Best Twin Mattresses for 2024, Tested by Experts

When you hear the words “twin size,” you may imagine a painfully thin, dorm-style mattress you could flip like a pancake. But I have good news: online mattress companies have recognized the space-saving appeal of the twin bed, and most of them carry their signature mattresses in this size.

This universal uptick in quality means that twin-size mattresses aren’t just for kids and college students anymore. They can be a great choice for adults, too.

After extensive testing by our team, I’ve collected the best twin mattresses into an easy-to-browse list, including beds for both kids and adults. (If you’re shopping for a child, though, you may want to check out our dedicated list of the best mattresses for kids.) Hopefully, there’s a twin that will win your heart below.

What’s the Best Twin Mattress?

The DreamCloud earned the title of best twin mattress because it nailed the qualities we most want to see in a bed this size: strong support, even weight distribution, and a lovely balance of coziness and lift. The cashmere blend cover is a luxurious bonus.

How We Chose the Best Twin Beds

At Sleep Advisor, we test mattresses in person so that we can assign them ratings across several performance categories, such as cooling, firmness, and pressure relief.

We also have multiple testers interact with each bed, because we want to know how they feel to different body types.

When picking the best twin mattresses, we looked at a number of crucial factors for this size. We considered twin beds for adults as well as those meant for children, and paid special attention to design elements that could distinguish a mattress from a “standard” twin.

Methodology Image- Sleep Advisor
That’s me testing mattresses in our studio!

What We Want to See in a Twin-Size Mattress

Enough Firmness and Support for the Compact Size

Because they’re one of the smallest mattress sizes available, twin beds have a reputation for being “temporary” beds with flimsy, thin constructions. But even if you’re using a twin bed as a transitional mattress, it should have enough firmness and support for healthy spinal alignment and prolonged, everyday use.

Every mattress on this list meets this requirement, whether it’s made entirely of foam or a mix of foam and springs.

A Design for a Specific Kind of Sleeper

Because they’re often intended for a specific age group or type of sleeper, twin-size beds are highly customizable and come in a wide variety of designs. Before choosing a bed, you’ll want to know who will be sleeping on it. A child? A college undergraduate? An adult guest in your home?

There are different twin beds to suit the precise needs of these populations—and different firmness levels to suit different tastes.

Sturdy Edges

Twin mattresses don’t have as much space for spreading out as the larger sizes. You’ll want to maximize the available surface area of your twin bed as much as you can by choosing a bed with decent edge support.

Strong edges can also keep you from rolling off the side of the bed during the night—a risk that particularly restless sleepers face.

Why the DreamCloud Earned Best Twin Mattress for Adults

Although its name implies fluffiness, the DreamCloud is a solidly medium-firm hybrid with an impressive amount of support. Its 12-inch height and cashmere cover also give it a touch of luxury—definitely a perk when you’re an adult with a twin bed. It should work for most adults (as well as teens and kids who like a firmer bed), so we gave it our top spot.

Who Should Sleep On It?

Take a closer look at the mattress construction of the original DreamCloud mattress
The layers inside the DreamCloud
  • Adults, teens, and kids – The twin-size DreamCloud is suitable for almost all ages (except young toddlers and infants, who have more particular mattress needs). Its all-around support does make it a bit firm, but growing children and adults alike can benefit from the spinal alignment it provides.
  • Back and stomach sleepers – These sleeping positions should feel most comfortable on the DreamCloud, which prioritizes lift and support over sink and cushion.

My Take: I’m a big fan of the DreamCloud’s spine-aligning prowess. During testing, it kept me from sinking into the weird angles that might lead to soreness.

Pros: What I Liked

  • A nice mix of softness and support – For me, the DreamCloud’s medium-firmness is the ideal blend of soft pressure relief with a supportive feel. The initial plushness of its foams is backed up by a reassuringly firm foundation.
  • Fairly priced – I’m always surprised that this bed doesn’t cost more. It’s a hybrid, so expect to pay a slightly higher price than you would for an all-foam bed, but a twin-size DreamCloud often goes for around $500 when sales are running.

