Our Helix Moonlight Mattress Review for 2024

Helix is known for their line of high-quality bed-in-a-box mattresses that ship right to your door. We love that Helix allows you to choose between many firmness options, and their Helix Moonlight mattress stands out as the softest from the brand.

The Moonlight combines a softer feel with a hybrid construction that we think could be exceptional for those in search of great pressure relief from a mattress.

In our review, we’ll go over our testing findings of the Helix Moonlight. We’ll cover how it stacks up for different sleep positions, along with important features like support, bounce, and more.

Pros
Although softer beds often make people feel stuck inside the first few layers, this is not the case with the Helix Moonlight mattress. This hybrid is soft but still bouncy enough to facilitate easier repositioning, which we think is great for combination sleepers.
The Helix Moonlight has a breathable cover combined with coils that enhance breathability to create a cool and airy feel. On top of that, you can upgrade to the GlacioTex™ cooling cover if you need more cooling.
This mattress is also available as an upgraded Luxe model with more lumbar support and cooling, along with a pillow top. The Luxe also has a 5-year longer warranty.
Cons
The softness won’t work for everyone, which is why we think this bed might not be the best for heavier people and most stomach sleepers.
Generally speaking, people over 300 pounds are better off with a more supportive mattress. Although this is a hybrid with coils, it’s likely not firm enough for this group.
We found the Helix Moonlight mattress doesn’t have the best motion isolation, which is a drawback for couples, especially if one person is a light sleeper and the other tends to toss and turn.

Who We Recommend The Helix Moonlight For:

  • Hot sleepers – The Helix Moonlight has some basic cooling features that should be good for most hot sleepers. The construction starts with a Soft Touch design cover that’s cool to the touch and breathable. On top of that, there are coils to help with airflow so that the bed doesn’t trap heat.
  • Back and side sleepers – We think this bed is a great option for lightweight back sleepers and lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. They should experience enough support and pressure relief in these positions.
  • Those with joint pain – This bed’s softer feel could make it a good option for people with joint pain. The construction offers enough cushioning and pressure relief around the sensitive areas such as the hips and shoulders.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Helix Moonlight For:

  • People who prefer all-foam beds – This is a hybrid and a bouncy one at that, so if you’re a fan of the slow-sinking feeling that memory foam provides, you might want another bed.
  • Stomach sleepersStomach sleepers often need firm support to keep their hips from sinking. We don’t think stomach sleepers will get the lift they need from the Moonlight.
  • Heavier sleepers – People weighing over 300 pounds will experience the Moonlight mattress as even softer, and this could compromise their body alignment. Instead, we recommend a mattress specifically made for heavy sleepers.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Moonlight Mattress

On the Helix website, the Moonlight has a score of 4.4 out of 5, with customers explaining that it feels like sleeping on a cloud. Many also reported how it helped them with chronic back and neck problems. Those who scored it low disliked its firmness.

Testing the Helix Moonlight Mattress

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Our reviews are based on in-person testing from our mattress reviewers. When we test mattresses, we focus on the overall feel and performance, but we also look at specific factors such as cooling, motion isolation, edge support, bounce, and more. We also test the mattress in each sleeping position to evaluate who it would be the best for.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

At Sleep Advisor, we rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. When it comes to the Helix Moonlight, we think it feels like a 6 out of 10, which is a feel we’d describe as medium-firm. Although this is not the softest feel out there, it is among the softest models from Helix.

How Does It Feel?

The Helix Moonlight has a softer feel because of the pillow top, which is why we were surprised to find as much bounce as we did. Most soft-feeling beds let you sink right away, but the Moonlight feels more supportive since it cushions and contours your body only at the surface.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Helix, the Helix Moonlight can support up to 1,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds per side. However, just because it can support this much, that doesn’t mean it’ll be the best fit for all body types.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We think the Helix Moonlight might be a good fit for lightweight side sleepers. The pillow top should deliver enough cushioning to accommodate these sleepers.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight sleepers should like the soft feel of the pillow top to help reduce pressure in the hips and shoulders.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers will sink deeper into the pillow top. However, we think there’s still enough support underneath to make the Moonlight a good fit for this group.

