Why the Nectar Premier Earned Best Mattress for Snoring Overall

The Nectar Premier is an all-foam bed that wowed my fellow testers. It’s an advantageous pick for snorers, as it has a versatile medium-firm feel that should keep you cozy without letting you sink too low (and thereby interfering with your breathing). What’s more, it has more cooling features than the original Nectar.

“I like that it just really conformed to my body while giving me the support that I need, as someone who’s a bit heavier,” said Mark. Emma agreed that it hit the sweet spot between softness and support, and praised its “cool-to-the-touch” cover.

What’s the Nectar Premier Made Of?

The Nectar Premier is 13 inches tall and has five layers, including its top and bottom cover.

Its design starts with a cooling top cover that draws the heat away from the body. Beneath is a 3-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, which molds to your silhouette and absorbs pressure that might otherwise accumulate around sensitive areas.

This layer also has a cooling component: ActiveCool phase change material. When your body temperature rises, the material should help to siphon off the unwanted heat.

Looking at the Nectar Premier Hybrid Construction
Take a closer look at the Nectar Premier mattress construction.

Next is a 3-inch layer of responsive foam that lends just a little bit of bounce to the bed and assists with motion isolation. It’s followed by a sturdy 7-inch base layer of ActiveSupport foam.

Finally, surrounding the lower portion of the mattress is a fabric cover that keeps all of the layers intact and in line.

Our Take: “The Nectar Premier is the company’s luxury sleep option, with all the things shoppers love about the original Nectar, but with enhanced comfort and cooling features.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Cancels out motion – If you’re already sensitive to snoring, the last thing you want is to be woken up by your partner’s movements, too. Thankfully, the Nectar Premier has stellar motion isolation—you shouldn’t feel too many disturbances from your partner or pets.
  • Quite cool for foam – Emma loved how cool this mattress felt, which was something of a surprise given its construction. “I experience that traditional memory foam feel, but without overheating,” she said.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not bouncy –  “[The] Nectar Premier doesn’t have much bounce, so if you’re looking for a bed that will make repositioning easier, this might not be the right fit for you,” Emma cautioned. Hybrids will generally have more responsiveness than all-foam beds like this one.
  • Not firm enough for some – The Nectar Premier has an initially plush surface, so you won’t feel like you’re being completely elevated on top of the bed. Stomach sleepers and heavy people who snore may find themselves craving a firmer foundation.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar Premier Hybrid

On Nectar’s website, this mattress scored a 4.7 out of 5 stars, from 341 reviews. The Nectar Hybrid mattress, favored by customers for its affordability and pressure relief, has received some complaints about off-gassing odors upon unboxing.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Mattress for Back Sleepers Who Snore

Back sleepers often find themselves more prone to snoring than people who sleep on their sides or stomachs. This position can cause your tongue and palate to interfere with your airway, so it’s especially important to keep your head and neck aligned and well-lifted on your mattress.

The Helix Midnight can help—it’s a hybrid bed that won’t sink too much under a back sleeper’s key pressure points. “On my back, I feel really comfortable and evenly supported. I like how the foams feel soft, but not too soft, like I’m sinking in and getting stuck,” said Emma.

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?

The Helix Midnight has six total layers and measures 11.5 inches tall. At the top is a standard soft and stretchy cover, but you can replace it with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover for an additional fee.

The first comfort layer is made of Memory Plus Foam, a proprietary Helix material that contours along the rise and fall of your body’s curves.

It’s followed by two layers of springy Helix Responsive Foam: one that provides further pressure relief, and a slightly firmer second one that offers support and a protective buffer above the coil unit.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction
The layers of the Helix Midnight.

The innerspring unit in the Midnight consists of individually wrapped coils. On the long sides of the bed, the springs are stronger on the outside edges to prevent too much dipping.

At the base of the mattress is a layer of DuraDense foam for stability and longevity.

Our Take: “This bed performs great for back sleepers. The mix of comfort and support is just right. And the medium-soft feel is a great choice if you love to sleep on your back.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Reposition all you like – Sometimes, snoring can be stopped with a simple change in sleeping position, and the Helix Midnight makes this easy. “It definitely has good response and bounce. I can move and adjust positions, no problem,” said Emma.
  • Isolates motion well – For a hybrid bed, the Midnight got high marks in motion cancellation during testing. Its upper foam layers seem to prevent major ripples from traveling across its surface.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Won’t cradle you – “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you,” Emma advised. The Midnight buoys you atop its construction, rather than allowing you to sink somewhat.
  • Not recommended for stomach sleepers – While lying on her stomach, Emma felt that her hips weren’t as supported as she would like them to be. “I’m still decently comfortable,” she said, “but I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers.”