Cons

  • Too firm for side sleeping – “DreamCloud isn’t our favorite for side sleepers,” my fellow tester Stuart remarked. “It’s just a little too firm for the average person to sink into.” This quality could lead to pressure buildup around the hips and shoulders, which you definitely don’t want.
  • The edges could be stronger – “DreamCloud is a bit lackluster on the edges,” said Stuart. If you need a lot of room to stretch out on your twin bed, then I recommend looking into beds with more edge support.

What Customers Think of the DreamCloud

The DreamCloud Original scores a solid 4.7 out of 5 stars among customers on its site. One potential downside of the DreamCloud Original mattress is its weight, making it challenging to move or rotate, but it offers excellent support and comfort for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

Why the Helix Kids Earned Best Twin Mattress for Kids

The Helix Kids has a flippable construction: in the center is a sturdy innerspring unit with reinforced edges, sandwiched between comfort foams on either side. We think it’s a fantastic twin bed for kids because of the strong coils at its core and the sheer number of convenient add-ons, including a protective finish that repels spills, an odor-fighting “microbe shield” treatment, and a breathable Tencel™ cover.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • 3- to 7-year olds Toddlers and younger children should sleep on the firmer side of the Helix Kids, which features a denser, springy foam for added support.
  • 8- to 12-year olds Older kids can sleep on the softer side of this twin bed.

Our Take: Though it costs a pretty penny, this twin bed meets high standards for both safety and convenience. We like that it has a strong innerspring core, no fiberglass, and a GREENGUARD Gold Certification for its emission levels.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Flippable design – This bed is the first of several flippable twin beds for kids on our list. The softer side accommodates smaller kids who are 3 to 7 years old, while the firmer side is built for kids aged 8 to 12.
  • Edges hold up – The coils extend all the way to the bed’s edges and provide extra reinforcement along the perimeter. Kids should be able to spread out to their heart’s content on the steady, springy surface and make full use of the twin-sized space.

Cons

  • Synthetic foams – If you’re looking for an all-natural kid’s bed, this one isn’t it. The foams are certified by CertiPUR-US®, however, so they’re guaranteed to be free of potentially harmful substances found in low-quality foams.
  • Pricey for a kid’s bed – At nearly $750 for a twin, we wouldn’t say this bed is a budget option. In our opinion, though, it’s worth the cost.

What Customers Think of the Helix Kids

On the Helix website, this mattress is rated 4.3 out of 5 stars. The Helix Kids mattress provides customizable comfort for young customers, but some customers may find the initial setup process slightly complex.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Twin Mattress for Back Pain

WinkBeds Mattress Construction
A view of the layers inside the WinkBed

A good twin mattress shouldn’t be flimsy or too thin, especially if you suffer from issues like back pain. Thankfully, the WinkBed has a robust twin model with all the support features of its larger sizes. That means awesome edge support, zoned springs with extra lift for the lower back, and even a lumbar-focused foam layer.

Additionally, you can fine-tune the firmness a bit. In all firmness options, though, “you get the proper elevation you need to keep your hips elevated and spine in place,” Loren said.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • Adults who weigh up to 250 pounds – The WinkBed is exceptionally versatile and can accommodate all sleeping positions, so long as the firmness level you order suits yours. However, we don’t necessarily recommend this core model for heavy people—the WinkBed Plus would be a better option.

Our Take: “The pressure-relieving foams and zoned support work to keep your body weight evenly distributed, and the built-in lumbar support helps to prevent back pain.” – Loren, Lead Product Tester

Pros: What I Liked

  • Keeps you lifted – “The mattress is very bouncy and buoyant,” Loren reported. Rather than sinking into the layers, you should feel “the coils keep your body mostly elevated.”
  • Extra-strong edges – During testing, Loren noted that “those reinforced edges really do pay off. Seniors and couples will benefit from this the most because it’s easy to get in and out of bed.”

Cons

  • You’ll probably feel your partner’s movements – “This bed does not have the best motion isolation,” Loren cautioned. “If you or your partner are a lighter sleeper, you may want to look for a foam mattress.”
  • Not for foam lovers – As a hybrid bed, the WinkBed won’t swaddle you with foam, which some people prefer. Instead, you’ll feel boosted by all of its support elements.

