If you love the pressure relief of memory foam but tend to sleep hot, the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® might be the mattress for you.
This mattress is designed to decrease the temperature by five degrees as you lie on it, absorbing your body temperature to keep you cool through the night. As a hot sleeper myself, I was dubious; after all, memory foam does tend to sleep hot. However, after reviewing it, not just for its cooling abilities but also for pressure relief, support, motion isolation, and more – I was impressed across the board.
This mattress is available in an all-foam and a hybrid option. In this review, I’ll be discussing the Medium Hybrid model.

Who I Recommend the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® For:
- Hot sleepers – The ProBreeze® is stacked with cooling foam innovation, which, according to Tempur-Pedic, can lower the bed’s temperature by five degrees. When I lay on it, I felt much cooler.
- Side sleepers –This bed offers excellent pressure relief, so I would say it’s a great fit for side sleepers. The mattress lets the hip and shoulder sink in comfortably while keeping the spine in alignment.
- Consumers who want design variety – The Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® is available in a medium firmness in either an all-foam structure or as a hybrid, which means it contains both foam and coils.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® For:

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6 /10 (Medium Firm)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
At Sleep Advisor, we rank mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, in which 10 is the firmest. I gave the ProBreeze® a 6 out of 10 for firmness, which falls in the medium-firm range on our scale.
How Does It Feel?
When I first lay down on this mattress, it felt firmer and a little more unyielding. However, after a few moments, I could feel the bed getting softer and more cool beneath me. After lying there for several minutes, the bed went from firm-feeling to almost malleable, cushioning, and very pressure-relieving. I could consistently feel the cooling properties at work, from just touching the cover to lying atop the bed.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Tempur-Pedic, their mattresses don’t have a weight limit. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all mattresses will be the best fit for all body types. Below, I’ll share what I found as an average-weight sleeper in each position, along with Loren and Spencer’s findings for petite and plus-size sleepers.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Loren said this bed felt very firm at first, but as time went on, it softened and evened out.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This mattress felt soft beneath my hip and shoulder, and my spine’s curvature felt intact.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – As time went on, Spencer found himself really sinking into the bed. Although his spine felt fine, he was unsure if it would stay that way if he slept on the mattress overnight.

Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – For Loren, the mattress felt firm at first and then adjusted to a nice even-keeled feel. She added that her spine felt supported.
- Average Weight Sleepers – I found that there was a good amount of sinking happening, but it still felt comfortable.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Spencer felt comfortable on his back, adding that there was a pleasant sinking but not like quicksand.

Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – At first, Loren wondered if this mattress was going to be too firm. There was no doubt that her spine remained propped up, but this can come at the expense of pressure relief until the mattress eventually softens up.
- Average Weight Sleepers – My back remained aloft and the pressure relief underneath me was comfortable.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Even though he was sinking in a good bit, Spencer said his back felt comfortable. That said, some significantly heavier sleepers may still want something firmer and more supportive for stomach sleeping than this mattress.

Pressure Relief

Like most Tempur-Pedic beds, the ProBreeze® excels in pressure relief. It felt firmer at first, but as I spent more time on it, I could feel my hips and shoulder sinking down into the mattress, relieving any pressure when on my side.
The sinking wasn’t so much that my spine felt out of alignment, though, which can happen with some extra soft memory foam beds. Overall, there was plenty of cushioning around my shoulders, hips, and other key pressure points that press into the mattress and bear the most weight.

Is the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® Good for Pain Relief?
The ProBreeze® could offer the pain relief you can expect from Tempur-Pedic but with the bonus of cooling technology. That being said, your body weight and sleep position will factor into how well it does at pain relief.
Back Pain
The mattress initially feels firm when lying on my back, but as the cooling absorption kicks in, I can feel my spine sinking comfortably into the mattress. I still feel plenty of lumbar support, though, and I imagine this would be a great fit for sleepers with back pain. However, it may not be firm enough for heavier stomach sleepers, who are more apt to sink in deeper, and this can worsen pain in the lumbar area.

Hip Pain
People with hip pain who sleep on their side need a mattress with plenty of pressure relief, and those who sleep on their stomachs need quality support. I think this mattress is ideal for side sleepers with hip pain as it cushions this area.
For stomach sleepers with hip pain, this mattress should work well, except it may be slightly too soft for those over 230 pounds.

Shoulder Pain
People with shoulder pain may exacerbate their symptoms when side sleeping on a bed that’s too firm The ProBreeze® will feel firm when you first lie down, but it softens considerably as it absorbs heat. I felt the pressure drain from my shoulder area as the mattress softened and contoured to my side.

