A good mattress gives you a supportive, cozy place to sleep each night. A luxury mattress turns bedtime into a full-on pampering event. Here, I’ve collected the best luxury beds we’ve tested.
What distinguishes a luxury mattress from other beds? Well, a luxury mattress will boast memorable bells and whistles. It might have unique cooling technology, proprietary comfort materials, or handcrafted touches that elevate it above the competition. But of course, the best luxury mattress is the one that helps you sleep soundly.
We’ve gathered our top premium mattresses here after testing them all at our studio. They may have slightly higher price points than other mattresses on the market, but our in-depth reviews can tell you why they’re worth it.

How Did We Choose the Best Luxury Beds?
As with all the mattresses we review, we put luxury mattresses through a series of tests to evaluate how they perform for different sleeping positions and various body types.
We use tools like electronic pressure relief maps, temperature guns, and seismograph readings to evaluate each mattress.
We also grade them based on how they feel when we play out certain scenarios: tying our shoes on the edge of the bed, for example, or even jumping up and down on the surface.
Given the cost of luxury mattresses, we also held their materials and craftsmanship to a higher standard than usual. We settled on the below criteria for finding a truly luxurious bed that’s worth its price.
What to Look for in a Luxury Mattress
Standout Features
A luxury mattress should feature materials that look good, feel good, and hold up well over time. But it should also strive to impress you with noteworthy “extras,” such as a unique piece of cooling technology or an extra coil unit.
The mattresses below have earned their luxury stripes by incorporating at least one feature that wowed us. Because of their special touches, they stand apart from the competition (while still offering premium support and pressure relief).
Impressive Height
Every mattress on this list is at least 13 inches tall, with some of them clocking in at 15 (or even 16!) inches. When a mattress is that thick, you can bet it’s packed with long-lasting layers for a truly opulent sleeping experience.
A taller mattress also makes a bigger statement inside a bedroom, and looks especially good on a classy bed frame.
Generous Trial Periods and Warranties
Most top mattress brands let you test a mattress over a trial period, giving you time to sleep on it at home before deciding whether or not to commit to the purchase.
Generally, the luxury mattress brands we feature give you anywhere from 90 to 365 days to test their mattresses. This is an important metric because it prevents you from spending thousands of dollars on a bed only to be dissatisfied and unable to send it back.
Note that return policies vary among brands, so do read these details carefully as you shop. Some will let you return a bed for free, others will charge you a shipping fee.
Luxury mattresses also usually have long warranties. At a minimum, a luxury brand should offer a 10-year warranty, though some offer 15 or 20 years. A longer warranty can provide peace of mind because it means the brand stands behind the quality of their product.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Size

Side Sleepers
This bed feels both cushy and supportive, a great mix for people who sleep on their sides.
Heavyweight Sleepers
Our heavyweight tester enjoyed the feel of this mattress on his back and side, and was well-supported by its many layers.
Sensitive Sleepers
We hardly felt any motion transfer when we rolled around next to each other.
Helix Midnight Elite Pros
At 16 inches tall with three coil units, this bed represents the literal height of luxury
Moving around should feel seamless, a boon for combination sleepers and sexually active couples
In our experience, it feels secure and supportive when you’re on your back, but swaddling and cozy when you’re on your side
Helix Midnight Elite Cons
It’s so tall that it comes in two boxes, and you’ll have to attach the topmost layer yourself
Stomach sleepers will need a firmer bed to prevent sinking around the midsection

