Avocado is known for their luxurious, eco-friendly beds, bedding, and accessories. Their original, the Avocado Green, is one of the most popular eco-friendly beds on the market. However, with a starting price of over 1,300 dollars, it isn’t the most affordable bed for many people.
That’s why Avocado created the Eco. This bed boasts many of the same high-quality materials and durable construction as the Green but at a fraction of the price. In our in-depth review of the Avocado Eco, we’ll go over details like firmness, bounce, materials, construction, and more, so you can decide if this eco-friendly hybrid bed is the one for you.

Who We Recommend The Avocado Eco For:
- Hot sleepers – This latex hybrid mattress is an excellent fit for those who sleep hot since latex is naturally cooling and the coils will promote airflow through the bottom section of the mattress. This bed also uses cotton and wool, which are extremely breathable.
- Environmentally-conscious shoppers on a budget – Most organic mattresses have a higher price tag, but the Avocado Eco was designed to cost less, while still using organic and environmentally-friendly materials.
- Back and stomach sleepers – This mattress is on the firmer side, which makes it a better fit for stomach sleepers and some back sleepers who prefer a firm mattress.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Avocado Eco For:
- People who prefer memory foam beds – The Eco is made with both latex and innerspring coils, and these materials give this mattress a bouncy feel. If you love the sinking-in feeling of memory foam, though, you might want to opt for a memory foam mattress instead.
- Side sleepers – Side sleepers need a mattress on the softer side to cradle their shoulder and hip in this position. The Avocado Eco feels firm for most sleepers and will likely be too firm for side sleepers in particular.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7.5/10 (Firm)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