What Customers Think of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Bear Cub Earned Best Twin Mattress for Young Side Sleepers

The Bear Cub is aptly named for the little ones in our lives. This hybrid mattress’s medium-firm feel promotes crucial spinal alignment as your child grows, but also has layers of foam for pressure relief at the surface. Thus, it should be a good match for kids who sleep on their sides. Bear also asserts that this mattress is plenty bouncy—perfect for jumping on the bed.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • Toddlers, kids, and teens of average height – The Bear Cub is intended for kids, but it can feel cozy to a wide range of ages. Because it’s not available in a twin XL size, though, we wouldn’t recommend it for teens who are quite tall or plus-sized.

Our Take: The Bear Cub should live up to its cuddly name, with soft foams layered atop its sturdy coil unit. The result is a bouncy, comfy bed that provides a soothing night’s sleep if your child prefers to lie on their side.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Comes in fun colors – The Bear Cub has two colors available for its border fabric: Salmon and Arctic Blue. Kids can pick which one they’d like and feel involved in the process of selecting their new bed.
  • Strong edges – The Bear Cub’s edges are super solid, so sitting or laying near the perimeter shouldn’t cause too much sagging.

Cons

  • Weight limit – The Bear Cub can accommodate up to 150 pounds, which can be a detriment to larger kids (or adults looking to take a quick nap).
  • No twin XL – Some might appreciate the option of a twin XL for taller kids, but the Bear Cub only comes in twin or full sizes. If you’re looking for a true twin mattress though, you’re covered!

What Customers Think of the Bear Cub

On Bear’s website, the Bear Cub has an average score of about 4.2 out of 5 stars. Although its hybrid construction may make it feel a bit too firm for lightweight kids, many parents comment that it’s comfortable and supportive—enough for them to nap on it, too.

Why the Emma Original Earned Best Memory Foam Twin Mattress

With no springs to speak of, how can a memory foam twin mattress stand out in the crowd? The Emma Original answers this question with three specialized foam layers, including a base that’s divided into zones to give different levels of pushback.

Even though these are new takes on old foams, the bed itself shouldn’t be a budget-breaker. Emma keeps its prices relatively affordable, and this model is its most popular mattress. It’s a soft, all-purpose option for anyone who wants their twin bed to have a cradling feel.

Who Should Sleep On It?

Emma Mattress Construction
  • Lightweight to average-sized adults – This mattress has a lovely, plush feel that’s perfect for adults who like a softer twin bed. But heavier folks won’t find enough support in this model, and it lacks the firmness that young children need.
  • Side and back sleepers – These sleeping positions are a good match for the Original’s all-foam profile. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, will need more lift and firmness than it can provide.

Our Take: Some foam beds rely on simplicity and a thin design to keep their cost low. But the Emma Original balances affordability with some impressive proprietary foams, and we love to see zoning in a non-spring layer.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Takes the pressure off – This is a pretty soft mattress overall, and the three foam layers excel at relieving pressure from the body. Side sleepers should appreciate the swaddled feeling around their shoulders and hips.
  • Won’t strain your wallet – A twin-size memory foam mattress shouldn’t be as much of an investment as a larger, more complex model, and Emma has particularly attractive prices.

Cons

  • Not supportive enough for plus-size folks – Even though it’s 10 inches high, this bed probably won’t do a good enough job of supporting larger bodies. If you’re plus-size, consider a hybrid model instead.
  • Soft rather than lifting – If you want to feel boosted up by your mattress, this one won’t be a good fit. At a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, it feels soft and cradling rather than elevating. I wouldn’t recommend it to stomach sleepers.

What Customers Think of the Emma Original

On the Emma website, reviews of their original mattress put it at 4.7 out of 5 stars. One negative aspect of the Emma Original mattress, according to some customers, is its softer firmness level, while a positive aspect is its excellent motion isolation.

