Fiberglass is a commonly-used flame retardant in mattresses. It’s made from fiber-reinforced plastic composed of glass fiber. Although manufacturers use it for an important purpose, shoppers have become increasingly aware of its potential dangers.
When exposed to fiberglass, sleepers can develop irritation of the eyes, lungs, and skin. Some may experience itching, while long-term exposure may cause lung diseases like pulmonary fibrosis. Since many brands may use fiberglass because it’s cheap to produce, finding a bed without it can be tricky. To help you, we made a list of the best mattresses without fiberglass.

The Saatva Classic mattress is our editor’s pick because it has a dual-coil design, reinforced edges, a year-long trial, and a range of options for firmness and height. This bed is either 11.5 or 14.5 inches tall and made with two coil layers combined with multiple foams. Comfort starts with its organic cotton cover and pillow top, giving sleepers enough cushioning without taking away from the support.
This Saatva has Guardin™ botanical antimicrobial treatment and CertiPUR-US® certified foams. On top of that, the coils in this innerspring bed are made from recycled steel, making it an attractive option for eco-conscious shoppers.
Why we picked it
- The flame retardant barrier in the Saatva Classic mattress is made from natural thistle pulp, meaning it has no fiberglass or chemical sprays.
- Saatva offers an industry-leading lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial, giving you enough time to test the bed.

This hybrid mattress is 11.5 inches tall, featuring five layers of foam and coils. The bed has a firm feel that we rate at 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. As such, it’s an excellent option for back and stomach sleepers, including heavier individuals.
Stomach sleepers, in particular, should appreciate firm support coming from the coils. This bed doesn’t offer too much sinkage or contouring but maintains its firm shape to keep the hips aligned with the rest of the body. On the other hand, it may be too firm for lightweight people and side sleepers.
Why we love it
- Apart from having firm support for back and stomach sleepers, this bed is also good for heavy people weighing above 230 pounds.
- The foams in the Helix Dawn mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning that they’re free from chemicals like lead, mercury, PBDE flame retardants, and other harmful substances.

The Nolah Evolution mattress is a high-quality hybrid with a 15-inch profile and three firmness levels. The first thing you’ll notice is the cool-to-the-touch ArcticTex™ cooling cover. The Euro top underneath has high conductivity, drawing the heat away from your body. Next, the Evolution has copper infusions in the AirFoamICE™ layer as well as a border gusset for quick air and heat dissipation.
What stands out about it?
- The Evolution has coils and CertiPUR-US® certified memory foam made without TDCPP or TCEP flame retardants.

Combination sleepers usually look for a versatile bed that fits all sleeping positions. The WinkBed mattress is one such bed that’s available in three firmness options, with a Luxury Firm version that should fit combination sleepers well. This hybrid mattress is 13.5 inches tall, featuring a layer of CertiPUR-US® certified foam and coils with a Tencel™ cover and a Euro top.
Combination sleepers should appreciate the bounce coming from the coils. These allow for easier repositioning, so you’re unlikely to feel trapped in this bed. Although it has sufficient bounce, the Luxury Firm model is also good at isolating motion as it has a 2-inch layer of gel-infused foam above the individually wrapped coils.
Why we like it
- The WinkBed does a good job of combining pressure relief with support, especially in the Luxury Firm mattress. The Soft version has an additional 2 inches of foam for added pressure relief, while the Firm version has a firmer Euro top to prevent sinkage.

This Emma is a hybrid mattress designed for heavy people weighing over 250 pounds. The bed has five foam layers and a single layer of pocketed springs, allowing a balanced feel of pressure relief and support in various sleeping positions. The upper layers allow contouring to cradle your curves. The comfort layer is highly responsive, so repositioning should be a breeze.
On top of that, the transition layer made from visco-elastic CliMax® adaptive foam has five ergonomic zones. This means the mattress feels differently in the hip area than it does in the shoulders. As such, it adapts to your curves easily to provide optimal comfort across the entire surface.
Why we picked it
- The Emma CliMax mattress is advertised as fiberglass-free. Plus, it features foams that are CertiPUR-US® certified as free of heavy metals, chemicals, and toxins.

The Birch Natural mattress is a good option for eco-conscious shoppers looking for a natural mattress. This bed combines Talalay latex, organic cotton, and New Zealand wool in a hybrid construction that delivers bounce, pressure relief, and support. Latex and the coils make this bed bouncy enough for easy repositioning and getting in and out of bed. However, you should also notice a nice cradle around the pressure points, although the bed has a medium-firm feel.
The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified, but there’s more. The Birch Natural also comes with GOTS, GREENGUARD GOLD, and eco-INSTITUT certifications. This bed has no fiberglass. Instead, the company uses wool as a flame retardant because it turns to carbon when exposed to flame.
Why should you consider it?
- Apart from having a natural flame retardant, this bed is also hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, thanks to latex and cotton in its construction.

