Our Helix Midnight vs. Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Bed Comparison for 2024

Shopping for a new mattress and unsure whether you’d suit a firm or soft bed? Today we’re comparing the slightly firmer hybrid Helix Midnight and the softer all-foam Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®. The TEMPUR-Adapt® comes in three variants, with the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® being the most luxurious and pressure-relieving option (as well as the most expensive). You can also choose between a Soft or Firm LuxeAdapt® – this review focuses on the Soft version.

As well as firmness, both beds provide differing levels of bounce, motion isolation, cooling, and edge support. So, if these factors are important to you, read on to see which mattress could give you the best sleep of your life.

Who I’d Recommend the Helix Midnight For

  • Back sleepers – With up to 950 coils in the innerspring unit, the Helix Midnight should offer exceptional support for back sleepers, keeping the lumbar area lifted and helping to prevent back pain.
  • Average-weight sleepers – Those weighing between 130 to 230 pounds should find a good balance of comfort and support from this mattress, though stomach sleepers weighing closer to 230 pounds may require more support.
  • Couples – With its cooling properties, high bounce, and great edge support, the Helix Midnight could be a good choice for couples. However, motion isolation isn’t as strong, which is something to consider if you have a restless partner.

Who I’d Recommend the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® For

  • Memory foam lovers – The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® offers that classic deep hug feel that memory foam is known for, thanks to multiple layers of Tempur® foam that envelop the sleeper.
  • Side sleepers – The exceptional pressure relief provided by this mattress could suit light and average-weight side sleepers, who should feel a deep, comforting hug around their shoulders and hips.
  • Lightweight people – People weighing less than 130 pounds tend to experience mattresses as a little firmer, so those who sleep on their back or side should get a great balance of cushioning and support from this mattress. However, stomach sleepers may prefer the Helix Midnight or the Firm version of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®.

Comparing Helix Midnight vs Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®: Top Similarities

  • Breathable cover – Both mattresses have breathable top covers that feel cool to the touch. The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® includes phase change material in its cover, which is designed to help further regulate body temperature.
  • Bed-in-a-box – The Helix Midnight and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® are both delivered compressed in a box, so you may experience some off-gassing. This is an unpleasant but harmless odor that’s the result of chemical byproducts escaping after being vacuum-packed.
  • Trial and warranty – Both beds come with 10-year limited warranties and similar trial periods; you have 100 nights to test out the Helix Midnight and 90 nights for the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®. These trials are shorter than many offered in the industry.

Comparing Helix Midnight vs Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®: Key Differences

  • Sizing options – The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® doesn’t come in Twin or Full sizes, while the Helix Midnight isn’t available in Split King or Split Cali-King. This may affect your final decision, depending on your requirements.
  • Edge support – The Helix Midnight features excellent edge support, thanks to reinforced coils at the lengthwise perimeter of the bed. Unfortunately, edge support is lacking on the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®, which may affect couples who need to use the entire surface area of the bed.
  • Price – The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® is definitely the more luxurious offering of the two, at 4,199 dollars for a Queen compared to 1,374 dollars for a Helix Midnight Queen.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Our firmness scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest. We found the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® to be a 5 out of 10, making it a softer mattress. These tend to be great choices for side sleepers, who need a bit of extra cushioning at the hips and shoulders. The Helix Midnight is firmer, at a 6 to 7 out of 10. This could suit back sleepers, who need additional support at the lower back and shoulders.

firmness for 5, 6 and 7

Support

The firmer Helix Midnight offers good support for back sleepers, thanks to its coil unit, which helps distribute weight evenly. However, heavyweight back sleepers over 230 pounds may find they sink too far into the foam layers, potentially requiring a firmer mattress.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® could be a good choice for light to average-weight side sleepers, who should experience a great balance of cushioning and support. We don’t recommend this for heavyweight sleepers, who will likely need a firmer mattress option, or one for plus-size sleepers.

Feel

The Helix Midnight has a stretchy cover that feels cool to the touch and well-constructed, making it incredibly durable. Lie down on the mattress, and you’ll experience gentle body contouring, with support provided by the transition layer beneath.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® has a much softer feel, offering a deeper hug. This could be good news for those with achy joints but may make some people feel like they’re stuck in the bed.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

If you’re looking for dramatic sinkage, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® may be the right choice for you, with its multiple layers of memory foam that offer incredible pressure relief. We think this level of sinkage is best for lightweight sleepers and average-weight side sleepers. However, one downside of this deeply cushioning bed is that it has virtually no bounce, which may affect those with limited mobility, as well as sexually-active couples.

