Why the Nectar Earned Best Mattress for Fibromyalgia Overall

Quality memory foam can do wonders for fibromyalgia symptoms, as it cradles sensitive joints and prevents too much motion transfer across the bed. The Nectar is an all-foam mattress that capitalizes on the benefits of this cozy material—I felt delightfully cushioned by the foam during testing.

What’s more, its straightforward design comes at a very affordable price, with impressive policies that make returns easy. Because the signs of fibromyalgia can vary so much from person to person, there’s no guarantee that a given bed will provide relief. Nectar’s 365-night sleep trial gives you a full year to decide if it’s the right mattress for you.

For all the reasons above—its pressure-relieving abilities, its low cost, and the flexibility of its policies—I’ve awarded the Nectar the top spot on this list.

What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?

The Nectar is a foot tall and has three inner foam layers protected by a temperature-regulating cover. Its first foam layer is 2 inches thick and made of gel memory foam that molds to your silhouette. The second is a 3-inch layer of more responsive and supportive foam. Finally, a 7-inch layer of ActiveSupport base foam encourages body alignment and stability.

testing the layers and construction of the nectar mattress
Look inside at the construction of the Nectar mattress

All of the foams inside the Nectar are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they’ve been declared free of certain harmful substances that can be found in lower-quality foams.

My Take: If you’re a lightweight or non-plus-sized sleeper, the Nectar is comfortable and cushy enough to hug your body, but still keep integral areas (namely the lumbar zone) boosted.

What I Liked

  • Low motion transfer – Memory foam absorbs movement easily, and I noticed very little motion transfer while testing the Nectar. This is one arena in which all-foam beds have the edge over hybrids.
  • Price and policies – The Nectar is notably affordable when compared to many other mattresses you can order online. The brand also stands behind the quality of this bed by offering a 365-night sleep trial and a Forever Warranty that lasts for as long as you own the mattress.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not enough support for stomach sleepers – If you sleep exclusively on your stomach, the Nectar may not have a robust enough support system for your needs. I noticed some concerning sinkage around my middle when I tried this position.
  • Less optimal cooling – Although the Nectar includes a gel foam layer and heat-diverting fabric in its cover, it may not offer the same level of cooling as beds equipped with innerspring systems.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar Mattress

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Helix Dawn Earned Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers with Fibromyalgia

Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress with enough support to keep their hips and midsections lifted. Otherwise, too much sinking around these areas can result in a lack of spinal alignment and even back pain.

But if you’re a stomach sleeper with fibromyalgia, you may not want to go extremely firm with your bed, lest you aggravate your symptoms. The Helix Dawn represents a good compromise between pleasant-feeling foams and a sturdy, supportive construction.

What’s the Helix Dawn Made Of?

Helix Dawn Mattress Construction

The Helix Dawn is 11.5 inches tall with five layers, including its soft cover.

Underneath is a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, a proprietary material that emulates the springiness of latex foam. It leads into two layers of Helix Responsive Foam: one that specializes in pressure relief, and one that’s a bit firmer for full-body support.

The Dawn’s spring unit has individually wrapped coils that have been reinforced on the long sides of the bed. They sit on top of a base of DuraDense foam.

Our Take: This is a firm bed that should keep stomach sleepers buoyed, but it’s not so unyielding as to be uncomfortable. Back sleepers may enjoy it too!

What We Liked

  • Proprietary foams – The Dawn combines two kinds of branded foams that Helix has arranged in layers meant to prop up stomach and back sleepers. The first comfort layer mimics the properties of latex foam without being as expensive.
  • American-made – Helix mattresses are hand-assembled in the United States, ensuring stringent quality control standards.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too hard for side sleepers – Side sleepers, especially those with fibromyalgia, are apt to feel too much pressure around their shoulders and hips on this bed.
  • Additional cost for cooling cover – You’ll need to shell out some extra cash to outfit your Helix Dawn mattress with a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover. This cover features fibers that can absorb and redirect heat for easier rest.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Dawn

The Helix Dawn has an average of 4.4 out of 5 stars on the Helix website. Negative reviews say that the mattress seems to get softer over time, but the majority positive reviews claim the bed is comfortable and has helped with aches and pains.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Fibromyalgia

Temperature sensitivity can be a symptom of fibromyalgia, and trying to get to sleep while you’re overheated can compound the fatigue that also often comes with the condition. So if you want enough pressure relief from your bed to soothe aches and pains, finding a foam mattress that stays cool enough can be a challenge.