The Advisor Says: Those looking for a little something extra from their mattress should be delighted by the Helix Midnight Elite. Helix’s Midnight line was designed for side sleepers in particular, and this bed represents the fanciest model available from the brand. It has three coil units (two layers of mico-coils and one larger innerspring layer) and five total foam layers adding up to its 16-inch height.
We thought it felt extremely welcoming, luxurious, and lofty, but we wouldn’t recommend it for budget shoppers or stomach sleepers.
What Makes the Helix Midnight Elite a Luxury Mattress?
I call this bed “a whole unit and then some.”
It’s the most opulent model available from the Helix brand, and it stands a whopping 16 inches tall with three separate coil units (two layers of micro-coils and one base layer of taller springs).
That’s the most coil layers I can remember seeing in any bed I’ve reviewed! But even with all those coils, this mattress is as cradling as it is lofty.
Why Did It Win Editor’s Pick?
We gave it high scores (4.5 out of 5) in both support and pressure relief. The springs give it some great bounce, but impressively, it also earned a 4 out of 5 in motion isolation.
All in all, it’s an extremely well-balanced luxury mattress with precious few drawbacks.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
I gave this bed a firmness rating of 6 out of 10, which is on the softer side of medium-firm. Its support elements are buffered by cushioning foams.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
I felt best on my side and back. On my stomach, my hips were dipping into the bed slightly, which can spell discomfort for my lower back.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
There was an intriguing difference in feel between testing this bed on my side vs. on my back. On my side, I felt much more cushion around the key pressure points of my shoulders and hips. On my back, the mattress felt more flat and supportive—enough so that I recommend it for heavier back sleepers.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Elite
Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Elite mattress for its excellent balance of comfort and support, which is tailored for side sleepers. Some report it to be less suitable for those who prefer a very firm mattress.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

It’s more cushioned than its predecessor, the original DreamCloud, and a good fit for side sleepers who want lots of support.

Bounce Fans
It’s a springy, responsive mattress even though it has lots of foam near the top.
DreamCloud Premier Pros
It balances softness and support a bit better than the original DreamCloud, with more cushion in its upper layers
Our spinal alignment felt great on our sides and backs
It’s a responsive bed with a fair amount of bounce
DreamCloud Premier Cons
When we tested it on our stomachs, our lower backs dipped lower than we would have liked

The Advisor Says: Its fancy quilted cover and generous foam layers make the DreamCloud Premier a slightly softer bed than the original DreamCloud. But, it still skews firm for a hybrid, so it’s best for back and side sleepers who like an initial bit of cushion followed by lots of lift.
What Makes the DreamCloud Premier a Luxury Mattress?
This bed is an upgraded version of one of my all-time favorite hybrids, the DreamCloud.
It has more memory foam inside it than its predecessor, making its 13-inch profile better suited to side sleepers. Its cashmere blend cover also feels very fancy.
What Makes It Affordable?
When discounts are active, this is probably the least expensive luxury bed on our list.
A queen at full price costs around $2,000, but around certain holidays, you can buy a DreamCloud Premier for less than $1,000.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
Slightly firmer than average, I’d say. I waffled between giving it a 6.5 or a 7 out of 10 on our scale. That extra inch of memory foam does make it softer than the original DreamCloud.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
I enjoyed this bed the most on my side and back. It preserved my spinal alignment in both positions, and its first foam layers were pleasantly plush. On my stomach, my midsection dipped too low for comfort.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
I was intrigued by how this bed could skew firmer and accommodate side sleepers. I chalk this up to the fact that it has four distinct foams beneath its cashmere blend cover, which is an above-average number of comfort layers for a hybrid.
Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Fans of Convenience

Saatva Classic Pros
All the built-in lumbar features really kept our lower backs lifted and supported
The edge support on this bed is something else—those foam rails make you feel very secure
You can customize the bed’s firmness level and height
Saatva Classic Cons
There’s very little motion isolation to be had on this bed, so you may feel a partner’s movements; check out the best memory foam beds if a calm surface is important to you