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Mattress for Back Pain and Snoring

Luckily, sore backs and snoring can be addressed with some of the same mattress features, and the Saatva Classic has all of them: support, responsiveness, and a medium-firm hybrid feel.

It’s of the best mattresses out there if you’re looking for lumbar support, which is often a crucial factor in lessening back pain. Its two separate innerspring units also give this bed killer responsiveness and ensure that you won’t feel stuck while lying on it—big pluses for snorers who shift throughout the night.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic can be ordered in two heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. It’s also available in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.

The first layer of the bed is a luxurious 3-inch pillow top, complete with an organic cotton cover. The foam inside the pillow top is designed for pressure relief, but the quilting around it firms up around the lower back for added support.

Underneath is a strip of memory foam—what Saatva calls a “crown”—that only occupies the middle third of the bed, right where most people’s lumbar spine will be. This layer contours to this sensitive area for extra pressure relief and lift.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress
The Saatva uses both coils and foam in its construction.

Next is the first coil unit: a series of individually wrapped springs that are stronger under the same lumbar region. They’re braced underneath by the second coil unit, which features interconnected springs for sturdy support and durability. Within these coils you’ll find a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire that further braces the mattress beneath the lower back.

Around its layers, the Saatva Classic has a perimeter of high-density foam that makes the edges extremely strong.

My Take: The Saatva Classic is a hybrid of foam and coils, but the build is a little bit different than other hybrids out there. Those double innerspring units make it an exceptional bed.

What I Liked

  • Lovely lifted feeling – The two coil units in this bed really elevated my midsection and made me feel pleasantly lifted. I was in no danger of sinking too low or having my spine misaligned.
  • Customizability – No matter what sleeping position (or mattress height!) strikes your fancy, you can probably order a Saatva Classic to suit you. For snorers, I’d recommend the Luxury Firm or Firm versions to avoid too much sinking around the head and neck.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Doesn’t cool you down – I was very comfortable while testing the Saatva Classic, but didn’t notice a drop in temperature that would prompt me to label it a cooling mattress.
  • Some motion transfers – You can’t really place two spring units in a bed and then expect it to isolate motion perfectly. Movement does travel across this mattress, so light sleepers should be mindful when considering it.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva mattress

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Nolah Natural Earned Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Snoring

The Nolah Natural is full of components that resist common allergens, as well as organic materials. It’s a hybrid bed that derives its pressure-relieving properties and bounce from Talalay latex, an innately hypoallergenic foam.

As for its anti-snoring credentials, this mattress has a medium firmness level that should support the head and neck well. Its defenses against allergens can also aid in snoring prevention—a stuffed-up nose is definitely more likely to make noise!

What’s the Nolah Natural Made Of?

The Nolah Natural is 11 inches thick and has seven layers if you include its organic cotton top and bottom covers.

Underneath is a layer of GOTS-certified organic wool, which functions as a fire retardant. Next up, a comfort layer of Talalay latex adds springiness and cushion. A subsequent layer of firmer Talalay latex braces the softer layer above and protects you from feeling the coil unit below.

Nolah Natural Construction

The springs in this bed are individually wrapped and split into three support zones for customized resistance under different parts of the body. The coil unit takes up 8 inches of height. It segues into a base layer of organic wool and cotton.

Our Take: Eco-friendly shoppers should appreciate all the consideration that went into choosing the Nolah Natural’s materials. With two separate layers of latex and a zoned coil system, we think it goes above and beyond what you might expect from the average “natural” bed.