Enter the Nolah Signature and its proprietary AirFoam™ material. “It’s like memory foam but it has a much cooler feel,” said Emma, one of my fellow mattress testers. This bed has multiple cooling strategies built into it, and should achieve a rare balance between cradling foams and temperature regulation.

What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?

The Nolah Signature is 12 inches high and has five layers. It begins with an organic cotton cover that protects the first comfort layer: 2.5 inches of plush AirFoam™. Nolah attests that this proprietary foam is much better at cooling and pressure relief than traditional memory foam.

It’s followed by a 1.5-inch layer of responsive foam, which boasts a breathable structure for even more cooling.

Taking a look at the Nolah Evolution mattress construction
The Nolah uses foam for its top layer for extra cooling

Next is another layer of AirFoam™ with a firmer feel, and finally, a 7-inch foundational layer of high-density foam.

Our Take: Nolah’s mattresses tend to feel cloud-like and luxurious. The Signature appealed most to our testers who liked softer beds, and they couldn’t stop praising its pressure-relieving powers.

What We Liked

  • Oodles of pressure relief – “It felt like a cloud; it’s like a dream,” said Mark, one of our testers. Liz, a tester who experiences chronic joint pain, said that the Signature is “perfect for sleeping on your side.”
  • Minimal motion transfer – According to our tester Emma, the Signature mattress significantly reduces motion transfer, effectively absorbing both minor and significant movements.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Plus-sized sleepers will want more support – The foam design of the Signature feels plush and heavenly to some, but it won’t have the lift that larger bodies require. “It didn’t have as much support in it as I [needed], and I found that I sunk in a bit more when I was sleeping on my back and my side,” said Sean.
  • Edges dip a bit – The Nolah Signature’s edge support isn’t stellar. “When laying on the edge, it’s great. But you’ll see that there’s a bit more buckling when you sit on the edge,” Emma reported.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature

The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the Zenhaven Earned Best Mattress for Combination Sleepers with Fibromyalgia

For combination sleepers with fibromyalgia, the most important trait in a mattress (other than overall comfort) is probably responsiveness. This demographic needs a springy surface that will help them reposition during the night without exacerbating any pain.

Saatva’s Zenhaven mattress is built for such buoyancy: it features a flippable design with latex foam layers. Latex is an especially responsive material that pairs the pressure-relieving qualities of other foams with natural breathability, hypoallergenic qualities, and a distinctive bouncy feel.

What’s the Zenhaven Made Of?

The Zenhaven is 10 inches high and has a two-sided, flippable design. One side is labeled “Luxury Plush,” while the other is “Gentle Firm.”

The covers on each side are made of organic cotton and quilted to be slightly firmer under the lumbar spine. Underneath is a layer of organic New Zealand wool, which serves as a natural fire retardant.

Next is a layer of latex foam that’s zoned into five areas for specialized pressure relief under different body parts. It’s also been punched with airflow channels for extra cooling.

The core of the mattress is also made of a firmer latex for support and longevity.

Our Take: Saatva is known for its premium and eco-friendly materials, and the Zenhaven showcases them in a flippable design for extra versatility. This bed is a lovely choice for latex lovers and anyone who wants to shop green.

What We Liked

  • Organic and natural components – Certified organic wool, organic cotton, and natural latex make this mattress an earth-friendly and allergen-resistant place to sleep.
  • Customizable firmness – Combination sleepers prize adaptability in their mattresses, and the Zenhaven is more customizable than most. Its two sides allow you to experiment with two very different firmness levels, and its latex foam combines give with enough responsiveness to suit most sleeping positions.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Latex can be polarizing – Not everyone digs the springy sensation of lying on latex foam. It’s soft, but it’s also bouncy, and it feels a bit different from more traditional mattress materials.
  • Eco-friendly materials come at a cost – The Zenhaven is pricier than many of the other beds on this list. To get all those painstakingly sourced materials and two usable sides, expect to spend around $3,300 for a queen unless a sale is active.

