Nectar Hybrid Mattress Review for 2024, Expert Tested

Pressure relief can help with overall comfort, and if you’ve already got achy joints, then it’s especially important. To test for this, I use a pressure map for back and side sleeping, which are two positions that need it most. 

I place the map on top of the mattress and then lie on it. The map is designed to pick up any pressure accumulation. Blue and green mean little to no pressure whereas red and yellow mean there is pressure. 

My pressure map for side sleeping showed some buildup around my shoulder, but I really dug how it contoured around my hips while on my side. The pressure map for back sleeping showed nothing but green.

I took off a half point only because of the pressure buildup in my shoulder for side sleeping.

Is the Nectar Classic Hybrid Good for Pain Relief?

I’d say this Nectar has some qualities that could be helpful for pain relief, but keep in mind it will also depend on the type of pain, your body type, and your sleeping position.

The Nectar Classic Hybrid provides support through a combination of foam and coil layers. First up, you have a Dynamic Response Layer, which is foam geared toward support. Then, you have the 8-inch thick coil unit. This is followed by a base foam layer for additional support.

I tested this by assessing how well the bed kept me lifted in each sleeping position. I would have liked to see a little more support for my back while in the supine (back sleeping) position, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker. While on my stomach, my hips felt elevated and my spine was pretty aligned. Support for side sleeping was good overall. 

I’d say this bed isn’t a superstar but superstar-adjacent. For this reason, I gave it a 4 out of 5 here.

If you share a bed and one of you moves around a lot of night, motion isolation can be a big help. Motion isolation means that movement on one side isn’t transferred to the other. Bottom line? You’re less likely to notice your partner moving.

I tested motion isolation by using a seismograph app, which can pick up motion disturbances. I lay on the bed while my colleague, Corey, gently got on the mattress. He also bounced up and down while in a seated position. 

As you can see in the seismograph reading, very little movement was shown, and I barely felt Corey’s movements. Based on these results, it was easy to hand the Classic Hybrid a perfect score in this category.

Waking up in the middle of the night all hot and sweaty isn’t my idea of a great night’s sleep, and if you feel the same, then cooling is important. I used a temperature gun to take the initial temperature of the mattress without lying on it. I then lay on the bed for five minutes and took a temperature reading. That was followed by another five minutes of lying down and a final 10-minute temperature check. 

The cooling on this was impressive, especially for a mattress that doesn’t promote itself as actively cooling. The Nectar Classic Hybrid was cool to the touch even though it has considerably less cooling than the brand’s Premier or Luxe models.

The initial reading was 69.1 degrees, then 76.6 degrees after five minutes, and 73.3 after 10 minutes. Even though it started cooling back down around 10 minutes, it still went up 7.5 degrees at first, which is why I took off a point.

Many people like the feeling of a bouncy mattress, and the quick response can often make repositioning easier. This feature is usually helpful for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and anyone with limited mobility.

To test this, I dropped a 10-pound medicine ball on the mattress and jumped on it to see how quickly the bed’s material’s bounce back. I also looked at how easy it was for me to change positions.

While jumping on the bed, I sank pretty far to the bottom, but the bed regained its original shape quickly. The medicine ball landed with a decent thud, but it did bounce back up more than I expected. I felt a little stuck moving around on the bed, but it wasn’t horrible.

This mattress shouldn’t be bad for combination sleepers, but sexually active folks may not find it the easiest to reposition on. Based on these results, I gave the Nectar Classic Hybrid a 3.5 for bounce. 

Edge support can be valuable because it gives you more useable surface space on a mattress. Plus, many people like to sit on the edge of their bed or need secure edges to get in and out of bed more easily. 

I tested this by sitting at the edge of the Nectar Classic Hybrid for a minute tying my shoes and then lying on the edge for another minute. During my seated test, I sank but still felt secure enough, even while bending over.  Lying down, I was held up well. 

I took off a point because I still sank while sitting, which might be a problem for some older sleepers or anyone with limited mobility. 

Our accessibility score looks at ways the mattress and/or brand go above and beyond. The Nectar Classic Hybrid has some helpful attributes that I liked. These include a now fiberglass-free construction and handles for easier transport. 

While Nectar’s sleep trial and warranty are standout features, this hybrid has a pretty basic design compared to other hybrids. I gave it a 3.5 here because even though it’s a reliable hybrid, I was expecting more bounce from it, which is one of the reasons why some folks may prefer these types of mattresses. Also, even though Nectar has white glove delivery, it comes at an additional cost of $199.

Nectar has some of the best consumer policies among top online brands. This includes a year-long sleep trial, their Forever warranty, and free returns. They also make it easy to get in touch with them. You can ask questions via their online chat system, email, or phone, and they have a brief online mattress quiz to help point you toward the right mattress.

I took off a point here because I’ve had mixed experiences using the brand’s online chat system. Sometimes it’s helpful, and other times, the answer they provide is confusing.

We grade a mattress a mattress for couples in several ways. First, we see how it does in other performance categories valuable to co-sleepers, including overall support, edge support, cooling, motion isolation, and bounce (for sexually active couples).

We also look at the overall firmness rating and whether the bed’s weight limit can comfortably support two people. Typically, a good bed for couples has a medium-firm feel since this is usually the most versatile.

The Nectar Classic Hybrid has a medium-firm feel, and a queen size can support up to 1,000 pounds. This bed performed well in nearly all categories. I deducted a point here only because I don’t think it offers much bounce for sexually active couples, but it still has a lot of great qualities for couples in general.

Construction: What’s Inside the Nectar Classic Hybrid?

The Nectar Classic Hybrid stands 12 inches tall and has a recently updated construction. Including the top and lower covers, this bed comes with six layers.

• A breathable cooling cover sits at the top of the mattress and includes an antimicrobial treatment. The cover is meant to dissipate and wick away heat and moisture while the antimicrobial treatment keeps bacteria at bay.
• The Therapeutic Memory Foam is an inch thick and delivers pressure relief to the neck, back, shoulders, and hips.
• The Responsive Support Layer is 2 inches thick. This foam unit is meant to assist with spine support.
• The coil unit consists of 8-inch high individually wrapped coils. The brand individually wraps each coil so they move independently for better motion control, and they’ve added two rows of thicker coils along the edges to boost edge support. Along with motion control and edge support, this layer helps with overall support and airflow.
• The foundation layer is a conventional foam unit that rests below the coils for added support and stability.
• At the very bottom is the Shift-Resistant Lower Cover, which is meant to keep everything steady and in place.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Nectar Classic Hybrid comes compressed and rolled into a box for easy shipping. Once it arrives on your doorstep, you should be able to easily carry it to the bedroom with the help of a friend or family member. 

You can place the mattress on the bed foundation and open the package to allow the mattress to unroll right on the bed frame. This hybrid takes several hours to decompress, and you may notice an initial off-gassing smell. We suggest you leave it for 24-48 hours, which is how long most bed-in-a-box mattresses take to decompress and ventilate.

So how did Nectar’s revamped Classic Hybrid hold up? 

I think this bed has a lot going for it, which is shown in my testing results. The only performance category I would have liked to see a better score from is bounce, so I probably wouldn’t recommend this one for sexually active couples. However, I think it’s a solid choice for many types of sleepers, especially average-weight back and stomach sleepers. I also think hot sleepers will be a good match for this one.

Overall, the Nectar Classic Hybrid earned a 4.1 out of 5.