The Advisor Says: The Saatva Classic is the gold standard for lower-back support, strong edges, and customizable luxury. It’s not the softest or most motion-isolating bed out there, but it’s a dependable, bouncy hybrid that consistently impresses our testers with its two coil units.
What Makes the Saatva Classic a Luxury Mattress?
In my opinion, the Saatva brand is rightfully synonymous with luxury. It’s no surprise that the Classic gives you everything you need in a high-end mattress: comfort, support, durability, and an extra touch (in this case, dual spring units) that’s hard to find elsewhere.
What Makes It So Firm?
When you order this bed, there are three firmnesses and two heights to choose from (along with free white glove delivery for the ultimate high-end experience).
I tested the Luxury Firm and found it to be firmer than I expected due to the thickness of the foam in the pillow top. The Firm option promises to be even more bracing!
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
Pretty firm! I gave the Luxury Firm model a 7 out of 10, which is just edging into firm territory on our scale. You can also order this bed in Plush Soft or Firm, depending on your preferences.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
Honestly, I was a fan of this bed in all three sleeping positions. My midsection was elevated across the board and I could move around easily.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
The lumbar features in this bed have a pronounced effect. There’s a strip of foam just under the lower back, as well as zoned coils and firmer quilting in that area. Consequently, the other testers and I felt like our lumbar spines were getting the lift and support they needed.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.
Multiple firmness options (Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus). We tested the Luxury Firm and placed it at a 6 out of 10 on our scale, which is comfortably medium-firm.
Size
Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
Combination Sleepers
Its springiness makes it easy to change your sleeping position, and it adapts well to each one.
Hot Sleepers
Gel-infused foams, airflow around the coils, and a breathable cover earned the WinkBed a high cooling score.
Spine Alignment
Its zoned coils and “LumbarLayer™” of foam help to keep the lower back supported and aligned with the rest of the spine.
WinkBed Pros
There are four firmness options available for this bed, including one designed specifically for plus-size sleepers
It’s so springy that it feels like it’s helping you to move around on top of it
The zoned support was really noticeable during testing, and helped to keep our lumbar regions lifted
WinkBed Cons
Its motion isolation isn’t the greatest, so if you’re a restless sleeper who shares a bed, look elsewhere
It has a classic hybrid feel that keeps you on top of the mattress, rather than sinking in; if you want more of a hug from your bed, browse the best soft mattresses

The Advisor Says: Our testers often compare the WinkBed to a luxury hotel mattress, which is no surprise given its handcrafted touches and elegant hybrid design. It’s also one of the most customizable beds out there, with a firmness level for every body type.
What Makes the WinkBed a Luxury Mattress?
The WinkBed is a hybrid model with a springy, lifted surface and handcrafted touches.
Inside, foam layers and pocketed coils work to support your lower back in particular. We all agreed it felt like a hotel-quality bed.
What Makes It Great for Heavy People?
With four firmness options, you can tailor your WinkBed to your unique needs.
The “Plus” model was built specifically for plus-sized sleepers, but heavy people can also pick a plusher model for more pressure relief, or a firmer one for a more rigid surface, and feel properly supported on each.
The WinkBed also holds up great over time (the brand conducts a lot of stress-testing to make sure of this).
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
We tested the Luxury Firm WinkBed and gave it a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which signifies a medium-firm feel. It’s cushy on top but with lots of lift from its supportive base.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
I loved the WinkBed on my back and stomach. I was comfortable on my side, too, but our lightweight and heavyweight testers both felt some pressure buildup around their shoulders.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
I think this one of the best mattresses available for combination sleepers (i.e. anyone who changes their sleeping position during the night). It’s very responsive, so it doesn’t hold you stuck with sinking foams, and its edge support is stellar if you tend to spread out.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Couples

Nolah Evolution Pros

The cooling border gusset really makes a difference, as this bed did not hold onto heat
It’s both bouncy and motion-isolating, a rare combination
Nolah Evolution Cons

The Advisor Says: The Nolah Evolution is a team favorite with a highly competitive score spread—our testers gave it at least a 4 out of 5 in every single performance category. It’s definitely a luxury mattress, with the height (and price) to match.
What Makes the Nolah Evolution a Luxury Mattress?
Its seven layers—including a quilted Euro top—and signature materials earn the Nolah Evolution its designation as a true luxury mattress.
At 15 inches tall, it’s packed to the brim with specialized materials and cooling elements.
What Makes It Great for Side Sleepers?
The Nolah Evolution has a smorgasbord of pillowy layers ideal for side sleeping.
It features a proprietary graphite-infused foam (AirFoamICE™), plus two additional foam layers underneath that lead into a zoned spring system.
When you have that much foam in a hybrid, you can bet that your shoulders and hips will be well-cradled. I was perfectly aligned on my side while testing the Luxury Firm version, but I bet the Soft model would feel even plusher to exclusive side sleepers.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
I tested the Luxury Firm version of this bed and thought it was right in the medium-firm sweet spot: a 6.5 out of 10 on our scale. Its upper layers are quite soft and cozy, but you can feel the full-body support from underneath.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
All three sleeping positions felt awesome on this bed. Our heavyweight tester felt like he might need more support while on his stomach, but otherwise, this is a big crowd-pleaser.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
It’s hard to choose just one aspect—this mattress got 5 out of 5 in multiple performance categories—but I’ll shout out the cooling. It lowered its surface temperature fast during testing, and not many mattresses have a gusset up top that helps to vent out heat.
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution
Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Back Sleepers
The lumbar support on this bed felt fantastic under our lower backs.
Bounce Fans