Customer Reviews of the Zenhaven mattress

On the Saatva website, this mattress scored a 4.9 out of 5 stars, from 315 reviews. Customers appreciate the Saatva Zenhaven mattress for its natural latex construction and durability, but some have mentioned that its price point may be higher than other latex mattresses on the market.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Back Sleepers with Fibromyalgia

Back sleepers with fibromyalgia likely want a mattress that’s firm enough to adequately align their spine, but cushiony enough to help with soreness, fatigue, and overheating.

The Bear Star Hybrid ranks at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale (with 10 being hard as a rock), so it’s medium-firm but not too floor-like. Its first layer of gel foam assists with soothing pressure relief and combines forces with a specialized cover to keep the bed cool.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Star Hybrid is 13 inches high and has five total layers.

Its cover stays pleasantly chilled thanks to HydroCool® technology, and it also has Celliant® fibers woven into its design. Celliant® is a performance textile that may be able to aid muscle recovery after exercise.

The fibers purportedly convert body heat to infrared energy, which can boost bloodflow in the areas of the body that are in contact with the bed.

Take a closer look at the Bear Star Hybrid mattress construction
The Bear Star Hybrid is built of 5 different layers

Next is a layer of Serene Gel Foam that conforms to your silhouette and relieves pressure. It’s followed by a bouncier foam that enables easy movement throughout the night, and then by the bed’s coil unit. The springs are pocketed and reinforced along the edges. At the very bottom of the mattress sits a base layer of high-density foam.

Our Take: “The Bear Star mattress has a unique five-layer design that provides exceptional pressure relief and support for all sleeping positions.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • A standout cover – Stuart called the Bear Star Hybrid’s cover “refreshing” and noted that it felt cool when he touched it. The Celliant® fibers inside it give it an enticing edge that most other mattresses can’t claim.
  • Firm but welcoming – This is a slightly firm bed that back sleepers should enjoy, but its upper foam layers don’t feel too tough. Overall, it strikes a nice balance between supportive and cozy.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too firm for side sleepers – Side sleepers and very petite people may think this bed feels a bit too bracing. They’ll want a more pillowy surface for their pressure points.
  • Edge support isn’t incredible – During testing, Stuart noted that the Bear Star Hybrid’s edge support wasn’t anything to write home about. If you tend to sleep on the outer sides of your bed, you may want a mattress with more reinforcement there.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Fibromyalgia

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness options. If you’re a side sleeper with fibromyalgia, you’ll most likely find the Plush Soft model to be the most comfortable, as it provides pillowy pressure relief around the hips and shoulders.

Beneath that lovely pillow top, however, there’s support aplenty. The Saatva Classic has two innerspring units and a host of lumbar-focused features that help to keep your body well-aligned.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic can be ordered in one of two heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. Its firmness variations are Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.

At the surface is a 3-inch Euro top encased in an organic cotton cover. The Eurotop’s soft foam gives you a pressure-relieving introduction to the bed, though the quilting in the middle of it is a tad firmer for lumbar support.

Underneath is a strip of memory foam positioned in the middle third of the bed, also intended to support the lower back.

It’s followed by the first coil unit: a layer of individually wrapped springs that are zoned to be stronger in the lumbar region. They’re assisted by a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire that further braces the area.

The second coil unit features thicker, interconnected springs that give the mattress airflow as well as a sturdy base.

The above layers are surrounded by a border of dense foam for robust edge support.

My Take: What sets this mattress apart from others is the use of two types of coils: individually wrapped ones and an old-school unit. The individually wrapped layer contours around your body to help with customized pressure relief, and the bottom coils are all about steadfast support.