Explore more mattresses for side sleepers here.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We expect this bed to offer adequate support for back sleepers under 130 pounds since they don’t press so deeply into the pillow top.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Back sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should feel supported and cushioned, although those closer to 230 pounds might want more lumbar support.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – We think the Helix Moonlight is too soft for heavy back sleepers as it doesn’t offer enough support in the lumbar area, which could result in back pain.

Browse: Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – This bed might not be firm enough even for lightweight stomach sleepers, except maybe the most petite ones.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – We think average-weight stomach sleepers will notice their hips dipping down into the pillow top, which can cause the lower back to hyperextend.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – We found this Helix mattress to be too soft to support the heaviest stomach sleepers. Instead, heavyweight sleepers should check out the brand’s Helix Plus model, as this is specially made for this weight group.

Discover the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Pressure Relief

5/5

From our experience, this Helix mattress should provide excellent pressure relief, particularly for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. The softer pillow top and comfort layers allow you to sink just enough to cushion the most sensitive areas, such as the hips, knees, and shoulders.

Is the Helix Moonlight Good for Pain Relief?

Helix Moonlight can be a good option for people with pain, especially those with achy joints. This is because the bed’s softer feel cradles the body at the surface level, offering enough cushioning to help relieve tension. However, your weight and sleep position can also impact whether a bed would be helpful for pain relief.

Back Pain

We think this bed should be a good fit for some lighter-weight people with back pain. However, those weighing above 130 pounds may not get enough spinal support from this bed if they’re a strict stomach or back sleeper. We recommend checking out our list of great mattresses for back pain for additional options.

Hip Pain

The Helix Moonlight does a good job of cushioning the hips while the coils support the entire body in alignment. This helps ease the hip pain by allowing a bit of sinkage, but we advise you to also consider your preferred sleeping position and body weight. Heavier people and stomach sleepers with hip pain might prefer a firmer mattress since we think the Moonlight could make hip pain worse for these folks.

You can find our picks for the best beds for hip pain here.

Shoulder Pain

This Helix model should be a good pick for those who usually experience shoulder pain when sleeping on their side. This can sometimes be the result of sleeping on a bed that’s too firm, so having that soft cushioning provided by the pillow top could make all the difference. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here.

Support

4/5

Helix beds are known to combine support with pressure relief, and the Moonlight is no different. The support layer is made up of individually wrapped coils to help keep the body aligned.

However, this bed’s softer feel also means it doesn’t offer as much support across different weight groups and sleep positions compared to other Helix models. It should be a good option for lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but even in this case, you should be careful if you’re a strict back or stomach sleeper.

Motion Transfer

3/5

Motion transfer is helpful for couples and co-sleepers, especially if you usually wake up when someone moves on the other side of the bed. Since the Helix Moonlight is on the softer side and has coils, most of the movement from one side can be felt on the other side. This might not be important for solo sleepers or those who don’t wake up easily, but it could be a dealbreakerl if you’re a light sleeper.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

4/5

Julia Forbes testing how fast a mattress cools down
Julia Forbes, our lead product tester, testing a mattress’s cooling capabilities.

If you’re someone who often overheats at night, we recommend a high-quality cooling mattress. When it comes to this performance category, we noticed the Helix Moonlight has good breathability and cooling, given the specific features it comes with. The Soft Touch cover is naturally breathable, but you can also upgrade to a GlacioTex™ cover that’s designed for those who need more advanced cooling. Also, the coils are helpful for extra airflow.

Bounce

5/5

The Helix Moonlight’s high amount of bounce earned it a perfect score here. The coils in this bed give off a springy feel.

You might not notice the bounce right away if you just press into the softer pillow top, but you should notice the coils spring back right away if you press deeper into the mattress. We think this is great for sexually couples, combination sleepers, and people with mobility issues as it can help with repositiong and getting in and out of bed.

Edge Support

4/5

The Helix Moonlight might be on the softer side, but we found it does a good job of keeping the edges from collapsing. The perimeter is reinforced with additional pocketed coils to help with edge support. Sleepers should feel secure enough when lying near the edge, although sitting might not feel as comfortable due to the softer pillow top.