Why the Nolah Nurture Earned Best Cooling Twin Mattress for Kids

A mattress doesn’t have to be huge to pack a lot of cooling elements into its construction. The twin-sized Nolah Nurture helps to regulate temperature at almost every layer, thanks to its eco-friendly materials. How does it keep kids cool? Easy: airflow around its coils alongside breathable wool and cotton all work together to prevent sweaty nights.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • 3- to 15-year-olds: Nolah specifies that toddlers, kids, and preteens alike should enjoy this bed. Use the firmer side for the toddler years, and the softer side when your child is old enough to want added softness (usually around age 8 or so).

Our Take: The Nolah Nurture should work well for children who run hot at night. Its emphasis on natural, hypoallergenic materials may also appeal to eco-friendly shoppers—both the cotton and the wool in this bed are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Protection plan – For just 99 cents, Nolah offers a 10-year protection plan that covers a variety of accidents—everything from spills to rips and tears.
  • Dual firmness – The Nolah Nurture is yet another bed that has two firmnesses and a flippable construction. There’s a firm side for younger children and a softer side for older kids.

Cons

  • Not for teenagers – Some beds made for kids can go a long way when it comes to longevity, but unfortunately, the Nolah Nurture is geared towards younger children. Your child will likely grow out of it by the time they turn 13.
  • Lacks edge support – According to customer reviews, the Nolah Nurture’s perimeter doesn’t hold up that well under weight. This could be an issue for kids who sit or lay near the edges of the bed often.

What Customers Think of the Nolah Nurture

On Nolah’s website, a star review is not listed for the Nolah Nurture. While some customers have expressed concerns about its edge support, many customers appreciate the Nolah Nurture mattress for its excellent motion isolation and breathable design.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential Earned Best Cheap Twin Mattress

The Brooklyn Essential is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s most affordable twin mattresses. When sales are running, you can snag this bed for around $400 or less—an awesome price for a hybrid. Although it doesn’t have many fancy extra features, it’s a reliable, durable option with many components that were manufactured in-house by the brand.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • School-aged kids, teens, and adults – This hybrid was built for sleepers of nearly all ages (although it should not be used for babies), and is an especially good fit for guest rooms.
  • Back and combo sleepers – This twin bed has a middle-of-the-road firmness, which is a good sweet spot for people who move around while they snooze. It will likely feel a bit too soft for dedicated stomach sleepers and too hard for side sleepers, but back sleepers should get the right amount of spinal alignment from its design.

Our Take: Sometimes, you just want a mattress that covers the bases and covers them well, no bells and whistles necessary. The Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential was named for its ability to do just that. It has a medium-firm feel and a hybrid design that should keep you feeling lifted, not sunken.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Wallet-friendly price – By making many of its components in-house, delivering straight from their factories, and sticking to the fundamental features for comfort, Brooklyn Bedding keeps the price of this mattress low.
  • Hybrid support – Most twin mattresses in this price range will be all-foam, but this one is a hybrid, meaning you’ll get added support and longevity from the steel coils.

Cons

  • Simple construction – This isn’t the bed for people who want to brag about their mattress’s list of features. It has everything you need, but no fancy bonuses to its design.
  • Not super plush – Because it consists of a coil unit topped by two comfort layers, this mattress probably won’t feel incredibly soft. Instead, it should feel buoying and medium-firm.

What Customers Think of the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential

According to Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Essential mattress scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Users have noted that the Brooklyn Bedding Essential mattress offers a budget-friendly option for customers, however some have mentioned that it may not be as durable as higher-priced alternatives.

Why the Saatva Youth Earned Best Flippable Twin Mattress for Kids

The Saatva Youth is a bed once again made for the younger crowd. It’s a hybrid bed with a flippable construction to accommodate kids ages 3 to 7 on its firmer side and 8 to 12 on its softer side. Both sides should provide a balance of softness and support. As a bonus, it boasts a spill-resistant cover made of breathable, organic cotton for a soft and hypoallergenic sleep surface.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • Toddlers and young children (ages 3-7) The firmer side of the Saatva Youth is intended for toddlers and has a zoned foam support layer at the top.
  • Children and preteens (ages 8-12) The softer side of this mattress has a contouring foam meant for older kids, up until they become teenagers.