What I Liked

  • A lovely lumbar boost – My midsection felt amazingly lifted on the Saatva Classic, with no risk of sinking out of alignment. All of those lumbar-specific elements really do make a difference.
  • So much customization – By enabling you to choose your desired height and firmness level, this bed is essentially personalized to your sleeping preferences. Even within a given firmness, there’s so much versatility in this bed, and it can accommodate almost any sleeping position. I characterize it as one of the true jacks-of-all-trades in the mattress world.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Moderate cooling effect – While the Saatva Classic maintains a comfortable temperature, it does not feature advanced cooling technologies for active cooling. During my testing, the temperature remained stable rather than noticeably decreasing.
  • Increased motion transfer – The dual innerspring layers of the Saatva Classic result in a noticeable bounce, leading to more significant motion transfer. Restless sleepers might disturb their partners due to this characteristic.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Layla Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Couples with Fibromyalgia

The Layla Hybrid has a unique flippable design with a “soft” and “firm” side. Simply turn the mattress over if you’d like to experience a different feel. This customizability is a boon for people with fibromyalgia, as they might want to change up the firmness of the mattress as their symptoms fluctuate.

My fellow reviewers were charmed by the flippable aspect, and they also recommended the bed for partners with different primary sleep positions or comfort preferences. As Emma noted: “Its superior motion control and edge support make this bed a must-have for couples.”

What’s the Layla Hybrid Made Of?

The Layla Hybrid mattress is 13 inches tall and has seven total layers, including its top and bottom covers.

Take a closer look at the Layla Hybrid construction

Both covers are soft and outfitted with handles to make flipping the bed easy. Underneath each one is a layer of copper-gel memory foam: a thicker, plusher layer on the softer side, and a thinner, firmer layer on the other side. The copper within the foam lends it both cooling and antimicrobial properties.

Next is a layer of Max Airflow Support Foam, cut with channels to promote temperature regulation. It’s also zoned to encourage the right amount of pressure relief and pushback for different areas of the body.

In the middle of the mattress is the coil system, with individually wrapped springs and a double row of thicker, stronger coils along the edges.

Our Take: “Testing out the softer side, you should feel the plush memory layers provide a deep hug. Flipping it over, the firmer side should provide a gentle cradle, leaving you feeling more on top of the mattress.” – Natalie, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Amazing motion isolation – Even though this bed’s construction includes a coil core, the foam layers on either side prevent movement from traveling. “The Layla Hybrid mattress is a master of motion control, allowing you and your partner an undisturbed night’s sleep,” said Emma.
  • Flexible firmness – “It feels as if every kind of sleeper was kept at the forefront of the manufacturer’s mind when constructing this bed,” Emma remarked. Because you can flip it to access a different firmness, most sleepers should be satisfied with one or both of its respective feels.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Considerable weight – Flipping the Layla Hybrid, due to its weight, may require assistance. Our testers suggest having two people on hand to help during the flipping process.
  • Medium-firm feel – For those seeking an exceptionally firm mattress, the Layla Hybrid’s firmer side may not meet expectations, offering a medium-firm feel instead of a very firm experience. Mark, an exclusive side sleeper, said both sides were plush enough to sleep comfortably.

Customer Reviews of the Layla Hybrid

According to the Layla site, the Layla Hybrid has an overall 4.5 out of 5 stars. While customers appreciate the Layla Hybrid mattress for its reversible design offering two firmness options, some have found it to be heavier and more challenging to rotate due to its substantial build.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential Earned Best Cheap Mattress for Fibromyalgia

Finding a bed that helps to offset your fibromyalgia symptoms can be difficult if you’re also on a budget. You don’t want your mattress to be low-quality, but you can’t afford to drop more than $1,000. In this scenario, I recommend giving the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential a look.

Many of the components in this bed are built in-house at Brooklyn Bedding factories, and it has a simple hybrid design that balances comfy give with integral support. It’s a medium-firm bed, so it’s a better fit for those whose fibromyalgia flare-ups don’t need a ton of pressure relief.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential Made Of?

This bed is 10 inches high and has four total layers. The first is a 1.5-inch quilted comfort layer of high-density foam. It’s on top of a 0.75-inch layer of transition foam, which brings a little bit of bounce to the upper layer’s cushion.

Together, these two foam layers protect your body from feeling the 8-inch coil unit beneath. These AscensionX® springs are individually wrapped and more tightly wound around the sides of the bed for edge support.

Finally, a 0.25-inch base of foam bolsters the layers above.

Our Take: Affordable and reliable hybrid beds are hard to find. This one keeps its design simple so that its cost can stay low, but its combination of comfort foams and pocketed springs should prove both comfortable and supportive.