We rate mattresses between one and 10 on our Sleep Advisor firmness scale, in which 1 is soft as a cloud and 10 is extremely firm. The Avocado Eco rates at a 7.5 out of 10, which definitely puts it on the firmer end of things.
The coils have a supportive feel, and the top layer of latex does not have a whole lot of give to it. For heavyweight individuals, who will sink further into this mattress, the firmness and support should be a good fit; however, lightweight sleepers might find this bed to be too firm.
How Does It Feel?
When you lie down on the Avocado Eco, you will feel ‘on top of’ rather than ‘in’ the bed. The layer of latex and the coils in this bed give it an overall bouncy feel rather than an especially contouring one.
On top of the latex layer, there is a softer, more comfortable layer of wool. This will provide some cushioning, but the bed will still feel firm overall.
What We Like About the Avocado Eco
- It is bouncy – This can be an excellent fit for some sexually-active couples who prefer a bouncier bed or those who switch between stomach and back sleeping throughout the night.
- It’s affordable – Unlike many organic mattresses on the market, this one starts at 777 dollars.
- No off-gassing – Many bed-in-a-box beds come with a strong chemical smell immediately after unboxing. This one doesn’t because it uses organic and chemical-free materials.
Our Avocado Eco Complaints
- It will be too firm for many – Unless you are specifically looking for a firm mattress, this one probably won’t work for you.
- It doesn’t have the best edge support – This means when you sit or lie near the edge of the mattress, it will likely sink down. This makes it harder to use the full surface of the bed equally.
- It doesn’t have the best motion transfer – As a result, you may be able to feel your partner move during the night. However, because this is a bouncy bed, this isn’t too much of a surprise.
Testing the Avocado Eco Mattress: How it Performed
In order to find out who this mattress is best suited for, we tested out the Avocado Eco for specific features. These included: cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. We also lied on the mattress in different positions to test its performance in both support and pressure relief.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Avocado, the weight capacity of this mattress is 350 pounds per side of the bed – or no more than 700 pounds total. However, just because a mattress can support a certain amount of weight, that doesn’t mean it will be the best fit for all body types. You’ll also want to consider your go-to sleeping positions to determine whether a mattress is right for you.
Weight | Side Sleepers![]() | Back Sleepers![]() | Stomach Sleepers![]() |
---|---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ☆☆☆ | ★☆☆ | ★★★ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ☆☆☆ | ★★☆ | ★★★ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★★ | ★★☆ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – This mattress will likely be too firm for lightweight side sleepers, who won’t sink into it enough for any real pressure relief.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers will also probably find this mattress to be too firm, causing pressure on the hip and shoulder.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Some heavyweight side sleepers should be able to push down into the latex enough that this mattress will relieve pressure on the shoulder and hips.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – The Avocado Eco may feel too firm for lightweight back sleepers unless they prefer a very firm mattress.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers closer to 200 pounds or so may do well on the Avocado Eco, but people under 200 pounds may feel like their hips are being pushed up and out of the mattress, which won’t feel comfortable through the night.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers should be able to sink down into the latex enough that this bed will feel supportive and comfortable beneath the hips.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a firm bed that won’t compress beneath the hips. This one should be a good fit for lightweight stomach sleepers who love a firm bed.
- Average Weight Sleepers – The Eco should be an excellent fit for average-weight stomach sleepers. Their hips won’t sink too far down and their spine will remain in alignment.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers under 300 pounds should get plenty of support on this bed, though those who weigh more will likely need something more supportive for heavyweight bodies.
Pressure Relief & Pain
In general, the Avocado Eco may not be the best mattress for those specifically looking for great pressure relief. It doesn’t provide a whole lot of contouring or sinkage, qualities that deliver pressure relief on the joints.
As we covered in the previous section, though, this bed will work better for certain body types in specific sleep positions. Even though this isn’t the softest bed, it could provide great pain relief in certain positions.
Back Pain – Those with back pain will likely want to find a more medium-firm, rather than firm, mattress to sleep comfortably in most positions.
Hip Pain – Most side sleepers with hip pain should steer clear of this bed, as it will create pressure on the hip. However, stomach sleepers with hip pain may love this mattress; it is firm enough that it should keep the hips supported in this position for most sleepers.
Shoulder Pain – Side sleepers often experience shoulder pain when a mattress is too firm. For most sleepers under 300 pounds, this bed will likely exacerbate shoulder pain for side sleepers.
Support
When looking for a supportive mattress, you want one that won’t sag in certain areas, that will physically support your weight, and most importantly, keep your spine in neutral alignment.
The Avocado Eco is certainly firm and durable enough that it shouldn’t dip down while you’re sleeping. It should also be plenty supportive beneath your lumbar spine and hips to keep the spine properly aligned. That said, since it doesn’t have zoned support, it will be just as firm beneath your shoulders as your hips, which might feel too rigid on your side or even back.
This bed should feel most supportive for stomach sleepers and some back sleepers.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is an important quality for many sleepers who share a bed. Having a bed that is low in motion transfer (or that has good motion isolation) means you’re less likely to feel somebody else moving on the other side of the bed through the night.
Since the Avocado Eco contains both innerspring coils and natural latex, a naturally buoyant material, it doesn’t have the best motion isolation. If motion isolation is a top priority for you, you’ll likely do better with a memory foam mattress or one of our top picks for sensitive sleepers.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling
You’re probably aware that it’s much more difficult to sleep at night when you’re too warm, and this can lead to sleepless nights for some. That’s why it’s important to choose a great cooling mattress that won’t trap heat while you’re sleeping.
Many mattresses these days have plenty of advanced cooling technology, including gels and aerated foams, etc. The Avocado Eco, though, should keep you cool naturally. It does this with its natural latex, which is temperature-neutral, and its layer of innerspring coils, which allow for air to pass through the bed.
Performance for Couples
The Avocado Eco could be a good mattress for certain couples.
For those looking for a firm mattress that won’t trap heat at night, it’s an excellent fit. Sleeping next to someone can create extra warmth, so the cooling features should help. Plus, the high bounce of this mattress will be preferable for some sexually-active couples.
The bad news, though, is that with the high bounce comes more motion transfer. As a result, this won’t be the best bed for couples who are sensitive sleepers or have different sleep schedules.
Preference-based Features
High Bounce
People who change positions a lot or struggle with mobility typically prefer beds with some bounce to assist with movement. Sexually-active couples can also benefit from this feature.
Eco-Friendly
This bed is about as eco-friendly as they come, including 100 percent GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton, and no toxic chemicals, flame retardants, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams.