Our Take: Saatva is known for its high-quality luxury beds, so it’s no surprise that their mattress for kids isn’t lacking in upgrades. The Saatva Youth’s flippable construction and spill-proof organic cotton covers should make for a fancy, long-lasting twin mattress that’s sure to impress your kid.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Super bouncy – The coil unit of the Saatva Youth gives the bed plenty of bounce. This should work well for kids who are combination or restless sleepers.
  • Lasting investment – The Saatva Youth is built to last your child many years. You can rest easy knowing the bed won’t sag or droop with prolonged use.

Cons

  • Not a budget option – Saatva specializes in luxury mattresses, so you’ll definitely be getting the best bang for your buck—but it’s a lot of bucks for some. A twin costs $795 before sales.
  • Not for adults – This is another kids’ mattress, and sometimes adults may be able to get away with a quick nap on their child’s bed, but we don’t recommend any long-term use for the Saatva Youth. It’s designed to support sleepers up until the age of about 13.

What Customers Think of the Saatva

On the Saatva website, this mattress is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars. Some customers specifically praised the delivery process and the brand’s customer service. Overall, reviews for this bed are positive.

Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Firm Twin Mattress

Plank Mattress Construction
The inside of the Plank Firm

If you’re searching for a supportive and firm twin mattress, it can be difficult to find one that isn’t too thin, too saggy, or meant for children. But the Plank Firm rises above the norm—it’s an all-foam, exceptionally firm bed with a weight limit of 950 pounds.

Furthermore, it’s flippable! That means you can choose between a firm side and an extra-firm side, depending on your nightly needs. Just be aware that the Plank really does feel like its namesake, and isn’t meant for people who love a pillowy surface.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • Adults The Plank Firm was designed for adults first and foremost.
  • Back and stomach sleepers – Side sleepers should steer clear of this extra-firm mattress. Back and stomach sleepers, however, should appreciate how well it promotes spinal alignment.

Our Take: “Changing your comfort setting is as easy as flipping over your mattress … Either way, you’re getting a firm, flat sleep experience designed to enhance your sleep health.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros: What I Liked

  • Firm and flexible – Because of its flippable construction, the Plank Firm can accommodate sleepers who like an especially firm sleep surface as well as those who need an extremely firm one.
  • Supportive enough for back and stomach sleepers – The lift and spinal alignment you get from the Plank Firm should be well-suited to both back and stomach sleeping. You likely won’t feel any troublesome sinking around your hips or lumbar spine.

Cons

  • It’s not soft – The Plank Firm is not for side sleepers who need a lot of cushion—or for anyone who wants cushion from their bed, really.
  • It won’t do a lot of cooling – You can add a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover to your Plank Firm, but it will cost you some extra money. Otherwise, the foam layers aren’t loaded with temperature-regulating ingredients.

What Customers Think of the Plank Firm

On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Why the Birch Kids Natural Earned Best Organic Twin Mattress

The Birch Kids Natural is a latex hybrid mattress with a long list of certifications regarding the quality of its materials. The brand can even draw a clear line from the wool inside the bed back to the specific farm that supplied the textile.

The combination of organic cotton, organic wool, Talalay latex, and springs offers a bouncy and breathable surface that should help keep young sleepers from overheating and allow for ease of movement.

Who Should Sleep On It?

  • Young kids (ages 3-7) Toddlers and younger children benefit from a firmer latex layer on one side of this twin bed.
  • School-aged children (ages 8-12) On the other side, a softer latex layer adds plushness for this older age group.

Our Take: The Birch Kids Natural is your best bet if you’re seeking a “natural” twin bed for your child. Not only is it hypoallergenic and environmentally (and ethically) friendly, it’s got two sides, should keep cool, and has plenty of bounce for playtime.

Pros: What I Liked

  • Plenty of bounce – Coils and latex in the Birch Kids make for a super responsive surface. This should benefit kids that toss and turn, who should be able to move around and reposition without feeling “stuck” in the mattress.
  • Hypoallergenic – The use of organic cotton and wool, alongside natural latex, all contribute to the bed’s hypoallergenic certification. This should be great if your kid is suffering from any allergies—no sniffling while they sleep.