What We Liked

  • Affordability – A queen-size version of this bed can be ordered for less than $1,000, and sometimes much less when sales are running.
  • House-made materials – Brooklyn Bedding keeps a keen eye on the quality of its materials, and makes many of them in-house. Their coils, for example, are rolled onsite in their Arizona factory.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Simplistic design – The Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Essential maintains a straightforward hybrid design, focusing on functionality without specialized cooling features or luxury add-ons.
  • Moderate softness and pressure relief – The bed’s design, incorporating two foam layers atop its coil unit, offers a level of comfort and pressure relief that may not satisfy those seeking deep sinkage.

Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Essential

According to Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Essential mattress scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Users have noted that the Brooklyn Bedding Essential mattress offers a budget-friendly option for customers, however some have mentioned that it may not be as durable as higher-priced alternatives.

Why the Loom & Leaf Earned Best Mattress for Back Pain with Fibromyalgia

Saatva is best known for its innerspring mattresses, but the brand’s take on a memory foam bed is a natural fit for people with fibromyalgia and back pain.

Despite its all-foam construction, it won’t trap you in a deep hug. Instead, it cradles you gently on its surface, with enough gentleness to mitigate fibromyalgia-related aches and enough support to keep your body aligned. Its lumbar-targeting components even won it a seal of approval from the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations.

What’s the Loom & Leaf Mattress Made Of?

The Loom & Leaf is 12 inches tall and has six layers. You can order it as a “Relaxed Firm” or “Firm” bed.

The cover is made of organic cotton and protected by a plant-derived antimicrobial treatment. It’s quilted in such a way that it firms up under the lumbar spine for extra support.

Next is a “crown” or strip of memory foam, also located solely under the lumbar area. This foam is gel-infused for cooling and gives the lower back added lift. The crown is followed by a 2-inch layer of perforated gel-infused memory foam that simultaneously molds to your silhouette and allows for cooling airflow.

Next is the 2.5-inch memory foam core. The core enhances the pressure relief you’ll feel from the bed while also lending support to the body. Beneath it is a 2-inch layer of transitional foam, the firmness of which varies depending on the model you choose.

Finally, a 5.5-inch layer of base foam forms the foundation of the mattress.

Our Take: “Overall, Loom & Leaf is soft and luxurious, but doesn’t sacrifice any support. If you’re looking for a memory foam bed that keeps you more cradled to the surface, you should love this brand.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Unique feel with a familiar material – Memory foam mattresses are nothing new, but Stuart felt like this model avoided the trapping, sinking feel you can get with other all-foam beds. The upper layers “cradle your body in the foam, kind of creating a hammock that should keep you gently cradled closer to the surface,” he said.
  • Foam lovers shouldn’t get too hot – “This bed is great for people who sleep hot,” Stuart remarked. Its gel-infused and perforated foam layers, as well as its lack of sinkage, should help a lot with temperature regulation.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Premium pricing – As a luxury memory foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf comes at a higher price point compared to standard all-foam beds, reflecting its premium materials and construction.
  • Might lack support for some sleepers – Stuart is a relatively lightweight sleeper, and though he felt comfortable in all positions on this bed, he recommended that heavier folks and devoted stomach sleepers look at firmer options.

Why the TEMPUR-Cloud® Earned Best Mattress for Arthritis and Fibromyalgia

The TEMPUR-Cloud® mattress includes Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur® material, their proprietary memory foam.

Memory foam is known for its ability to provide fantastic pressure relief, and that’s key when you’re struggling with both fibromyalgia and arthritis. While testing this mattress, I experienced palpable pressure relief around my weight-bearing areas, but also noted that my spine stayed well-aligned.

What’s the TEMPUR-Cloud® Made Of?

The TEMPUR-Cloud® features a 10-inch profile that begins with a 360° stretch cover. Below the cover is a unit of the brand’s specialized Tempur® material for cushioning and softness.

This is followed by an additional layer of Tempur® foam that serves as a transitional layer before the firm foam at the base of the mattress.

TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Construction
Julia showing the construction of the Tempur Cloud

My Take: The cushioning on this bed felt both supportive and welcoming. There was even-keeled pushback from the base, so I wasn’t worried about my alignment, but I also felt nice pressure relief under the heaviest parts of my body.