What We Liked

  • Latex lovers rejoice – The Talalay latex in this bed has been hole-punched for enhanced cooling, and was even manufactured with the earth in mind. Nolah says that they use biodegradable materials such as plain air and water to process their latex foam.
  • Bounce away – This is a very responsive bed. The latex and springs combine to lend it lots of bounce, so combination sleepers and sexually active couples should love how it faciliates easy movement.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Doesn’t isolate motion well – Springy latex and responsive coils make it easy for movement to travel across the surface of this bed.
  • Not built for heavier folks – Although this bed feels medium-firm to most folks, plus-size sleepers may want a bed with an even firmer, more supportive feel.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Natural

On Nolah’s website, the Nolah Natural gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Nolah Natural mattress for its eco-friendly materials and pressure relief, but some have reported a minimal initial off-gassing odor upon setup.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Cheap Mattress for Snoring

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a highly affordable mattress with the right type of feel to help with snoring. According to my fellow tester, Emma, it’s pleasantly firm and “very supportive, which is great for back and stomach sleepers. It almost feels like the bed is lifting me up.” That kind of elevated feel should prevent your head from sinking too low and exacerbating your snoring.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is 12.25 inches tall and has five layers. It’s also available in three firmnesses: Soft, Medium, or Firm.

At the surface of the bed is a quilted, breathable top. If you pay a bit extra, you can augment it with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover and additional pillow top foam.

It’s followed by a layer of comfort foam that’s designed to be responsive and springy. Underneath is a layer of VariFlex™ foam, which offers a bit more support and serves as a transitional layer before the spring unit.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab
Deep Dive into the Signature Hybrid mattress construction.

The 8-inch coils in this bed are individually wrapped and stronger along the edges. They rest on top of a high-density foam base.

Our Take: “If you’re looking for a basic bed that does the job well, this is it.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Good for tossing and turning – Emma, a combination sleeper herself, valued the responsiveness of this bed. “It’s really bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy for me to flip from my stomach to my side,” she said.
  • Sturdy edges – “The edges of this bed hold up great,” Emma reported. “I can lay right on the edge without feeling like I’m going to fall out.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too firm for side sleepers – Emma felt some pressure around her hips and shoulders when she stayed on her side on top of this mattress. “If I exclusively slept on my side, I’d probably choose a softer bed,” she concluded. “But it shouldn’t be a problem for combo sleepers.”
  • It’s simple – This hybrid doesn’t have a ton of bonus features or fancy new technology. But, according to Emma, “it’s a pretty solid bed for the price that you’re paying.”

Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Layla Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers Who Snore

Flippable mattresses allow you to choose between two different firmnesses each night. The Layla mattress is a great fit for side sleepers in particular, as its memory foam construction will always cradle your pressure points, but it also enables you to go plusher or firmer as your tastes shift.

“The soft side of the mattress has a more swaddling feel,” said Stuart. On the firmer side, he felt more lifted atop the bed. Side sleepers who snore should appreciate this versatility—if they suspect they’ll need some “propping up” to prevent snoring on a given night, they can opt for the firm side. But if they’re craving more cushion and feel like the risk of snoring is minimal, the soft side may feel better.

What’s the Layla Mattress Made Of?

The Layla is 10.5 inches tall and has six layers if you count its top and bottom covers. Both of those covers should help regulate temperature and are decorated with hexagons—white and gray for the soft side, black and gray for the firmer side.

Underneath each cover is a layer of copper-gel memory foam. It’ll feel slightly plusher on the soft side, but regardless of the side you choose, the copper inside this foam should assist with cooling and shield your bed from microbes. It also “firms up” under weightier areas, responding with what the brand calls “Variable Support.”

Layla Mattress Construction

The soft side of the mattress has another layer of comfort foam beneath the copper-gel memory foam. This “Max Airflow Support Foam” is cut with channels for even more cooling, and zoned to provide different levels of resistance to different parts of the body.

Finally, in the middle of the bed, a sturdy foam core helps to isolate motion and keep the mattress durable.

Our Take: “The Layla is infused with copper, which makes the foam in the mattress even more responsive. So it really feels like the mattress is adapting to your body.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Flip to change the feel – With the Layla, “you can totally customize your sleep depending on how you’re feeling,” said Stuart. Both he and another tester, Liz, were charmed by this feature. “The versatility and the option to be able to choose between firm and soft is amazing,” Liz said.
  • Isolates motion very well – “Jump up and down, dance a little, feel free to wiggle all you want, and you’re never going to bother your partner while they sleep,” Stuart reported.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Might be too soft for some people – Stuart found that changing positions was a little more difficult on the plush side of the bed. Both he and Liz also agreed that stomach sleepers will probably need a more supportive mattress.
  • Edges could be stronger – The edges on the Layla don’t have much reinforcement, and Stuart noted that if you sleep right up on the side, you may feel some buckling.