Performance for Couples

3.5/5

Based on our experience, we think most couples look for motion isolation, a little bounce, cooling, and great edge support. The Helix Moonlight did well in multiple categories, so it could appeal to some couples.

Generally speaking, its bounce should work well for sexually active couples, but the motion transfer it causes might be a drawback for others. However, it has good edge support for couples to use the entire surface of the mattress for sleeping.

Preference-based Features

Made in the USA

Anyone who likes shopping locally will appreciate Helix’s USA-based manufacturing. All their beds are custom-made in the States. Explore more mattresses made in the USA here.

Bed-in-a-box

Helix is a bed-in-a-box company that ships their mattresses to your door in a box. Shipping is free, and setup is easy, which is good to know because these beds tend to be quite heavy.

Adjustable Base Compatible

This mattress works with most bed foundations and bases, including adjustable frames. Helix specifies that you should use a platform or slat-based foundation with slats no further than 5 inches apart. A traditional box spring is not recommended for this Helix mattress.

Construction: What’s Inside the Helix Moonlight?

The Helix Moonlight is a hybrid with soft foam and supportive coils, stacking up to 11.5 inches in total. The Luxe version is taller, standing at 13.5 inches tall together with the pillow top.

  • The surface of this mattress features a Soft Touch design cover that’s cool to the touch and smooth. You can upgrade it to the GlacioTex™ for even more cooling.
  • The comfort layer is made from latex foam that’s contouring and soft to hug the curves and relieve pressure.
  • The transition layer is a bit firmer, providing ergonomic support. It’s still cushioning, but the added firmness makes it a good transition to the coils.
  • The support layer features up to 950 individually wrapped coils that give this Helix its support, breathability, and most of all, bounce.
  • The base layer is made from DuraDense foam that supports the upper layers, making the bed more durable.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Helix Moonlight arrives at your doorstep in a box. We found it takes 10 to 15 minutes to unbox and set up, but we advise you to get some help as it can be quite heavy. The Queen alone weighs 100 pounds.

If you notice any off-gassing when you open the packaging, we recommend you let the mattress sit in a well-ventilated room for at least 48 hours. This way, it will have enough time to inflate and come to its full size, and all the odors will dissipate as well.

Certifications

  • Shipping – Helix offers free shipping to shoppers in the continental U.S., but there’s a shipping fee of $250 for those in Alaska and Hawaii. Canadian customers are required to pay that same shipping fee, along with a customs tax.
  • Trial – You can keep the Helix Moonlight for 100 nights to ensure it’s the right mattress for you.
  • Warranty – This bed comes with a 10-year warranty.
  • Return Policy – Returns are free and easy, but you’re required to keep the mattress for at least 30 nights. If you decide to return it, you must do that before the trial is up. The company will pick up the mattress and refund your money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Helix mattresses sag?

Helix mattresses are built to last for years to come thanks to the high-quality materials in them. We don’t think the Moonlight should sag as it has sturdy coils, even around the perimeter. However, remember to use the right base with slats no further than 5 inches apart.

How long do Helix mattresses last?

Helix models should last 10 years, which is great since the company offers a 10-year warranty for their core collection.

Is the Helix Moonlight good for side sleepers?

We think the Moonlight is a good option for side sleepers who need more cushioning. This bed has a softer pillow top that hugs the hips and shoulders, which is where your weight and pressure gather in this position.

What happens if I don’t like my Helix mattress?

If you find that the Helix Moonlight doesn’t fit your needs, you can return it before the trial is up. As mentioned, you should keep it for at least 30 nights because this is how long the company says it takes for you to get used to sleeping on a new mattress. If you still don’t like it, reach out to a team member at Helix, and they’ll arrange a pickup before they refund your money.

Our Verdict

Helix offers many options ranging from soft to firm. The Moonlight is one of their softest models and is also among the most affordable, though that doesn’t mean it lacks in quality craftsmanship

We think the innerspring layer gives it enough bounce for those who prefer springy beds. On the other hand, there’s enough cushioning and softness coming from the pillow top to hug your body in all the right places. Although it doesn’t have the best motion isolation, consider if this is important to you. Overall, we gave it a score of 4.2 out of 5.