Couples

Bear Elite Hybrid Pros
You’ll have three firmness options to choose from
We got some real air while jumping on this bed, and never felt restricted by or stuck in its upper foam layers when moving around
The zoned coils gave our lower backs noticeable support and kept our spines aligned
Bear Elite Hybrid Cons

The Advisor Says: This is a memorably bouncy and supportive hybrid with state-of-the-art cooling elements. It had a delightful balance of cushion and lift for back and stomach sleeping in particular.
What Makes the Bear Elite Hybrid a Luxury Mattress?
The Elite Hybrid is Bear’s most luxurious mattress: a 14-inch-tall hybrid with some serious cooling elements and bounce.
For an additional fee, you can even augment its cover with Celliant®, a fiber that may promote recovery for tired muscles.
What Makes It a Great Hybrid?
We got some noteworthy airtime when jumping on this bed—it’s as responsive and bouncy as it is supportive, both key parts of a quality hybrid mattress.
Its surface is soft and inviting, but its lumbar support felt strong and kept our lower backs lifted.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
About a 6 out of 10 on our scale, on the softer side of medium-firm. This is another bed with multiple firmness options available, though—we tested the Medium.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
I liked this mattress the most on my back and stomach. I felt buoyed and secure simultaneously.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
The bounce! It’s so easy to move around on, there’s no risk of feeling stuck or sunken.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid
According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

The Advisor Says: The plush top gives this bed a soothing amount of sink, but those two coil units are there to keep your spine aligned and provide some real bounce. Our testers thought that people of all body types would feel almost weightless while back- or side-sleeping on this mattress, but didn’t recommend it for stomach sleepers.
What Makes the Sedona Elite a Luxury Mattress?
The Arizona-based Brooklyn Bedding brand embraces their home state (but not its heat!) with their Sedona Elite mattress.
Boasting two coil units for that luxury-bed touch, it backs up its initially plush feel with stable support for all body types.
What Makes It Great for Hot Sleepers?
A cooling cover, the double coil units, and copper-infused foam all helped this bed earn a high score from us in the cooling department.
When we got up from the bed, the cover didn’t take long at all to lower its temperature and feel pleasantly crisp once more.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
This is a softer bed, at a 5 out of 10 on our scale. It really wraps around your body when you lie down.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
This mattress felt absolutely heavenly on my side and back. It’s far too soft for stomach sleepers, though.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
Because it’s so soft and cradling, I didn’t expect the bed to be responsive, too. Surprise: it earned a perfect 5 out of 5 for its bounce, and it still isolated motion well.
Customer Reviews of the Sedona Elite
On Brooklyn’s website, the Sedona Elite ranks 4.8 out of 5 stars. One potential drawback of the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona mattress is its higher price point, but customers noted that it offers exceptional comfort and support, particularly for those seeking a luxury sleep experience.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

The Advisor Says: The Saatva Rx was built for folks with chronic pain concerns. We think its support and pressure relief should provide soothing comfort. It should work for just about anyone who’s been let down by their mattress and wants to upgrade to a luxurious, sturdy bed with a well-balanced feel.
What Makes the Saatva Rx a Luxury Mattress?
As the name implies, the Saatva Rx is a luxury mattress specifically designed for sleepers with medical conditions that exacerbate back pain.
Its most unique feature? The Rx Foam Modules™ that cap each and every spring, adding softness directly on top of the coils.
What Makes It Great for Back Pain?
This bed keeps you supported while adjusting to your movements, working to ensure that pressure won’t build up in sensitive areas.
We gave it perfect scores in both support and pressure relief—exactly what you’d want to see if you have a sore back.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
I gave this bed a 6 out of 10, meaning it’s medium-firm with some delightful softness to its upper layers. I felt lifted but it still felt delightfully squishy around my joints.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
The Saatva Rx felt great while I lounged on my back and side. On my stomach, it was slightly too soft beneath my midsection.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
Even with the foam-capped coils, it still retains a lot of responsiveness. We felt positively launched when we bounced around on top of it. Its springiness helps with movement, whereas the foam cradles you when you stay in place—a really nice balance.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Rx
Customers on Saatva’s website have awarded the Saatva Rx 4.8 out of 5 stars on average. The bed has around 50 reviews, praising the bed for helping with chronic back and neck pain, with only a few mentioning drawbacks such as lackluster edges.

