vs. King

Many believe that a California king is larger than a king sized mattress, but that is not actually the case. A California king is slightly longer and more narrow than a standard king. For total surface area, the king size wins; Californias stand at 6,048 square inches, while a standard king is 6,080.

Kings tend to be best for couples because they offer more room side to side, while a Western king would be a good choice for taller folks.

Read more: King vs. California King Bed Size

Cal King vs. Split Size

Split kings are two mattresses the size of a twin XL pushed together to make a whole bed the size of a standard king. Less commonly, there are split California kings, this would be two narrower mattresses pushed together. This is great for couples who need different firmness levels or want bases that can be adjusted separately.

This option is easier to move because they are in two separate pieces rather than one larger one.

The History

California kings began as a status item; in the 1960s, the bigger the mattress, the fancier and richer you were. Celebrities in Hollywood wanted a bed to fit their large mansions. These beds originally started around king size, but soon mattress companies made these beds longer and narrower, hence the California (or Western) king.

Pros of This Type

If you or your partner are over 6 feet tall and do not like your feet dangling off the bed, this size should make bedtime a lot more comfortable. If you are a single sleeper, this size might make more sense, as well, because you will not need as much space from side to side but can use some more room from top to bottom (if you are tall, of course).

They also fit in your traditionally sized bedroom better because they are less square and more rectangular. Many bedrooms have two long sides and two shorter sides so other furniture, like nightstands, may fit a little bit better with a narrower king size bed.

a family with a cute little dog is sleeping all together on the bed

Potential Disadvantages of This Type

This size may not be for everyone, though. Couples who want more space between themselves and their partner may find a king bed to be a better option, especially if they are both of average height.

It is also more difficult to find accessories, as well. Bed frames are harder to purchase because many models do not come in this size, and you will not be able to find sheets at every store that will fit. These accessories may be more expensive due to this.

Luckily, online bed shopping is easier and easier these days, so it should not be too much of an issue, but if these things concern you, a standard king may be best.

Average Pricing

If you are looking to save a dollar, this size may not be the right choice. These can sometimes be the most expensive models, even a little more than your standard king because they are considered a luxurious option found in nicer hotels. Many manufacturers sell kings and California kings for the same price, but it depends on the brand.

As touched on in the previous section, sheets, toppers, and frames may also be more pricy than other sizes, so take this into consideration when making your decision.

Additional Considerations

Material Type

These mattresses come in all different materials; it really all depends on personal sleeping preferences. The most common choices are:

  • memory foam,
  • innerspring,
  • latex,
  • or hybrids (a combination of materials).
  • Each offers different features, which we touched on at the beginning; however, if you are interested in learning more, we have articles that go more in depth.

Sleeping Position

What position you sleep in will make a huge impact on which bed you should choose, specifically when it comes to firmness levels. Typically, side sleepers may find better pressure relief on a softer bed, while back sleeping folks and exclusive stomach sleepers should like a firmer surface for spine alignment. The average sleeper should be comfortable on a medium mattress.

Trial Period

This is especially important to those who buy a mattress online without testing it out in store. You are going to spend a lot of your life sleeping on this bed, so be sure to choose one that comes with a solid trial period. The best can be up to 365 days, while many companies offer a 120-day trial.

a girl is reading a book on the bed

Warranty

Since you will most likely be spending a grip of money on this new bed, make sure that you choose one with a great warranty. Your average bed should come with a 10-year warranty, while the more extensive ones can be covered for life, like Nectar, Layla, and DreamCloud.

Conclusion

Buying a perfect new bed is often stressful because of all the brands and features out there, especially since the emergence of the online mattress industry. Hopefully, you feel more confident knowing whether a Cal king is for you and in making a decision on what brand is right for your specific situation.