What I Liked

  • Solid support – There’s less sink to this mattress than in other Tempur-Pedic models, and I valued the alignment it gave my spine. As a stomach sleeper, I’m always mindful of how low my body is dipping.
  • Better responsiveness – This mattress had quicker responsiveness than the beds in the brand’s Breeze collection. A responsive bed is helpful for changing positions more easily, and memory foam beds don’t always have this capability.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Limited cooling capabilities – Unfortunately, this Tempur-Pedic bed is not going to be suitable for people who run hot at night. It doesn’t feel cool to the touch, and I didn’t experience much cooling while lying on it.
  • Weaker edge support – Sitting on the edge of this bed made me feel like I was going to slip off if I wasn’t careful. I felt more stability while I was lying on the side, but still less than I might get from a hybrid or innerspring mattress.

What to Look for in a Mattress for Fibromyalgia

Considering that a fibromyalgia1 diagnosis is often accompanied by full-body pain, as well as sleep issues and fatigue, a mattress can be an essential tool in helping you find comfort. While your personal preferences for a mattress are a top priority, when you’re also dealing with fibromyalgia, there are certain features you should look for when shopping for a new bed.

Mattresses that provide pressure relief while supporting your spine may help alleviate some of the uncomfortable symptoms of this disease. Furthermore, it will be paramount to look for mattresses made from quality materials that can enhance your overall well-being.

Type of Mattress

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses can lack a substantial enough comfort layer to help with the discomfort caused by fibromyalgia. They offer less contouring than foam options, and their “push-back” can be quite pronounced, which may aggravate your symptoms.

If you love the bounce and feel of this mattress type, one of the best things you can do is to combine an innerspring unit with a more cushioning material, such as memory foam or latex, which is where hybrids come in handy.

Hybrid Mattresses

A hybrid mattress may help alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms. The comfort layers can provide the right amount of pressure relief to help with the pain of fibromyalgia, while the coil unit encourages proper support and alignment.

The best hybrid mattresses combine foam and springs to convey the benefits of both innerspring and foam beds while mitigating their shortcomings.

Looking at the Nectar Premier Hybrid Construction
In the lab, showing the layers of construction in a hybrid mattress

As hybrids can be constructed from a nearly limitless blend of materials, it’s important to investigate the layers of any hybrid bed you’re considering.

Memory Foam Mattresses

High-quality memory foam can be a beneficial material for offsetting fibromyalgia symptoms. It’s designed to provide comprehensive contouring, optimal support, and palpable pressure relief.

Memory foam encourages healthy spinal alignment, and many kinds are innately hypoallergenic. Couples can also enjoy the fact that this foam reliably limits motion transfer.

Memory foam mattresses are usually quite versatile — they can fit most adjustable frames and are usually easier to transport than beds that contain springs.

Related: Best Memory Foam Mattress

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are both pressure-relieving and responsive. This mix of qualities helps to prevent body aches while simultaneously keeping you from feeling “stuck” in the bed.

Latex beds are also known to be extremely durable, hypoallergenic, and better at temperature regulation than some memory foam models. However, keep in mind that some high-end latex beds — typically ones made with primarily natural or organic materials — are quite costly.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Fibromyalgia

Support

A supportive mattress is helpful in general, but it’s especially important for those with fibromyalgia. A good way to help you know that the mattress is properly supportive is if it can keep your body on a level plane. This means that one or more parts of the spine are not going to be located higher than others.

Consistent support is going to help keep your spine aligned. If your bed is sagging, this may just lead to more pain, but if your bed supports you properly, your spine should be just as it is when you stand up straight.

Sleeping Position

If you sleep on your back, a medium-firm mattress that can relieve pressure and support your spine could be optimal. Side sleeping may dissipate some of the tension that builds up in your body, but you’ll want to make sure you have a plush mattress that softly cradles around your shoulders and hips.