Couples
With high marks in both motion isolation and bounce, this hybrid strikes a rare sweet spot for couples.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers should enjoy the softness of the Euro top around their hips and shoulders.
Back Sleepers
Our tester actually thought this bed firmed up a little when she switched to her back, giving her the support that this position needs.
Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Pros
With its Euro top and seven total layers, this bed emulates a fancy hotel mattress quite well
It balances its responsiveness and motion isolation so that you get impressive amounts of both
Multiple firmness options make it simple to choose the right feel for your body type and sleeping position
Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Cons
We weren’t blown away by the bed’s cooling capabilities, even though it has “Chill” in its name; peruse the best cooling mattresses for some better options
Given how much our tester’s hips dipped into the bed, it’s not a superior mattress for stomach sleepers (though the Firm model may be better suited to this position)

The Advisor Says: The Leesa Sapira Chill is a sophisticated hybrid bed that looks and feels classy. We were especially taken with how well it adapted to back and side sleeping. On her back, our tester felt like the Medium model was stable and supportive; on her side, it seemed to soften up to better cushion her shoulders and hips. One caveat, though, is that it’s not as much of a cooling superstar as its name would suggest.
What Makes the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid a Luxury Mattress?
With its pillowy Euro top and zoned support, I thought this mattress looked and felt just like a hotel bed.
You get three firmness options to choose from—plush, medium-firm, and firm—so picky sleepers can customize the feel.
What Makes It Great for Couples?
This mattress has a versatile feel that almost changes to suit your sleeping position, which makes it great for couples with different sleep styles. On my side, I felt well-cushioned and cozy; on my back, it felt like the support rose up to meet me just where I needed it.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
I gave the Medium-Firm version of this bed a 6 out of 10 firmness score on our scale, so it’s on the softer end of medium-firm. But it really feels more like a 5 out of 10 (that is, more plush) when I’m on my side specifically.
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
Side sleepers and back sleepers should both enjoy this mattress, and I think combination sleepers will be all set, too. Exclusive stomach sleepers may want something firmer, though.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
The variability in its firmness, depending on how I was lying down! I thought this was a big plus. Sometimes, back sleepers and side sleepers can’t agree on a bed because the first group needs more of a rigid feel than the second. But this should hybrid represents a nice compromise.

The Advisor Says: We had such a fun time with the foams in the comfort layers of this bed. When you first lie down, the mattress feels quite firm. But then you can actually feel the foam layers molding to your unique shape, all while support is maintained under your spine. It’s extremely cool and crisp to the touch—definitely one of the most advanced cooling mattresses we’ve ever encountered.
Since the responsiveness is not quite there, though, it’s not a great match for people who love a springy, super-firm surface. Its specialized materials also come at quite a high price.
What Makes the Tempur-Pedic LuxeBreeze® a Luxury Mattress?
Despite its many benefits, memory foam tends to run hot. However, the LuxeBreeze® seeks to give sleepers the luxuriousness of this material without the overheating.
According to Tempur-Pedic, this bed sleeps up to 10 degrees cooler than its contemporaries, with a temperature-regulating cover and more cooling-focused variations of the brand’s TEMPUR® Material foam.
What Makes It a Great Foam Mattress?
Based on my experience testing the bed, I can confirm that it’s almost supernaturally cold to the touch—all that chilled-out foam feels blessedly cool.
When my fellow testers and I first laid down, the foam layers felt firm, but then progressively and palpably softened around our bodies. My spine was still lifted, but the gradual cushioning felt amazing.
Notes from Our Testers
How firm did the mattress feel?
At first, it felt quite firm—almost an 8 out of 10 on our scale! But then the foam adapted, softening around me until it was about a 6 out of 10. I’ve never really felt a mattress shift in firmness so noticeably!
What sleeping positions felt the most comfortable?
I was digging this bed on my side and back the most. On my stomach, I was still comfortable, it just felt a bit soft under my hips and I worried about them sinking more over time.
What stood out to you the most when testing this bed?
This mattress did a great job of hugging around my pressure points and keeping my spine lifted (which is notable in a foam bed). Not only that, but I could feel its cooling powers kick in within seconds.
Customer Reviews of the Tempur-Pedic LuxeBreeze®