The Helix Midnight has high bounce, thanks to the coil unit, so it may suit those sleepers better. The foam in this mattress offers a gentle cradle, which is likely ideal for average to heavyweight side sleepers and average-weight back sleepers.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is something to consider if you share your bed with a restless pet or partner. A mattress with good motion isolation is ideal in these circumstances, as it will stop movement transferring from one side of the bed to the other, preventing you from being disturbed.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® offers exceptional motion isolation, thanks to its slow-moving memory foam, which absorbs any movement. As expected, the hybrid Helix Midnight has higher motion transfer than the all-foam TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®, due to its springy coil unit. However, lightweight sleepers will likely experience better motion isolation on this mattress than their heavier counterparts, so it may not be an issue for them.

Comparing Cooling

If you tend to sleep hot or live in a warm climate, you’ll want to ensure your mattress has good cooling features to help you sleep more comfortably. The Helix Midnight offers superior cooling compared to the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®, as it has a breathable cover and a coil unit that promotes airflow and breathability. There’s also the option of upgrading to a GlacioTex cooling cover.

While the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® features phase change material in its cover, it still sleeps rather hot because of the many layers of heat-trapping foam. Softer foam with deeper sinkage prevents airflow between the body and the mattress, which can elevate body temperature.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Helix Midnight Construction

The 11.5-inch Helix Midnight hybrid mattress has a stretchy, soft, and breathable top cover, with durable stitching that should stand the test of time. This can be upgraded to a GlacioTex cooling cover for hot sleepers, which comes at an additional cost of 149 to 249 dollars, depending on mattress size.

layers of helix midnight
  • The comfort layer features Helix’s unique Memory Plus Foam, which is a high-density blend that’s designed to offer body contouring and comfortable pressure relief.
  • The transition layer is made from high-grade poly foam, which offers pressure relief and ergonomic support, and it helps ease you into the coil unit below.
  • The support layer features up to 950 individually-wrapped steel coils that help cradle the body and minimize motion transfer. Thicker-gauge coils are used on the left and right hand sides, offering lengthwise edge support.
  • The base layer has DuraDense foam, which provides durability and support for the rest of the mattress.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Construction

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® is a 13-inch all-foam mattress that starts with a polyester and phase change material cover, made with fibers that wick away heat, keeping it cool to the touch. This construction breakdown focuses on the Soft version of the bed (it’s also available in Firm).

layers of tempur-luxeadapt
  • Below the cover is the 3.5-inch comfort layer, made with Tempur-Pedic’s slow-moving TEMPUR-ES® memory foam, which stands for ‘extra soft’. This is designed to offer incredible sinkage and body contouring.
  • The contour layer is made up of just over 1-inch of TEMPUR-APR+™ memory foam, which stands for ‘advanced pressure relief’. The APR+™ version offers 30 percent more ultra-conforming comfort than the original APR™ material, thanks to a tighter cell structure.
  • A transition layer of poly foam gently eases the sleeper from the soft layers into the harder base beneath.
  • The base layer features high-density poly foam, providing support for the sleeper and stability for the rest of the mattress.

Comparing Company Policies & Price

  • Warranty – Both beds come with a 10-year limited warranty.
  • Shipping – The Helix Midnight ships for free across the U.S., and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® ships for free in the U.S., with additional charges for remote locations and Alaska/Hawaii. White glove delivery is offered for free with the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®.
  • Trial Period – The Helix Midnight has a 100-night trial, while the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® has a slightly shorter 90-night trial.
  • Returns – Both mattresses can be returned for free within the trial period, with full refunds, with the exception of any shipping charges.
  • Price – The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® costs significantly more than the Helix Midnight, which would better suit customers on a smaller budget.

Final Thoughts

With its slightly firmer feel, we recommend the Helix Midnight for average-weight sleepers, especially those who sleep on their back. Heavyweight side sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers may also find this a good fit. The softer Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® could be great for light to average-weight side sleepers, who will likely enjoy the deep sinkage and pressure relief.

Sexually-active couples and those needing to spread out may prefer the high bounce and great edge support on the Helix Midnight, while light sleepers with restless partners could appreciate the fantastic motion isolation of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®.

However, if a lower price is your main concern, then the Helix Midnight comes out on top.