Although some sleepers may find some relief by sleeping on their stomachs, this can be a tricky position. If your bed is not supportive enough, your hips may sink too far down, which could leave your spine in a compromising position that may cause more pain.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

A person’s weight can alter how hard or soft a bed feels and because of this, it should be a consideration for those with fibromyalgia. It may also mean that they decide on a different kind of bed than those of similar weight who don’t have this condition. Given that many with this condition have musculoskeletal pain, a bed that comforts and contours the parts of the body that come into contact with the mattress could be helpful.

Typically, the more people weigh, the firmer their bed should be, but this may need to be tweaked some for those for whom a firm mattress may create more pain and tension.

Firmness

Mattress firmness is an important factor to consider when it comes to relieving pain. The last thing you’d want is to experience even more pain while you are sleeping on a bed that turned out to be too firm or too soft. The ideal firmness when it comes to pressure and pain relief tends to be medium to medium-firm for most, although firmness is subjective.

A general rule of thumb (though everyone should follow what works best for them individually) is that unless you are a side sleeper, you will want to check out a medium-firm mattress, though some stomach sleepers may want a firm mattress specifically. If you’re a side sleeper, however, you may want to go for something softer. These particular beds would provide your body with a chance to sink a little more in order to promote proper spinal health and alignment.

Cooling

Some people with fibromyalgia report that their symptoms are intensified by the cold2. If this is the case for you, a cooling mattress may not be necessary. In this case, you might be fine with a standard memory foam option that doesn’t come with added cooling features.

However, others who would sleep better on a cooler bed space should look at innerspring, hybrid, and latex mattresses as these are all great for cooling.

Julia Forbes testing how fast a mattress cools down
Julia testing the cooling properties of each mattress

Additionally, memory foam with infused cooling gel or other means to regulate temperature can also be an excellent option given how well this foam cradles the curves of the body.

Motion Isolation

If you’ve ever been woken by a partner’s or pet’s restlessness, you were likely sleeping on a bed with poor motion isolation. Beds that don’t keep the motion created by one co-sleeper contained to their side of the bed can be particularly problematic for those with fibromyalgia as unexpected jolts may exacerbate the pain that they may be experiencing.

Memory foam is a material that tends to respond slowly and absorb motion well, and those with fibromyalgia may want to explore this option, especially if they sleep with another.

testing motion transfer on a mattress
Julia using Dave to test the motion transfer of each bed

Sex

Women are much more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men.2 As such, much of the research about fibromyalgia and sexual intercourse has to do with women. It has been shown that women with fibromyalgia have decreased sexual desire and report pain3 associated with intimacy.

However, for those couples who are able to engage in intimacy, it can help to have a bed that can help foster easier movement and repositioning. In this case, beds that are responsive and bouncy, including innerspring, hybrid, and latex models, can be beneficial for sex.

Related: Best Mattress for Sex

Pressure Relief

A mattress that’s not right for you can hit pressure points that are already quite painful from fibromyalgia. This can make it nearly impossible to fully recharge your body and feel restored when you wake up.

If you have a quality mattress made of memory foam or latex, it should contour your body and provide you with additional support that you actually need. This is important, and it helps deliver pressure relief. Of course, other mattress types are also capable of doing so – it’s about finding your right fit for the best rest.

The thing you should avoid is getting a bed that will aggravate the pressure points because this can cause even more pain and sleepless nights.

For More Information: Best Mattresses for Pressure Relief

Edge Support

Edge support is crucial for many people, especially those who like to spread across the entire bed. Couples and single individuals who like to use the entire bed can benefit from strong edges that won’t collapse under the weight. However, not every bed has good edge support.

Mattresses with a reinforced perimeter typically do a better job supporting the edges than beds without any additional reinforcement. Hybrids and innerspring mattresses sometimes have additional higher-gauge coils in this area, helping the edges to maintain their shape. Memory foam beds may have higher-density foam along the perimeter.

Ease of Movement

People with fibromyalgia have a higher pain sensitivity4 and may find it more difficult to move around on a mattress. This is especially the case if they sleep on a bed that doesn’t fit them in terms of firmness.

A mattress that’s too soft may allow too much sinkage, making you slip inside the comfort layer. This can make it difficult to move around and get in and out of bed. For this reason, many people with fibromyalgia may prefer a medium to medium-firm bed that allows a bit of contouring for pressure relief but without trapping you inside the comfort layer.

