How Does It Feel?
Lying on this mattress, it should feel like a plush, gentle hug, and sleepers should immediately feel the pressure-relieving comfort layers and the cool-to-the-touch cover.
Despite some sinkage, we found the mattress to be responsive and bouncy, which should aid with changing positions during the night. Sleepers are not likely to feel ‘stuck’ in this mattress. Lastly, the coil layer should provide decent support for most back and side sleepers, but stomach sleepers will want a firmer and more supportive mattress.

Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We think lightweight side sleepers should benefit from the plush sinkage of this mattress, reducing pressure on the shoulder and hip.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should feel comfortable and supported, but those closer to 230 pounds may feel some pressure on the shoulder and hip.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers will likely sink in too far and experience pressure around the shoulder and hip. In this case, we recommend something more substantial that’s made for heavyweight sleepers.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should feel comfortable on this mattress, benefiting from the support and pressure relief.

Pressure Relief & Pain
The GhostBed 3D Matrix® comes with excellent comfort layers for pressure relief. The memory foam and proprietary Ghost Bounce layers offer decent sinkage and pressure relief. However, because this mattress isn’t as firm, the pressure relief is best experienced by light and average-weight back and side sleepers.
Heavyweight people and most stomach sleepers (unless they are very petite) will not experience proper support and as a result, may experience pain in areas where their sleeping position creates the most pressure.
Back Pain – Back sleepers up to around 300 pounds should experience proper pressure relief and support. Stomach sleepers over 130 lbs will not receive enough support, likely causing lower back pain.
Hip Pain – While this bed should be soft enough to accommodate lightweight and average–weight side sleepers with hip pain, those above 230 pounds could wind up exacerbating their discomfort by sinking too far into the layers.
Shoulder Pain – As with hip pain, petite and average-weight side sleepers should experience pressure relief to help with shoulder pain, but those over 230 pounds will want a different mattress.
Support
Support is valuable because it reflects a bed’s ability to keep the sleeper lifted and foster a neutral and healthy spine alignment, which is vital for preventing back pain.
The GhostBed utilizes both supportive foams and coils to keep sleepers lifted. While foams can provide good support, the advantage of coils is that they provide extra reinforcement. While GhostBed says their 3D Matrix® mattress can support up to 750 pounds when used with a strong foundation, we found that it is best experienced by individuals weighing up to 230 pounds.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer describes the amount of motion that travels from one side of the bed to the other. Conversely, motion isolation describes the ability to limit this motion transfer, which is important for couples and co-sleepers who don’t want interrupted sleep due to each other’s tossing and turning.
The GhostBed 3D Matrix® is a hybrid, so it comes with foam and coils. Generally, coils can be bouncy, but this bed uses individually-wrapped springs, which allows them to move more independently and transfer motion less. This mattress pleasantly surprised us, isolating motion quite well. Co-sleepers should not feel each other’s tossing and turning and still benefit from the buoyancy of the coils for repositioning.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
If you’re a hot sleeper or someone living in a warmer climate, you probably know that high-quality cooling mattresses can be worth the investment. This mattress should be a good fit for hot sleepers because it has multiple temperature-regulating features.
The cover is cool to the touch, and GhostBed infused gel into their memory foam layer to prevent the material from overheating. The addition of a coil layer also adds airflow.
Performance for Couples
When couples share a mattress, they are often concerned with motion isolation, bounce, and compatibility with various sleeping positions. Of course, these are up to preference, but we believe the GhostBed 3D Matrix® is a great fit for light to average-weight couples.
This mattress has some bounce, which many sexually-active couples may enjoy, and despite the bounce, it still seems to isolate motion well, so couples should not wake up from the other person’s movements. Lastly, the 3D Matrix is compatible with most sleeping positions for light and average-weight sleepers.

Construction: What’s Inside the GhostBed 3D Matrix®?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix® is a 12-inch tall hybrid mattress that comes with multiple foam layers and an innerspring unit made of coils. The Ghost Ice Cooling Cover should provide a crisp feel right at the surface, as it’s designed with phase-change fabric that responds to your body heat and adjusts accordingly to keep you nice and cool.
- Lying just below the cover is the 3D Matrix® Polymer Layer. This patented material from GhostBed includes gel and a honeycomb-like design to help dissipate any heat buildup for more comfortable sleeping when it’s hot out.
- The first foam unit is a 2-inch thick memory foam infused with gel for pressure relief and extra cooling.
- Further down, you’ll find the Ghost Bounce Foam, which has more a responsive feel to help provide a good contrast against the memory foam.
- The transition layer is a soft foam designed to ease you into the coil unit below. Together, these three foam sections are meant to provide that balanced feel we described above.
- The innerspring unit is made up of individually-wrapped coils. Not only do these coils provide support, but individually wrapping them in fabric helps curb motion transfer. Additionally, the coils deliver airflow through the bed for further cooling.
- Resting below the coils is a 1-inch thick layer of high-density foam to improve durability and provide additional overall support.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The GhostBed 3D Matrix® is a bed-in-a-box mattress that ships to your home. When unboxing this mattress, you will want to leave it in a well-ventilated room while the layers return to their normal shape. This typically takes a few hours, and there will be some off-gassing during this time.
In colder climates, this process could take up to 5 days. After the mattress is fully inflated, any smells should dissipate.