The Awara Natural mattress is one of the best options if you’re after an organic mattress with multiple certifications. We rate this bed a 6 out of 10, so it should fit most average-weight people as well as lightweight stomach sleepers. The combination of coils and latex makes this bed bouncy for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and people with mobility issues.
Another thing worth noting is the cooling effect coming from organic wool, cotton, latex, and coils. Wool and cotton draw the heat away from your body, while the latex and coils further keep things cool since latex doesn’t retain heat and the coils foster airflow.
What stands out about it?
- The Awara Natural mattress has GREENGUARD GOLD and OEKO-TEX® certifications. In addition, it’s certified by Rainforest Alliance, Repreve, Wools of New Zealand, and Forest Stewardship Council.
- The bed also has a GOLS certification for latex and a GOTS certification for the cotton used in this bed.

People with back pain need a firmer sleeping surface that provides proper spine alignment without creating any pressure on sensitive points. The Avocado Green mattress has 8-inch coils that help keep the body aligned, offering ample lumbar support to alleviate back pain. In addition, the coils go from edge to edge, meaning you can spread across the bed and experience the same support.
Avocado uses latex that allows a bit of contouring, but you’re unlikely to feel that deep hug you’d get from memory foam. In addition, we rate its firmness as 6.5 out of 10, which means it should feel just right for most people, delivering both support and pressure relief.
Why did we pick it?
- This bed doesn’t have any glue. Instead, it’s needle-tufted by hand, which makes it an even better option for eco-conscious shoppers looking for a more sustainable bed.
- The Avocado Green mattress has organic wool instead of fiberglass.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a quality mattress with a medium firmness, but most people should experience it as relatively soft. As such, the bed should feel good for side sleeping because it cradles the curves and prevents pressure from building up. The mattress has multiple certifications and is made without PBDEs, TDCPP, or TDCPP flame retardants.
Another thing that stands out is the cooling effect coming from the layers of Cooling Cloud™ foam and Climate Comfort™ foam. In addition, this is a hybrid with coils that allow the air to circulate so that it doesn’t stay trapped inside the construction.
Why we like it
- Side sleepers should appreciate the softer layers allowing enough sinkage to relieve pressure in the hips, shoulders, and knees.
- The Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress has edge-to-edge coils and additional foam around the perimeter to prevent the edges from collapsing if you sit or sleep in this area.
To Learn More: read our in-depth Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress review or discover our picks for the best mattresses for side sleepers.
What to Know When Buying a Mattress Without Fiberglass
Fiberglass is cheap to use as a flame retardant, and it easily meets safety standards. It does a good job of preventing your mattress from burning fast if it catches on fire. However, you’re exposed to fiberglass the moment your bed is damaged. This is why people are wary because exposing yourself to fiberglass can result in eye and skin irritation and even damage to the lungs and respiratory tract.
What is Fiberglass?
Fiberglass is a composite made from reinforced plastic and glass. Apart from mattresses, you can find fiberglass in cars, appliances, roofing material, insulation, and bathtubs, as it’s durable, cheap, and malleable. These fibers can be used in various ways depending on the product.
How to Check If a Mattress Has Fiberglass
- Don’t go with the cheapest option – More often than not, the cheapest mattresses have fiberglass because it’s efficient and inexpensive to use in mattress manufacturing. The price makes it attractive to brands making cheap beds, so try to steer clear of those if you want to avoid fiberglass.
- Ask the company directly – If you’re unsure if a bed has fiberglass or not, it’s best to ask the company. Most brands have live chats on their website, or you can send an email or call them to ask if they use fiberglass as a flame retardant.
- Check the label – Most brands that don’t use fiberglass will like to say that out loud. For this reason, there’s likely a label somewhere on the mattress indicating the product is free of fiberglass. In addition, beds now have a label with a list of all the materials used.
- Research where it was made – Brands that are transparent about where and how their beds are made are always the best choice. This insight allows you to learn about the materials, their sustainability, and their role in your mattress.
- Look for beds with more organic materials – Beds with organic materials like wool and cotton usually don’t have fiberglass because the two organic materials act as a fire barrier instead.
Why Do Some Mattresses Contain Fiberglass?
Some mattresses contain fiberglass as a fire retardant to help ensure the bed doesn’t burst into flames if caught on fire. One thing to keep in mind is that fiberglass is deep inside the mattress and is not dangerous until the bed is damaged and you’re exposed to it.
Why Should I Get a Mattress Without Fiberglass?