Budget

Mattresses can be a big investment, and it is advisable to have a budget before you start shopping. This will allow you to narrow down your choices to see what’s in your price range. Those with fibromyalgia will want to look for a bed with quality materials, and while this may mean a slightly higher price point, if it can help you rest better, then it could be worth it.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

A variety of circumstances can cause fibromyalgia. These can include a car accident, psychological distress, an infection, or genetics.1 Women and those with a family history of this condition are more at risk of developing fibromyalgia.1 Additionally, having osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can increase your chances of developing fibromyalgia.1

How Can a Mattress Help with Fibromyalgia?

The pain caused by fibromyalgia can make sleep difficult. Having a mattress that provides pressure relief may be able to ease some of the discomfort caused by this condition. Additionally, finding the right mattress for your weight and sleep type can provide good support to your spine, which can also help alleviate pain.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position for Fibromyalgia?

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

Back Sleeping

When you have fibromyalgia but are a back sleeper, you can try to sleep with your knees raised. This could help alleviate the pain that stems from your lower back or pelvis.

There are several ways you can do this. One way is to place a pillow, such as a wedge pillow, under your knees. The other option could be to use an adjustable base that can raise your knees for you.

Side Sleeping

Fibromyalgia is a very painful condition. It causes pain in tender spots throughout your entire body. However, side sleeping could be the temporary remedy that would enable you to sleep better, depending on where you’re experiencing the most pain.

The fetal position could help reduce tension throughout your body. That being said, be sure your bed provides great pressure relief so you don’t exacerbate any discomfort on the hip and shoulder.

People with fibromyalgia may find themselves switching positions throughout the night because that is their natural sleeping pattern or because their symptoms make them restless. If you’re a combination sleeper, it’s a good idea to ensure whichever bed you choose accommodates multiple positions and fosters easier movement.

Stomach Sleeping

People with fibromyalgia may find relief when sleeping on their stomachs. However, caution is advised with this position, primarily due to potential stress on the neck. You’ll want a flat pillow to minimize neck strain.

Additionally, ensure your mattress provides adequate support to prevent your hips from sinking too deeply, as this can lead to excessive lower back curvature and exacerbate pain. A supportive mattress, as well as a firm mattress topper, can help maintain proper alignment.

Tips for Getting Better Sleep with Fibromyalgia

Exercise

According to Harvard University5, exercise helps, even though you might find it hard and challenging. It should help you feel a lot better and more energized. Certain activities don’t require that much effort, such as walking, stretching, and even swimming. Even if it is only for a few short cycles at a time – it’s best to consider it. Of course, you should consult with a doctor to see what exercises are appropriate.

Best Mattress for Fibromyalgia FAQs

Is memory foam good for fibromyalgia?

Memory foam can be good for fibromyalgia as it allows contouring and pressure relief to help ease the tension and pain you may feel in your joints. However, you should always consider mattress firmness because even memory foam can be too firm to allow any sinkage. Look for medium to medium-firm memory foam that has a slow response and allows gentle contouring so that it doesn’t create any pressure buildup.

What mattress firmness is best for fibromyalgia?

Most people might benefit from a medium to medium-firm bed, depending on their body weight and preferred sleeping position. In other words, some may do better with a softer or firmer bed. For example, if you’re a side sleeper, particularly weighing under 130 pounds, you may need a softer bed to get better pressure relief. Stomach sleepers are likely to do better with a firmer bed, especially if they weigh over 230 pounds.

Will a memory foam bed topper help with fibromyalgia?

Even though a memory foam mattress topper is capable of helping you out with fibromyalgia, there are a lot of variables to consider. Right off the bat, you need to make sure that your mattress underneath it is not completely sagged. If that’s the case, replacing it should be a priority. In general, though, a mattress topper could go a long way in helping you out with this challenging condition.

Is restless legs syndrome related to fibromyalgia?

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is not directly related to fibromyalgia, but there is some sort of a connection8 between them. The truth is that people living with fibromyalgia are more prone to restless leg syndrome as well. If you experience this issue, the very first thing that you ought to do is to go ahead and call your doctor to see if there are any techniques that can help, as it’s definitely capable of keeping you up at night.
