Sarah CummingsI love to sleep. There, I got that off my chest. If I don’t get at least 7 hours every night, I’m a little bit grumpy the next day, and a “little bit” grumpy, my friends might say, just like the Titanic had a “little bit” of a hole in it.

Beyond my 7 hours, I also believe in harnessing the power of a good power nap. I find that a 30-minute snooze after lunch works as well for me as three strong espressos do for other people. And I don’t get the horrible caffeine shakes because of it, so bonus!

I wasn’t always this way. I used to think napping was for older folks and cats, but now that I’m a bit older (and hopefully wiser!), I get my Vitamin Zzzs, and I consider it central to our well-being. When we sleep well, we feel healthier, more positive, and more creative.

Sleeping helps me live my best life, and for me that means cycling. Almost every day, I’ll get the bike out and give my legs a good workout up and down the winding countryside paths. If I’m not sleeping or writing about sleep, I’m probably on the road somewhere, enjoying the fresh air.

I’ve also recently fallen in love with audiobooks, so I pop my headphones on while I cycle and listen to a chapter or two of my favorite authors while I’m on my journey. I’ve been known, if the story is really good, to take another loop before going home!

Over the years of cycling, I’ve definitely developed a lot of strength in my legs but the flexibility of a woman four times my age. To counteract that, I’ve recently taken up Yoga. I know I’m late to the game but better late than never, and I’m hoping a few downward dogs and side planks will help limber me up some.

Since we’re in the mood to confess everything, my colleagues at Sleep Advisor might also call me a bit of a neat freak. I admit that this is true. My office is spotless, my desktop is well ordered, and I love a good spreadsheet.

There’s something about organizing a chaotic set of information into neat little rows that helps me relax. Maybe it’s because the world is such a crazy muddled up place that I like being able to control my small section of it. If that makes me a nerd, so be it!
