Who We Recommend the GhostBed Classic For:

  • Combo sleepers – The quick-responding latex surface and the bounce from the dense foam base make repositioning a cinch, while the medium-firm feel should accommodate a variety of sleep positions. Combination sleepers who like to switch it up should welcome these features.

  • Couples – The motion-isolating benefits of the foam combined with the cooling aerated latex and gel-infused memory foam make the GhostBed a good choice for couples. Those who bunk with a restless sleeper should be able to rest uninterrupted by their partner’s movements.

  • Hot sleepers – Its breathable cover and aerated latex keep the surface cool, and the memory foam materials are positioned away from the cover and infused with gel so that heat shouldn't be trapped next to the body.

Who We Don’t Recommend the GhostBed Classic For:

  • People who prefer the classic feel of memory foam – The inclusion of high-quality gel memory foam offers deep pressure relief, especially for side sleepers, but the quick-responding latex surface and dense base should keep you resting closer to the surface. Although this makes the mattress easier to reposition on, you likely won’t experience the deep hug feel associated with traditional memory foam.

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Folks on the lighter side of the scale may find that the GhostBed is too firm for them to be truly comfortable. These petite sleepers won’t be able to sink enough to experience pressure relief or cushioning.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6.5/10 (Medium Firm)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Mattress Firmness Level 6.5

When measuring a mattress’s firmness, we rate how it feels on a 1-10 scale with 1 being the most soft. We rated the GhostBed Classic a 6.5 out of 10, which makes it just slightly firmer than medium-firm. This firmness level should work especially well for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, as it provides a bit more pushback and support without sacrificing comfort.

Lightweight sleepers may find that they don't sink enough to enjoy the same level of cushioning, though, and are probably better off with a softer mattress that’s closer to 5 out of 10 in the firmness scale.

How Does It Feel?

When you first lie down on this mattress, you should notice the quick-response time of the latex which conforms to your shape without making you feel trapped in the mattress. As your weight settles, most sleepers should start slowly interacting with the gel memory layer for deep pressure relief. You should also notice a decent amount of cooling thanks to the aerated latex and gel that is used in the memory layer.

What We Like About the GhostBed Classic

  • Cooling features – This mattress uses a breathable cover, naturally cooling latex, and gel-infused memory foam to help dissipate heat and provide a comfortable sleeping environment.

  • Responsive – If you’re a combination sleepers who repositions at night, this bed responds quickly to movement so that you won’t feel that you are stuck or sinking every time you flip over.

  • Budget-friendly – For shoppers on a budget, the GhostBed Classic offers an affordable, yet high-quality mattress experience. Latex is considered the most durable mattress material, which also ensures this bed should stand the test of time.

Our GhostBed Classic Complaints

  • May be too firm for some sleepers – The slightly higher firmness level of the GhostBed means that it may not accommodate as wide of a range of sleepers as other, more medium-firm or plush mattresses.

  • Doesn’t satisfy those who prefer the feeling of coils – The GhostBed is a hybrid mattress made from memory foam and latex, which means it won’t provide exactly the same feel as other hybrid beds made with coils. While the latex material is bouncy and supportive, a mattress that contains coils should still have noticeably more pushback, giving you the feeling of sleeping ‘on’ the bed.

  • Thinner profile – At 11 inches tall, the GhostBed won’t take up as much space as a thicker, more robust mattress. For those who want their mattress to be the focal point of their bedroom, the GhostBed’s thinner profile may be disappointing to some.

Testing the GhostBed Classic Mattress: How it Performed

How did the GhostBed Classic stack up in our testing? To determine its performance, we tested the GhostBed Classic for side, stomach and back sleepers to better understand which sleep positions that this mattress is best suited for. Body weight can also affect how you experience a mattress so we made sure to consider this factor as well. We also examined qualities like supportiveness, responsiveness, and motion isolation to decide if it’s a good fit for couples.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

This product’s weight limit is set at 750 pounds, which is significantly higher than many other bed-in-a-box foam mattresses. However, GhostBed does recommend that individuals over 300 pounds consider the King size for greater support and space.

Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)★☆☆★★☆★★☆
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★☆★★★★★☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★★★★★★★☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – The firmness of the GhostBed is likely too high for lightweight side sleepers. This means it may be too firm to adequately contour to these sleepers hips and shoulders, which may lead to pressure build up around the shoulders and hips.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight folks who sleep on their sides should experience a nice level of pressure relief. These sleepers should sink into the first couple of layers just enough for adequate cushioning. However, if you’re on the lighter side of average-weight, you may find that this bed is just too firm over time.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – The GhostBed’s firm upper layers should provide substantial support and pressure relief without making these sleepers feel as if they are sinking to the bottom.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Although some lightweight back sleepers may find this bed to be a bit too firm, we think many should enjoy the support and spine alignment from the dense foam base and latex layer.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – The foam layers of the GhostBed Classic provide ample contouring for the lower back while the base layer works to keep your spine aligned.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight snoozers should find that the latex layer of this mattress does a good job at keeping them from sinking too far down, as well as give them solid support.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should find that this bed gives them comfortable, bouncy support along with great spinal alignment. However, some may find the firmness a bit unforgiving and unable to cushion their chest and shoulders properly.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Many average-weight stomach sleepers should feel well-supported and cushioned by this mattress. However, some stomach sleepers who weigh on the heavier side of average-weight may find the GhostBed unsupportive which can cause sagging hips and a misaligned spine.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers need the most support out of any other type since these sleepers tend to sink into the mattress more. While the GhostBed may work well for some, its lack of coils and slightly firm feel may not be supportive enough to keep heavier sleepers’ hips raised and spine aligned.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Mattresses need to take pressure off your hips and shoulders to keep you from waking with aches and pains. Side sleepers in particular may experience a lot of pressure building up because they put a good amount of weight on small parts of the body. The GhostBed Classic contains two pressure-relieving materials – latex and memory foam – which softly conform to your body’s curves to maintain a comfortable position and melt away any pressure buildup.

Back Pain – The GhostBed’s pressure-relieving latex layer should help eliminate lower back pain, and the supportive base helps with spinal alignment. Overall, this should be a great choice for those with back pain.
Hip Pain – While the Ghosted does excel at pressure relief, it may still be too firm for some sleepers to experience hip pain relief. Those who experience hip pain may be better served from a softer mattress that provides a deeper sink for greater pressure relief.
Shoulder Pain – When you sleep on your side, you concentrate a good bit of your weight onto your shoulder which can lead to aches and pains. The GhostBed should relieve shoulder pain for many, but some sleepers may crave a softer mattress that cradles this area more.

If your bed is too soft and doesn’t have a proper support system, your spine remains in an unnatural position throughout the night. This could lead to major back problems if repeated over a long period of time, but in the short term, it may create aches and pains in, especially in the back-sleeping position.

The thick, high-density foam base provides some bounce, as does the surface layer of latex, but this is slightly muffled by the memory foam layer that is sandwiched between the two. Overall, the bed has a medium bounce that should provide adequate support and assist with repositioning so you don’t feel stuck.

Motion Transfer

GhostBed performs well when it comes to motion isolation, as we typically expect from foam constructions. Foam absorbs and muffles vibrations before they transfer and disturb a partner sleeping on the other side. You should not have a problem with being woken by movement if you sleep light and this is a specific concern of yours.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

Hot sleepers need a cooling mattress to feel comfortable at night. Designed with a breathable polyester/viscose blend cover, aerated latex, and gel-infused memory foam, GhostBed should help hot sleepers have a cool trip to dreamland. This mattress also keeps your body out of contact with heat-trapping foams in the middle and bottom of the bed, which promotes greater temperature regulation.

