Pros
The bed has a 7-inch base layer that is made of motion-isolating support foam. This means if there is movement on one side of the bed, it won’t easily transfer to the other side.
The Douglas Summit’s cover is a CoolSense® cover that has CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibers that absorb moisture to keep you cool and dry while sleeping.
Along with the mattress cover, the ecoLight® cooling gel foam layer has Polar® temperature regulation technology.
Cons
The bed has average edge support, meaning when you sit or lie on the very edge of the bed, it sinks in slightly.
Like other Douglas mattresses, the Summit is only sold in Canada, so unfortunately, if you don’t live in Canada, you are unable to purchase this bed.
This is a medium-firm mattress, so we feel that some stomach sleepers may not feel like the Summit is firm enough.

Who We Recommend The Douglas Summit For:

  • Back sleepers – This bed has a medium-firm feel, which typically provides enough support for back sleepers. We feel that back sleepers, especially those of light and average weights, should be comfortable with the Douglas Summit mattress. This mattress offers the perfect mix of pressure relief and support.

  • Hot sleepers – The Douglas Summit has a CoolSense® cover woven with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibers. This makes the surface of the mattress cool to the touch, keeping you cool and dry throughout the night. Not only that, but this bed has an ecoLight® cooling gel foam layer, and gel further cools a mattress. Finally, this gel foam layer is enhanced by Polar® temperature balancing technology that keeps the surface of the mattress at a desirable temperature; you’ll feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter. With these features in mind, we think this is a fantastic choice for hot sleepers.

  • Those looking for pressure relief – The premium Elastex® foam layer of the Douglas Summit provides a balance of support and comfort, which is great for people who need pressure relief. Specifically, those with physical ailments, athletes, or those with active lifestyles should enjoy the comfort provided by this bed.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Douglas Summit For:

  • Stomach sleepers – Most stomach sleepers will need a bit more support than what is provided by this foam mattress. Stomach sleepers tend to need a firmer model as their hips can dip in softer beds, affecting back alignment.

  • Heavier folksHeavier sleepers will likely need a firmer mattress than the Douglas Summit, one that gives them more support. This way, they sink into the mattress as much and will feel that their spine is more supported.

  • Side sleepers who like a plush feel – Based on their testing, our review team felt that the Douglas Summit wouldn’t be ideal for side sleepers seeking a plusher mattress.

Testing the Douglas Summit Mattress: How it Performed

To test the Douglas Summit Mattress, our review team tested the bed for side, back, and stomach sleeping to see how it performed in each posture, specifically for support and pressure relief. They also tested the mattress for other important preference-based features like motion isolation, bounce, cooling, and edge support.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10 (Medium Firm)

We give this mattress a 6 out of 10 firmness rating, a medium firm rating based on our firmness scale.

Our lighter-weight reviewer provided further detail on how this bed felt. She felt supported by the bed when she was lying on it, but didn’t feel that it was too firm; she still felt that the mattress provides a slight hug that cradles and comforts the body. The Douglas Summit is not too soft that it’s constricting; you can still move around easily. This medium-firm feel is provided by the layers of foam in the mattress that are both supportive and cushioning.

How Does It Feel?

Once you unbox your Douglas Summit mattress and let it decompress, you can cozy up onto the bed, lying on top of the cool and breathable mattress cover. Settling into the bed, you should feel the mattress contour your body while still feeling supported. The Douglas Summit is constructed with three foam layers, which provide a mix of comfort and support to help you achieve a good night’s rest.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

The Douglas Summit mattress has a weight limit of 250 pounds per person, with a 500-pound total weight capacity for the bed.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Since the Douglas Summit is not too firm, some lighter side sleepers may feel enough cushion from it. However, side sleepers often need a softer mattress that provides lots of contouring around their hips and shoulders, and this mattress may not be soft enough for them.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – This bed may feel soft enough for most average-weight sleepers because they will probably sink into the bed more than lightweight sleepers. However, some average-weight folks may still want a mattress with more cushion.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – In general, heavier folks could find the Douglas Summit to be too soft because they sink in too much and lose support. That being said, some heavyweight side sleepers may enjoy this softness.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lighter-weight back sleepers, like our reviewer, should find the right mix of cushion, bounce, and support from this mattress.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Similar to lightweight folks, average-weight back sleepers should find that the Douglas Summit is a great choice for them. The foam layers can support their spine while still offering comfort.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – While we think this mattress is best for back sleepers, heavier people who sleep on their back may feel that they sink too far into the Douglas Summit, which limits the support the bed can provide their back. This lack of support may lead to pain or discomfort. Whether a heavyweight sleeper likes this mattress will depend on the sleeper’s personal preference.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We think most lighter stomach sleepers will find that this bed isn’t firm enough to support their spine. However, of all stomach sleepers, lightweight stomach sleepers would find the most support from the Douglas Summit.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight folks who sleep on their stomach will probably feel pain and discomfort as we don’t think they’d get enough firm support in this posture.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier stomach sleepers should look for a mattress that is firmer than the Douglas Summit so they have enough support to keep the hips from dipping while on their stomach.