Cons

  • Can have an odor – Customers notice that Birch products tend to have an earthy smell. This can be better than the sometimes chemical smell produced by synthetic foams, but it’s worth considering if your child is especially sensitive to smells.
  • Not cheap – All-natural products tend to have a higher price due to their quality of materials, and that’s the case for the Birch Kids. It may be difficult to justify a nearly $1,000 price point for a twin-size bed, but if you’re looking for an eco-conscious kids’ bed, we think it’s worth the money.

What Customers Think of the Birch Kids Natural

On the Birch website by Helix, reviews are aggregated for all their products but relatively get about 4.6 out of 5 stars. One potential negative aspect of the Birch Kids Natural mattress, as noted by some customers, is its relatively high price point, while a pro highlighted by customers is its durable construction and eco-friendly materials.

Twin-Size Mattress Specs

Illustrated image of Twin size bed dimensions in inches

A twin-size mattress is 75 inches long and 38 inches wide. That’s typically enough space to accommodate one average-sized adult, teenager, or child.

What’s the Difference Between a Twin and a Twin XL?

The difference between a twin and a twin XL mattress is simple: the twin XL is 5 inches longer (but it has the same 38-inch width).

twin size compared to twin xl size

Twin XL mattresses are great for taller sleepers, as the extra five inches provide a bit more leg room. Teenagers or college students who need more room to stretch out but don’t have the bedroom space for a full- or queen-size mattress may want to buy a twin XL. Just be sure that if you do choose this longer twin model, you buy twin XL sheets and bedding to match!

What’s the Difference Between a Twin and a Single Bed?

There’s no difference between a twin bed and a single bed. They’re two names for the same mattress size. Most people use the word “twin” to describe this size nowadays.

Other Mattress Sizes

How To Find the Best Twin Mattress for You: Key Considerations

The best twin mattresses will be small but mighty. Because they’re made to save space and often serve as a transitional or temporary bed, they may not be as durable as larger beds. However, a quality twin should still offer you reliable support and comfort.

When shopping for a twin bed, you’ll want to keep a few key factors in mind.

Who’s Sleeping on the Bed?

Twin mattresses are often designed for a specific group or age range. You can narrow your search by only looking at twin beds that meet your (or your child’s) needs.

Age

Twin beds can work for people of all ages. However, different stages of life demand different qualities in a mattress.

  • Ages 3-7: When a child switches from a crib mattress to a “big kid” bed, they still need a higher degree of support and firmness than an adult sleeper. Twin beds for this age group are therefore quite firm.
  • Ages 8-12: At this age, kids might want a little more cushion from their twin bed. A sturdy support system is still a must as their bodies grow, but the comfort layers above it can be softer.
  • Teens: Teenagers are old enough to have developed a good sense of their primary sleeping position(s) and comfort preferences. They can choose from the same variety of twin beds as adults. However, if they’re a college student or growing quite fast, they may benefit from a budget-friendly twin bed that won’t be used for more than a few years.
  • Adults: A twin mattress for an adult should have greater durability and more advanced support features than one for a kid, as they’re usually meant to last longer. They can also range in feel from very soft to very firm, depending on the sleeper’s tastes.

Shopping for your children? Browse the best mattresses for kids or the best beds for teenagers.

Weight and Body Type

Your weight and frame greatly influence how a twin mattress will feel when you lie on it. Generally speaking, heavy people will prefer firmer twin mattresses, while those weighing under 130 pounds should get a softer bed.

Plus-size sleepers should also ensure that they’re buying a twin with enough layers and support features to prevent sagging and discomfort.

Support

You’ll want to ensure that your twin bed has reliable and sturdy support features, whether they’re foam- or spring-based. Low-quality twin beds will struggle to elevate your body and sag over time.

How Do I Know If a Twin Bed Has Enough Support?