Performance for Couples

The GhostBed’s well-rounded features should make it a good choice for most couples. If your sleepmate tosses and turns through the night, the GhostBed’s excellent motion isolation should keep both partners happy and undisturbed by the other’s movements. Additionally, the slightly firmer feel should be supportive enough for most co-sleepers, while the cooling features help keep both parties comfortable. For sexually-active couples especially, the bounciness of the latex layer should go a long way in keeping both partners happy.

Construction: What’s Inside the GhostBed Classic?

The GhostBed Classic is 11 inches thick and contains three layers. Starting from the outside, the cover contains a plush blend of polyester and viscose, which was designed to be breathable and wick away moisture. It is fully removable as well, which is convenient for spot cleaning.

  • On top lies a soft and breathable cover made of a polyester/viscose blend. Directly underneath the cover you’ll find 1.5 inches of Continuous Aerated Latex foam that provides bounce and responsiveness which assists in repositioning. This naturally heat-resistant material is also aerated with channels to promote airflow and temperature regulation.
  • Sandwiched in the middle is 2 inches of gel memory foam, which provides a deeper level of pressure relief and a transition to the base. This layer is positioned away from the body and infused with gel to reduce possible heat retention and overheating on the surface. Additionally, the memory foam layer underneath the latex helps keep sleepers from sinking too far down in the bed, and it should also provide body-contouring and pressure relief.
  • The third layer is 7.5 inches of dense poly foam which gives the mattress a durable structure. Designed to absorb and distribute your body weight, this layer also provides enough support to keep your spine in good alignment, regardless of sleep position.

The GhostBed Classic’s unique construction combines the bounce of latex with the pressure relief of memory foam. Its affordable price point and cooling properties make it an attractive option for a variety of sleepers.

Back Sleeping Icon

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need reinforced support around the lumbar area to keep their spine straight. The GhostBed Classic’s supportive latex and dense poly foam base help support neutral spine alignment, while the soft memory foam layer conforms to and supports the natural curve of their back.

Stomach Sleeping Icon

Stomach Sleepers

The GhostBed Classic is a bit firmer than average, so most stomach sleepers should experience good spinal alignment as the thick supportive layers prevent their hips from sinking too low.

Combination Sleeping Icon

Combination Sleepers

The GhostBed Classic’s latex layer promotes plenty of bounce which makes repositioning a breeze. Those who move around a lot should be comfortable in most positions due to the neutral feel and contouring from the memory foam layers.

Couples Icon

If you share your mattress with a partner, you should find that the GhostBed Classic meets most of your needs well. The construction isolates motion well, while the latex creates bounce which is appealing to sexually-active couples. Couple also shouldn’t overheat thanks to this bed’s cooling properties.

Heavy Sleepers Icon

Heavy Sleepers

Heavier sleepers should feel well-supported by this mattress’s dense poly foam base and thick latex layer. These sleepers should find that they sink through the upper comfort layers and find deeper support in the lower sections of the bed.

Light Weight Sleepers

Lightweight Sleepers

Those on the lighter side should love the upper comfort layers, but some lightweight sleepers may find the bed too firm and unable to come into contact with the lower support layers.

Light Weight Sleepers

Average Weight Sleepers

Average-weight back sleepers should enjoy both the contouring softness of the top layers and the supportive base that helps promote spinal alignment. Those who sleep on their sides may find that too much pressure builds up around their hips and shoulders, and stomach sleepers could feel as if they are sinking too far into the bed.

Overall Value

The GhostBed Classic packs a lot of value with its latex and dense foam design. With a 25-year warranty and affordable price point, the GhostBed Classic may be a smart investment for many.

Our Verdict

The GhostBed Classic is a unique mattress that has a different take on the traditional all-foam design. By combining latex with gel-infused memory foam, the GhostBed Classic offers a cooling, pressure-relieving night’s rest.

We think that combination sleepers, heavyweight sleepers, and couples who can’t agree on a firmness level should be fans of the GhostBed Classic.

Hot sleepers should also find that the aerated latex and cooling-gel infused foam should provide them with a mattress that will turn their body heat down. However, lighter folks who prefer to sleep on their sides may want to find a bed that offers more pressure relief.