Adjustable Base Compatible
All Avocado mattresses will work on the Eco Adjustable Base, the Avocado Adjustable base, or third-party adjustable bases.
Construction: What’s Inside Avocado Eco?
The Avocado Eco is a bed-in-a-box, which means it will arrive on your doorstep, compressed into a box. The mattress will take some time to fully decompress and once it does, it will measure 10 inches tall (no matter which bed size you choose.)
The cover is made from a durable and breathable organic cotton, and the mattress itself is made up of three, eco-friendly layers.
- Beneath the cover, there is a layer of organic wool. This not only provides some cushion but acts as a natural flame retardant. This wool is GOTS-certified organic and feels breathable and surprisingly cool.
- Next is the bed’s comfort layer. It consists of a solid piece of Dunlop latex, sourced naturally from Avocado’s own farms in India and Guatemala. This layer feels bouncy but provides some slight contouring and won’t trap heat like memory foam does.
- The support layer at the bottom contains up to 988 pocketed steel coils that stand 8 inches high. These coils are made from recycled steel and are individually wrapped to create some motion isolation. These coils will also naturally promote airflow throughout the mattress, keeping you cool at night.
All the materials in this bed are non-toxic and include zero flame retardants, petroleum-based foams, fiberglass, or adhesives to bind the layers. In short, it doesn’t contain anything that could harm the environment – or you.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing
This bed-in-a-box is simple enough to unbox and unpack, but we recommend doing so with a friend as this mattress is heavy. For example, the Queen weighs 94 pounds.
All told, it should take you two about 10-15 minutes to completely unbox the bed and set it on its base. Since this mattress doesn’t include the chemicals that many bed-in-a-box mattresses do, you shouldn’t notice any chemical smell or off-gassing. This is good news because you won’t have to keep it in a well-ventilated room, and you will be able to dress and sleep on the bed immediately.

Overall Summary
The Avocado Eco is an affordable option for environmentally-conscious shoppers who love a firm mattress.

Side Sleepers
Petite and average-weight side sleepers will likely find this mattress a bit too firm to sleep comfortably. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds or so, may find that they get enough pressure relief on their shoulders and hips, though it’s still a firm bed.

Back Sleepers
For back sleepers who love a firm mattress, this is an excellent fit. Likely it will feel the most comfortable for average to heavyweight sleepers, as light sleepers won’t sink into its layers enough to feel very comfortable. For those who prefer a softer mattress, this one won’t be a good fit.

Stomach Sleepers
It can be hard to find a mattress that is supportive and firm enough for stomach sleepers, but the Avocado Eco does the trick. It should keep most body types well supported, without the hips dipping down and throwing the spine out of alignment.

Combination Sleepers
With its layer of coils and natural latex, this is a bouncy bed, which makes it easier for sleepers to change positions through the night. This is good news for combination sleepers. The only downside is, it may feel too firm for side sleeping.

Couples
Couples seeking a good amount of bounce will appreciate the Avocado Eco. It should also keep you cool at night, so there’s no need to worry about overheating next to your partner. However, it doesn’t have great motion isolation, and the firmer feel isn’t as versatile as a medium-firm model, which is often better for couples.

Heavy Sleepers
Most heavyweight sleepers should feel well supported on this firm bed especially those who sleep on their backs. Keep in mind, though, that the weight capacity for the Eco Organic is 350 pounds per side of the mattress, so folks who weigh more than this will want to opt for something specially made for plus-size sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers
Most lighter-than-average sleepers will likely find this bed to be too firm when sleeping on their backs and sides as they won’t sink into the layers of this mattress very well, and it will feel firmer for them. Lightweight stomach sleepers, though, should feel well-supported on this bed.

Average Weight Sleepers
Average-weight sleepers (people between 130 and 230 pounds) are a good fit for this bed if they prefer sleeping on their stomachs, or they’re a back sleeper who likes a firmer mattress. This is a particularly good fit for average-weight sleepers who love a bouncy and supportive bed, rather than a soft or deeply cradling bed.
Overall Value
Considering the quality of the organic and sustainably sourced materials in this bed and its durability and 10-year warranty, the Avocado Eco is an excellent value for the price. This is especially apparent when you compare it to similar organic beds on the market, which can cost thousands of dollars.
Our Verdict
It isn’t easy to find an environmentally-friendly, organic mattress that is also affordable, but the Avocado Eco is just that.
We think this is an excellent bed, crafted with the utmost respect for the planet, your safety, and your health. It is made with quality materials and comes with a warranty that should cover the lifetime of this mattress.
For those who love a firm-feeling bed and the bounciness of latex, this is an excellent choice. We also think this is a great match for stomach sleepers, though most side sleepers should look at a softer option.