Support

When talking about support, I’m referring to how well the mattress keeps the spine in healthy, neutral alignment. Sometimes, when a mattress is too soft, the spine won’t be fully supported.
This bed provides nearly perfect spinal alignment. My lumbar region felt lifted and supported in all positions. While the bed was soft and pressure-relieving, my lumbar spine never felt like it was sinking too far into the mattress.
My only note is that heavyweight sleepers should definitely go for the hybrid version of the bed for proper support, as the foam will likely sink too much. However, plus-size stomach sleepers may want a firm mattress topper to go on top or a firmer mattress altogether.
Motion Isolation

Motion transfer measures the amount of disturbance you’re likely to feel if somebody moves on the other side of the bed. This is an important consideration for couples who share a mattress.
On the ProBreeze®, I could barely feel any motion once I was settled into the bed. I only deducted one point because I could still feel motion when my sleeping partner got in and out of bed.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® gets a perfect score for its cooling abilities. Tempur-Pedic advertises that the bed should cool down by five degrees. While I am not sure of the exact decrease in temperature, I do know that it got considerably cooler just seconds after lying down.
I tested this mattress without sheets on it, but it was noticeable enough that it should also be felt through bedding. As such, I think this would be an excellent choice for those who are looking for a good cooling mattress.

If you are accustomed to innerspring beds, this mattress will feel much less bouncy than you are used to. While the hybrid model I tested does include a layer of springs, the mattress as a whole feels more like a standard memory foam bed with that traditional “sinking” feeling. The foam on this particular bed also takes some extra time to spring back into its original shape.
Edge Support

When lying down on this bed, from the middle out to the edges, I felt that my body weight was fully supported. This edge support meant that I could comfortably sleep on the entire surface of the bed without the edges sinking beneath my weight.
The edges sunk slightly when I sat on the edge of the bed, but I still felt supported.
Performance for Couples

Overall, the ProBreeze® is a great mattress for couples, including couples who tend to sleep hot or are easily disturbed when their partner moves at night. It also has good edge support, so you and your partner should be able to comfortably use the entire bed. However, it doesn’t have the bounce of an innerspring mattress, which may not be ideal for some sexually–active couples who prefer this in a mattress.

Construction: What’s Inside the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze®?
When ordering your ProBreeze®, you’ll have the option to choose between the Medium or Medium Hybrid models. The Medium is made purely out of foam, whereas the Medium Hybrid is made out of memory foam as well as innerspring coils. We’ll be taking a look at the construction of the Medium Hybrid.
No matter what size bed you get, the ProBreeze® hybrids are all 12 inches thick. Inside the mattress are three distinct layers combined to give the bed its unique cooling, pressure-relieving feeling.
- The top layer is made out of Tempur-Pedic’s Pure Cool® Material. This exclusive technology is designed to pull heat away from the body throughout the night so you don’t wake up in a sweat.
- In the middle is a layer of Ventilated Advanced Relief™ Material. This unit is what provides the ProBreeze® with such effective pressure relief. It’s a relatively slow-moving foam, which means it will contour to the shape of the body but may take a second to bounce back into its original shape. This foam is also ventilated to increase airflow throughout the bed.
- The bottom layer is made up of over 1,000 premium innerspring coils. This layer is what gives the hybrid model extra support, as well as more ventilation than the all-foam model. These springs are individually wrapped, so the bed still has quality motion isolation and stays quiet.

As I mentioned, this bed comes with free in-home delivery, which means Tempur-Pedic will deliver the mattress, set it up for you, remove any packaging, and remove your old mattress if you so choose. This means unboxing is about as simple as it gets. It also means that there is no off-gassing period because the mattress arrives fully expanded already, which is good news for those who are sensitive to smells.

Which Tempur-Pedic mattress is the coolest?
With advanced cooling technology, the ProBreeze® and the LuxeBreeze® are the coolest Tempur-Pedic mattresses currently available. The LuxeBreeze® may be slightly cooler than the ProBreeze®, but the difference isn’t that much.
What is the difference between the ProBreeze® and LuxeBreeze®?
The ProBreeze® and LuxeBreeze® are two versions of the TEMPUR-Breeze® mattress line. According to Tempur-Pedic, the ProBreeze® can cool down by up to five degrees, while the LuxeBreeze® can cool down by up to 10 degrees. The LuxeBreeze® is also slightly thicker at 13 inches compared to the ProBreeze®’s 12 inches.
Additionally, with the LuxeBreeze®, you can choose between the Soft, Medium Hybrid, or Firm models, whereas with the ProBreeze®, you can choose between an all-foam Medium or the Medium Hybrid.
Do I need to rotate my Tempur-Pedic mattress?
While you can rotate your mattress, you are not advised to flip your Tempur-Pedic mattress. Tempur-Pedic beds have a top side specifically designed for sleeping, so flipping it would impact its performance.

For people who sleep hot, the Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze® is an excellent option. This mattress has a unique adaptability; as it cools down, it also softens and molds to the body. This makes it a great choice for pressure relief but might give it too much of a ‘sinking’ feeling for combination or heavyweight sleepers.
Additionally, the ProBreeze® is about $1,000 cheaper than the very similar LuxeBreeze® model, which makes it a great choice for those with a slightly smaller budget. Overall, this bed received a score of 4 out of 5.