Pressure Relief & Pain

4/5

Our reviewers found that the Douglas Summit was a great choice for people looking for pressure relief. Immediately after lying on the bed, they felt supported yet still cradled by the plush foam mattress. The Elastex® foam layer offers great support and comfort for people with aches and pains, athletes, or anyone with a very active lifestyle. This medium-firm bed is supportive but still conforms to the body to help provide relief for ailments and pain.

Back Pain – This mattress could alleviate back pain by molding the body’s shape while maintaining appropriate support. However, we don’t recommend this bed for stomach sleepers with back pain, who may find this bed too soft, which can cause the hips to sink too far and the lower back to curve.

Read more: Best Mattress for Back Pain

Hip Pain – Back sleepers with hip pain will likely enjoy the Douglas Summit because it has both cushioning and support. However, side sleepers with hip pain may find this mattress to be too firm, while stomach sleepers with hip pain could find it to be too soft and they’d sink in too much. If the bed doesn’t have the proper support for the sleeper, the mattress won’t help alleviate hip pain.

Related: Best Mattress for Hip Pain

Shoulder Pain – This bed can help relieve shoulder pain because the layers of foam cushion allow you to sink into the mattress just enough to relieve pressure, while still maintaining spinal support. We think this mattress is best suited for back sleepers with shoulder pain, as opposed to side or stomach sleepers, who may find the bed to be too soft or firm, respectively.

Explore: Best Mattress for Shoulder Pain

Support

4/5

The Douglas Summit has multiple foam layers that are durable and stable, supporting the back and spine. The 7-inch foam base of the mattress provides ample support, along with the two other foam layers. However, the Douglas Summit seems most supportive for back sleepers. We don’t think this bed would be supportive enough for stomach sleepers and heavier individuals.

Additionally, the edge support, which is the level of reinforcement around the outside of the bed, is limited for this mattress. While there is decent support at the edges of the bed, you may feel like you’re going to roll off if you tend to sleep towards the outside of your bed.

Motion Isolation

5/5

The motion isolation provided by the 7-inch base of the Douglas Summit is great, meaning movement on one side of the bed is not likely to be felt on the other side. Couples may enjoy a mattress with high motion isolation because one person shouldn’t feel their partner get out of bed or toss and turn.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

5/5

As we’ve already discussed, the cooling qualities and temperature regulation within this mattress are top-tier. The breathable mattress cover made with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibers absorbs moisture and keeps feeling cool and dry while sleeping.

Along with the mattress cover, the ecoLight® cooling gel foam and Polar® temperature balancing technology work together to further cool the mattress and provide temperature regulation. The temperature regulation provided by the Polar® technology ensures that you feel warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Bounce

4/5

We think you should experience some good bounce from the Douglas Summit mattress, provided by the Elastex® foam. If you’re someone who changes positions often or has limited mobility, a bouncier bed could aid with repositioning so you don’t feel ‘stuck’ in the mattress.

Edge Support

3/5

Unfortauntely, we weren’t very impressed with the edge support from the Douglas Summit. Edge support focuses on how sturdy and supportive the perimeter of a mattress feels. Sturdy edges are often appealing to folks who like to spread out, such as couples.

Performance for Couples

4/5

We rate this mattress a 4 out of 5 in terms of performance for couples. For the most part, we recommend this mattress for couples. The bed does an excellent job of reducing motion transfer between sleepers.

However, we didn’t find the edge support on the mattress to be as good as it could be, which brought the score down. This limited edge support means that if couples like to spread out to opposite sides of the bed, they may not feel as supported as they do closer to the middle of the mattress.

Preference-based Features

Eco-Conscious Materials

If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly bed, the Douglas Summit is a great option. The company is based in Canada and doesn’t ship internationally, limiting their carbon footprint. Not only that, but according to their website, “Douglas Summit is built with sustainable Infinitex™ fibers and ecoLight® cooling gel foam, which requires up to 40% less carbon input to create (compared to high-density 4 lb memory foam).