A luxury mattress goes above and beyond in its design, and this effort is reflected in its performance.
These beds are made with notably high-end materials and singular or state-of-the-art features. They’re often constructed with the help of expert craftsmen and specialized manufacturing processes.
For example, luxury beds may highlight eco-friendly and hypoallergenic materials, such as organic latex or cotton. They may also have proprietary materials specially made by the company.
On top of that, luxury mattresses have specific features you won’t be able to find in standard beds—a high-tech cooling cover, an extra layer of springs, or a cloud-like pillow top are all common “extras.”

Yes, a premium mattress is worth it if its specialized features help to boost your sleep quality.
A good luxury mattress should be more than some pretty padding — it should incorporate top-notch layers that directly impact how well you sleep.
How will you know if you’ve found the right luxury mattress for you? Consider whether you’re experiencing the following benefits:
Less joint pain: Your joints hurt when they endure too much pressure or they’re positioned in a way that causes strain. A proper mattress supports your joints and guards against these scenarios.
Less irritation due to allergies: A deluxe mattress should guard against dust mites and allergens. Many are made with hypoallergenic and antimicrobial materials.
More customization: Many luxury mattresses offer multiple options in terms of their firmness, height, cooling features, and more. If you’re paying a bit more for your bed, you should be able to ensure it meets your specific needs.
More and better sleep: When your mattress provides both the support and cushioning that allow your body to fully relax, you’ll experience deep, rejuvenating rest.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Luxury Mattress
Sleeping Position
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers typically prefer a medium-firm mattress that will help keep their spine well-aligned while providing pressure relief around their lower back and shoulders.
Stomach Sleepers
Folks who sleep on their stomach need to keep their hips elevated to help prevent lower back pain, which is why firmer, highly supportive mattresses are generally more appealing to them.
Side Sleepers
As for side sleepers, softer mattresses can often be a good fit for them because they put a lot of weight on their shoulders and hips, and mattresses with more cradling can help relieve that pressure.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers need a mattress that can adapt to their body in different sleeping positions. For this reason, they often go for medium or medium-firm beds since these offer the most universal feel. Also, these sleepers often need a bit of bounce to help them switch positions without feeling stuck in the mattress.
Your Weight and Body Type
Lightweight Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)
Petite sleepers will likely prefer a softer bed that cradles them and helps with pressure relief, though some may enjoy a medium or medium-firm bed for back and/or stomach sleeping. My colleague, Loren Bullock, is our resident lightweight tester, so we include her feedback in our reviews as well.
Average-Weight Sleepers (130 – 230 pounds)
Sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds can enjoy many mattresses, but we’d suggest staying within the medium firmness range. However, some average-weight stomach sleepers might like firmer beds. I’m an average-weight sleeper myself, and our reviews highlight my experience in each position for this weight group.
Heavyweight Sleepers (Over 230 pounds)
Heavier people typically sleep better on a firmer mattress that can support their weight. Many top brands have also made a concerted effort to better cater to plus-size sleepers by making quality beds specifically for their body type. Our teammate, Spencer Bland, provides feedback as our plus-size tester in our reviews.
Firmness
Typically, mattresses are labeled as soft, medium, or firm. The right firmness level for you will depend on the position you sleep in and your body weight. Firmness reflects the overall feel of the mattress, and although it can influence support, it’s important to note that they are not the same.
How Do We Test It?
Brands and experts usually rate firmness on a 1-10 scale, and we do this here at Sleep Advisor as well. A rating of 10 would mean the bed is as hard as sleeping on the floor; 1 would mean the mattress is softer than a cotton ball.
A supportive mattress will keep your body evenly “lifted” and prevent sagging or sinking. It’s support that fosters spinal alignment, which is a clinical way of saying that your back is held relatively straight and neutral. Without proper alignment, you may be at risk for back pain and other discomfort.
How Do We Test It?
When testing a bed, we pay a lot of attention to how aligned we look and feel. Testers of all three body types record their support scores and we compare them to decide on a final grade.
Pressure Relief
For many people, a luxury mattress should help eliminate aches and pains. This is where pressure-relieving materials can help.
Luxury mattresses often have better pressure-relieving capabilities due to higher-quality materials and construction, such as premium memory foam or a very thick, plush pillow top.