If you aren’t sure whether a twin mattress has the kind of support you need, I recommend testing the bed in your home for several nights. Reputable mattress companies allow you to do this as part of a “sleep trial” policy. If the bed disappoints you, as long as you’re still within the trial window, you can typically return it and get a refund.

Firmness

Twin-size beds for adults can run the gamut in terms of feel. Don’t compromise on your preferred firmness just because a twin bed might not be in your life for very long!

Take a closer look at the mattress construction and layers of the WInkbed mattress
Exploring the top layers of the WinkBed and assessing their firmness
  • Softer twin beds are best for side sleepers and those who weigh under 130 pounds.
  • A medium firmness is best for back sleepers, although plus-size back sleepers should lean towards a firmer twin bed that provides more support.
  • Stomach sleepers almost always prefer firm mattresses for how well they support the hips.

Edge Support

Lead Tester Julia Forbes testing the DreamCloud premier in various sleeping positions
Testing the edge support on a DreamCloud mattress

Edge support is crucial for smaller bed sizes like the twin, because no matter where you are on the mattress, you’re near an edge.

Certain twin beds will have better edge support than others. Hybrids, for example, tend to have sturdier edges due to reinforced springs along the sides. However, foam beds can also have edge support features (such as a denser foam frame around the perimeter).

Thickness

Because of their relatively small size, twin mattresses are often assumed to be thin and flimsy. But a good twin bed will be just as thick as a larger one—anywhere from 8 to 14+ inches—to accommodate layers for both comfort and support.

If you’re looking for a twin mattress that you won’t use for very long, then a thinner profile isn’t as big of an issue. You may also need to limit the thickness of the mattress if you plan on using it as a bunk bed. But in general, the best twin beds will be no less than 6 inches thick, and probably much thicker.

Mattress Type

There are four main types of mattresses available today, and you can order any of them in a twin size.

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials
  • Innerspring: Has steel coils as its primary support unit and a thin comfort layer on top.
  • Hybrid: Has an innerspring support system and multiple comfort layers stacked above it.
  • Foam: Has support and comfort layers made entirely of foam.
  • Latex: Has at least one support or comfort layer made from latex foam. May be a hybrid or all-foam bed.

Available Space

Twin mattresses are great for conserving space in a room. If you have a small bedroom, guest room, or dorm room, a twin bed may be the perfect fit. They’re also light enough to work well with a Murphy bed, if you want to save even more space.

But twin beds can work in larger rooms, too, and can even allow a space to become dual-purpose. For example, you might put a twin bed in an office so that it can transform into a guest room at a moment’s notice.

Budget

Thankfully, twin mattresses are some of the most affordable, given their compact size and portability. You should be able to find a very good twin mattress for less than $1,000, and perhaps even for less than $500, depending on sales.

Keep in mind that cheaper twin beds tend to be thinner and have less layers. Even if you’ll only be sleeping on a twin for a limited amount of time, don’t settle for an uncomfortable bed or mysterious, potentially unsafe materials.

Twin Mattress FAQs

Can two adults sleep in a twin bed?

Generally, no. Two petite adults may be able to share a twin bed, but they won’t be very comfortable. Twin beds were made for a single sleeper, so they don’t have enough room to accommodate two people.

How long is a twin bed?

A twin bed is 75 inches long. If you need even more room to stretch out lengthwise, consider a twin XL, which is 80 inches long.

How wide is a twin bed?

A twin bed is 38 inches wide. It’s the narrowest standard mattress size, but it’s usually wide enough for one adult to sleep comfortably.

What is the average cost of a twin bed?

The average cost of a quality twin bed is about $800. That price doesn’t account for sales or discounts, however. Twin beds for children will also typically cost less than twin beds for adults.

Do two twin beds make a king?

No, pushing two twin beds together will not give you the same dimensions as a king-size bed.

A king-size mattress is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, and two twin-size mattresses side-by-side will measure 76 inches wide by 75 inches long. So, you’ll have the same amount of width as a king bed, but not quite as much length. (Two twin XL mattresses pushed together, however, would give you the same dimensions as a king.)

If you’re looking for lots of room to spread out without combining beds, browse our list of the best king mattresses.