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Douglas Summit bed is compatible with motorized and manually-adjustable bases.

365-night Trial

Douglas provides a 365-night trial period for their mattresses, so you have ample time to test out the Douglas Summit and decide if it is the right fit for you.

Construction: What’s Inside the Douglas Summit?

The Douglas Summit is a 12-inch mattress with three premium foam layers. The materials used to build this mattress are designed for optimal support, cooling, motion isolation, and comfort.

  • Below the pillow top, the Douglas Summit is topped with a CoolSense® mattress cover that is constructed with sustainable Infinitex™ thread interwoven with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres. This mattress cover is breathable and moisture-wicking. Not only that, but the CoolSense® cover is removable and machine washable, making it convenient to clean.
  • Going deeper, the next layer of the mattress is made of a 2.5-inch ecoLight® cooling gel foam that provides even more cooling, since gel helps keep a mattress cold. This foam layer also utilizes Polar® temperature balancing technology that keeps you warm in the winter and cold in the summer.
  • Below the gel foam layer, you’ll find a 2.5-inch premium Elastex® foam. This foam layer provides a mix of support and cushion. There is a balance of bounce and cradling in the Douglas Summit due to the premium Elastex® foam.
  • The last layer of this bed is a 7-inch motion isolation support foam that eliminates movement transfer from one side of the bed to the other. This motion isolation allows couples to sleep without disturbing one another. The 7 inches of foam at the base of the Douglas Summit provides even more support, stability, and durability for the bed.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Douglas Summit mattress is compressed and rolled into a box, and then it is shipped to your home. We found that the unboxing process was very easy. After you remove the bed from the packaging, the mattress will quickly expand. Once you unbox it, we recommend that you wait 24 hours before you sleep on the mattress, giving the bed enough time to fully decompress.

You may, however, smell a slight new-mattress scent, but it should go away within 24 hours.

Certifications

  • The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – The Douglas Summit is only sold in Canada, and shipping is free within Canada.
  • White-Glove Delivery – Douglas does not offer white-glove delivery for their products.
  • Trial – You can keep the Summit for 365 nights to make sure it’s your perfect mattress, and if it isn’t, the company will refund your money. However, Douglas requires that their customers sleep on the mattress for 30 nights before initiating a return.
  • Warranty – The warranty on this mattress lasts for 20 years.
  • Return Policy – If you want to return a Douglas bed, you need the original plastic covering to prepare the mattress to be picked up. Douglas will pick the mattress up from the original shipping destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What firmness level is the Douglas Summit mattress?

Our team gave the Douglas Summit mattress a 6 out of 10, which falls in the medium range based on our firmness scale.

Are you supposed to flip your Douglas mattress?

No, you are not supposed to flip your Douglas mattress.

Is the Douglas Summit mattress good for overweight people?

We do not recommend the Douglas Summit for heavier sleepers as this will likely be too soft for them, which can lead to pain and discomfort due to a lack of spinal support. Furthermore, heavier people may not like how much they sink into this mattress.

Can you sleep on a foam mattress right away?

Generally, you shouldn’t sleep on a foam mattress right away if it’s compressed and shipped in a box. This is because foam mattresses need time to expand to their full size and some made with synthetic materials like memory foam might emit a temporary off-gassing smell that could be bothersome to those sensitive to smells. In most cases, you should wait 24 hours before sleeping on your new foam mattress, though some brands may say you can sleep on them sooner or later than this timeline.

How do I set up my Douglas Summit mattress when it arrives?

To set up your mattress when it arrives, carry the box inside with the help of someone else. Cut the box open, lay it sideways, and take the bag out of the box. Next, place the bag on your base and cut the first layer of plastic off. Then you can unroll the mattress into its resting position. Cut the inner plastic off the mattress and slide it off. Then, wait 24 hours for the mattress to decompress before sleeping on it.

How often should I rotate my Douglas mattress?

You should rotate your Douglas mattress every four to six months, especially if one person who sleeps on the bed is significantly heavier or lighter than the other person. Just rotate the bed 180 degrees, so the head of the bed is now the foot of the bed. Rotating your mattress contributes to its longevity. However, do not flip your Douglas mattress.

What is the weight limit of the mattress?

The Douglas Summit mattress has a weight limit of 250 pounds per person, and a 500-pound total weight limit.