Fiberglass is found inside a mattress, and sometimes, we can be exposed to the inside of the bed without thinking too much about what’s inside. For example, if your bed has a removable cover, some fiberglass may be on the inside of the layers. In other cases, the cover could become torn, which could expose the sleeper to fiberglass.
In a 2022 study1, the covers of four mattresses were inspected using tools that allowed the team to examine them on a microscopic level. What they found was that two of the mattresses had over 50 percent fiberglass in the inner sock layers, and 1 percent had made its way onto nearby fabric layers, which means if the cover’s zipper was even just slightly opened, the sleeper could be exposed.
Additional Factors to Consider When Buying a Mattress
Type of Mattress
- Memory Foam – Memory foam beds are excellent for pressure relief, and they usually have good motion isolation for couples and co-sleepers. However, they tend to sleep hot, which is why some brands use cooling covers or gel infusions.
- Latex – Latex can be either Talalay or Dunlop and is often combined with coils or other foams. Latex beds are durable, bouncy, and cooling because the material doesn’t retain heat like memory foam.
- Hybrid – Hybrid mattresses combine foam and coils. In some cases, it can be memory foam, poly foam, or even latex. These beds are a perfect combination of pressure relief and support, providing bounce with solid motion isolation.
- Innerspring – Innerspring beds also have coils, but they typically have fewer comfort layers than hybrid mattresses. These are typically supportive enough for average-weight people and very bouncy because not as much foam in the comfort layers and the coils may be interconnected rather than individually wrapped (as they are in hybrids).
Your Preferred Sleeping Position
- Side Sleepers – Side sleepers usually want a softer mattress that can adapt to their curves and relieve pressure in the hips, shoulders, and knees. Most side sleepers steer toward memory foam beds, but many can also enjoy a hybrid if it’s on the softer side or has a plush pillow top.
- Back Sleepers – Back sleepers do best with a medium firmness as they require a bit of contouring around the lower back and plenty of support to keep the spine aligned. Most back sleepers do well with memory foam and hybrid beds, but some may also like a latex mattress.
- Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers should look for firmer mattresses that don’t allow the hips to sink into the comfort layers. Hybrid and innerspring beds are typically the best for people who sleep on their stomachs.
- Combination Sleepers – Combination sleepers need a responsive mattress that makes it easy to reposition, which is why they steer toward latex and innerspring models. Their preferred firmness should depend on what position they spend the most time in.
Body Type
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers weigh under 130 pounds, and they usually experience mattresses as firmer. For this reason, most lightweight people look for softer beds with plush comfort layers, Euro tops, or pillow tops. They can do with any mattress type as long as there’s enough cushioning on the mattress surface.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight people weigh 130 to 230 pounds, but they can experience a mattress differently depending on their exact body weight. Most of these people enjoy medium firmness, although some may prefer softer or firmer beds depending on their preferred sleeping position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers weigh above 230 pounds. They usually do best with the firmest mattresses, especially if they like sleeping on their side or stomach. Most people within this group should like hybrid and innerspring beds with good edge support.
Mattresses Without Fiberglass FAQs
Do all mattresses have fiberglass?
No, not all mattresses have fiberglass. Although the material is efficient and affordable, it’s also potentially unhealthy, so organic and eco-friendly brands typically avoid using it. For this reason, we now have beds with wool as a fiberglass alternative.
Do memory foam mattresses have fiberglass?
Although fiberglass is most commonly found in memory foam beds, this doesn’t mean you won’t find it in hybrid or innerspring mattresses. It also doesn’t mean all memory foam mattresses have fiberglass.
Is fiberglass harmful?
Fiberglass is only harmful if you’re exposed to it. In other words, if it’s remained deep inside the mattress’ layers and there are no tears, it shouldn’t be a health risk. However, there’s a risk of exposure if your mattress is poorly made. If exposed to fiberglass, people can experience different complications, such as skin and eye irritation and even respiratory tract issues.
Is it legal to use fiberglass in mattresses?
Yes, it’s legal to use fiberglass in mattresses because the material meets federal safety standards. However, it must be inside the mattress cover, contained in a way that ensures it cannot be released.
What should I do if I buy a mattress that has fiberglass in it?
The first thing to remember is to always keep your mattress cover on because most of those fibers are easily found closer to the cover if not on the inside of it. It’s also a good idea to add a mattress protector as an extra barrier. Lastly, if your bed has fiberglass, and you notice the cover is damaged, you should replace it immediately.