How Do We Test It?
When we test for pressure relief, we use a pressure map with all three testers representing each body weight/type.
They switch between side and back sleeping on the map, which then shows pressure buildup via red, yellow, blue, and green.
Red and yellow show pressure buildup, while blue and green indicate good pressure relief from the mattress.
Cooling
Luxury beds often have temperature-regulating materials in their design. Innerspring, hybrid, and latex models sleep cooler since coils foster airflow, and latex is naturally temperature-neutral.
Standard memory foam often traps heat, but many manufacturers now infuse the foam with gel and other cooling materials to help prevent heat accumulation.
How Do We Test It?
When we test for cooling, we first take the initial surface temperature of the mattress. Next, we lie on the mattress for at least five minutes, after which we take the surface temperature again.
We then lie for another five minutes and check the temperature a third time to see if it goes up and by how much. We think good cooling is when the temperature doesn’t increase significantly (at most, 5 or 10 degrees).
Motion Isolation
If you sleep with a partner or pet, a luxury mattress with good motion isolation will be useful. Beds that prevent motion transfer help keep co-sleepers from being disturbed by the movements of their bedmate.
The density of memory foam does an excellent job of absorbing motion and can be a great choice for couples.
If you prefer a bed with coils, look for a hybrid with memory foam and individually wrapped coils since these will help isolate motion better.
How Do We Test It?
Our motion isolation test involves using a seismograph app to monitor movement when someone moves around on the bed.
Bigger waves on our seismograph reading mean more motion is picked up, while smaller waves mean the bed absorbs most of the movement. We also have team members lie side by side to see how much movement they feel when the other person moves.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well your mattress supports you when you’re sitting or lying on the far perimeter.
If your mattress lacks edge support, it can affect how easy it is to get in and out of bed, as well as how much of the surface area can be utilized for sleeping.
Edge support is important for many people, including couples, because it allows them to use the entire surface of the mattress.
In many cases, luxury mattresses have good edge support thanks to some type of reinforcement, whether it be high-density foam or high-gauge coils along the perimeter.
How Do We Test It?
When testing for edge support, we sit on the side of the bed for a minute, tying our shoes.
Then, we lie at the edge for another minute, after which we assess the amount of slipping and sagging for each test.
Great edge support means little to no slippage and sagging when lying or sitting on the edge of the bed.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
An innerspring mattress’s support comes from the coils inside, which are usually made from steel. The section housing the coils is covered with a comfort layer, so you don’t feel the coils through the fabric.
When coils are individually wrapped — rather than interconnected — it’s less likely you’ll feel someone else move on the bed. Typically, the more coils (or the right amount at a proper gauge), the more support you’ll enjoy.
Hybrid mattresses combine a coil base with upper layers made of a variety of foams. They are called hybrids because these mattresses take elements from innerspring and memory foam or latex mattresses and blend them into one.
Many luxury mattresses are offered in hybrid models and can appeal to lots of sleepers because they offer the support of innerspring mattresses with the gentle cradling of foam.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses typically feature an all-foam structure, with memory foam on top and denser poly foam layers further down for support.
Memory foam is fantastic for pressure relief and motion isolation, but basic memory foam beds can often run hot. Luxury memory foam models often feature advanced cooling capabilities so that sleepers can enjoy memory foam without worrying about getting too hot.
Latex Mattresses
Latex can be natural or synthetic (made from petroleum). This is a popular mattress type because of the material’s great support, responsiveness, and durability.
Latex, particularly organic latex found in eco-friendly mattresses, would be considered a more luxurious product. These beds are often more expensive, but their durability makes them longer-lasting.
Add luxury sheets – Luxury sheets, such as cashmere, bamboo, or organic cotton, are an excellent way to elevate your sleep hygiene even further.
Customize the feel with a topper – Mattress toppers are another way to make your sleep space more “fancy,” especially if they’re made from high-quality latex or memory foam.
Get luxury pillows – Look for high-quality pillows made with cozy materials like down and memory foam.
Diffuse essential oils – Some people find that diffusing essential oils in calming scents, such as lavender, helps them to fall asleep (and makes their bedroom smell like a spa!).