Customer Reviews of the Layla

On the Layla site, the Layla has an overall 4.5 out of 5 stars. One potential drawback of the Layla Original mattress is that its flippable design might not be as convenient for customers who prefer a fixed firmness, but it provides versatile comfort options with both soft and firm sides to choose from.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Eco-Friendly Mattress for Snoring

In testing the Birch Natural, my colleague Stuart harped on its responsiveness and bounce—qualities you might want in a bed if you snore, as they make it easier to change position and quiet your breathing.

As its name suggests, the Birch Natural is also an eco-friendly mattress. The entire bed has been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, and contains a natural wool alternative to synthetic fire protection.

What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?

The Birch Natural is 11 inches tall with five internal layers under its organic cotton cover. The first and second layers are both made of organic wool, which stands in for synthetic fire retardants as a safety measure. The wool is both strong and springy, and Birch can track it back to the precise farm that supplied it.

Next is a layer of natural Talalay latex, a responsive and hypoallergenic foam derived from the sap of rubber trees. Latex tends to run cooler than memory foam while boasting similar pressure-relieving properties.

Under the latex is the bed’s spring unit, with pocketed coils made from domestically manufactured steel. The springs are reinforced on the long sides for palpable edge support.

Finally, a base layer of wool gives the bed added sturdiness and fire protection.

Our Take: “The organic cotton cover is soft to the touch, and the wool layers are comfortable and cozy to lie down on … I really appreciate the way the latex and coils respond to my movements, helping me to switch positions easier without feeling stuck in the bed.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Pleasantly firm – The Birch Natural has the ideal feel for back pain: a middle-of-the-road firmness that lifts the body. “I feel more like I’m sleeping on this bed rather than sinking into it,” said Stuart.
  • Secure edges – “I’m also a huge fan of the reinforced edge support,” Stuart remarked. “It feels like I can really utilize the entire mattress.” This feature can be especially important to sexually active couples or people who spread out a lot during sleep.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s on the firmer side – This mattress isn’t particularly plush, and side sleepers may not get enough pressure relief from its comfort layers. Stuart recommended taking a look at mattress toppers if you’d like to buy this bed for its organic components, but want a softer surface.
  • It won’t isolate motion – This is a bouncy bed, so you get a lovely, springy feel at the cost of motion isolation. Very light sleepers may be woken up by their partner’s movements on the Birch Natural.

Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural

According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

Why the Plank Earned Best Firm Mattress for Snoring

The Plank is a mattress inspired by mat-like beds and, well, planks. It’s extremely firm, and for some snorers, that’s a blessing—it can help to keep your head lifted and your airway open. Its firmness also lends itself well to repositioning, as you won’t ever feel stuck or sunk into its layers.

Oh, and did we mention it’s flippable? It has a firm side and an “ultra-firm” side, for when you really need an incredibly bracing sleep surface.

What’s the Plank Made Of?

The Plank is a relatively thin mattress at 9.5 inches tall, and it has four layers.

On either side, it begins with a 0.75-inch quilted top layer. The Extra-Firm side’s top has no loft to it and feels perfectly flat. The Firm side has a bit of loft for the slightest cushion.

Underneath the Firm side’s top is a 2-inch layer of TitanFlex™ foam. Although this foam should mold to your curves, it’s designed to be more responsive than pillowy.

A 6-inch core of high-density foam pads out the mattress’s middle.

Plank Mattress Construction
Look at the Plank mattress construction.

My Take: The Plank is in a firmness league of its own. I recommend it for back, stomach, and plus-size sleepers who need a lot of support and don’t like to feel at all cradled by their beds.

What I Liked

  • Flippable means flexible – Although both sides of the Plank are quite firm, having the ability to choose between them can be lovely for indecisive folks, or people who find themselves craving a truly floor-like feel only sporadically.
  • Unparalleled support – Your spine should feel well-aligned when you’re on this mattress, and it’s supportive enough for plus-size people and stomach sleepers—two groups that often struggle to find the firmness they need from a bed.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Very, very firm –  The Plank is so firm that many people may find it simply uncomfortable. I don’t think side sleepers will love it, as their hips and shoulders are likely to feel lots of pressure.
  • Cooling costs extra – You can add a GlacioTex™ cooling cover to both sides of the Plank, but you’ll have to shell out some extra money to do so.

Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm

On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Why the Titan Plus Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People Who Snore

When developing an even more luxurious version of the Titan Plus, the folks at Titan considered the most common issues experienced by heavy people: mattresses that sag in the middle, uneven support, not enough reinforcement along the edges, and more. The Titan Plus Luxe addresses each of these problems—and its comfort enhancements may help to mitigate snoring, in turn.

One of the key differences between this model and its predecessor is an embedded sheet of Energex™ foam. This one-inch layer boosts the bed’s support as well as its pressure-relieving properties, serving as the perfect transition into the 8-inch TitanCaliber™ coil unit.

What’s the Titan Plus Luxe Made Of?

The Titan Plus Luxe has five layers and measures 13 inches tall. It begins with a 1-inch quilted top of gel foam that cushions the body while resisting heat buildup. For an extra fee, however, you can augment this top with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover.

Next is a 2-inch layer of TitanFlex™ foam, a material designed for responsiveness as well as pressure relief. It’s followed by a 1-inch sheet of Energex™ foam that adds a transitional support layer between the foams above and the springs below.

An 8-inch innerspring unit of 13.5-gauge coils provides crucial lift. The coils along the edges have a higher gauge and are positioned in a double row for reliable edge support. Finally, the base of the bed consists of a 1-inch layer of high-density foam.

Look Closer at the TitanFlex foam in the Luxe mattress

Our Take: “If you’re a heavier or extra-tall individual like myself, the Titan Plus Luxe mattress is your best friend … if mattresses could be best friends.” – Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Comfortable but strong – My fellow tester Sean really appreciated this mattress’s balance of pleasant softness to secure support. “It was soft, but not too soft. I never felt like I was stuck or that I was sinking into the bed,” he said. “Even better, this had all the support I’ll ever need from a bed.”
  • Cool while you sleep – Airflow from the bed’s springs and cooling infusions in the first two layers of foam work together to keep the temperature cozy. Sean described this bed as “cool to the touch” during testing as well.

Potential Drawbacks

  • On the firmer side – “This still may be too firm for some folks,” Sean warned. Although our testers loved how versatile it was, very lightweight sleepers or folks who value a ton of cushion may not be its biggest fans.
  • Heavy to lift – Sean recommended that you find help before trying to move this bed, because “it can be a bit of a beast … especially if you’re going up stairs with it.

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus Luxe

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Puffy Cloud Earned Best Foam Mattress for Snoring

People looking for an all-foam mattress should consider the Puffy Cloud, as it has multiple cooling elements, a stain-resistant cover, a lifetime warranty, and a 101-night trial. The mattress also comes with a hypoallergenic cover that helps keep the dust mites and allergens away. This feature, combined with a medium-firm feel that keeps your head from sinking, may reduce the severity of your snoring.

What’s the Puffy Cloud Made Of?

The Puffy Cloud is 10 inches tall and has five layers, beginning with its cloud-patterned hypoallergenic cover.

Under the cover is a 2-inch layer of Cooling Cloud™ Foam infused with gel. This cradles the body to relieve pressure in the joints regardless of your preferred sleeping position. Next come 2 inches of Climate Comfort™ Foam added for temperature regulation and airflow, which should further help hot sleepers.

A 6-inch “core” of high-density foam gives the mattress its primary source of support and motion isolation. The core and the foam layers above are held in place by a lower cover that prevents the bed from sliding on its frame or foundation.

My Take: The Puffy Cloud isn’t as plush as its name suggests, but I think that’s a feature, not a bug. Its supportive base is great for spinal alignment on your side while the softer foams on top give you some cozy cushioning.

What I Liked

  • Nice on the side and stomach – Both stomach- and side-sleepers should find a healthy amount of plushness plus support from this bed. As a stomach sleeper, I was surprised at how lifted it kept my lumbar region.
  • Keeps motion to a minimum – Like most all-foam beds, the Puffy Cloud limits motion transfer quite well. Light sleepers who get woken up by movement could benefit from trying it out.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Lackluster on the back – Strangely, I wasn’t wowed by how this bed felt while lying on my back. I didn’t feel quite enough cushion, though my spine was well-aligned.
  • Cooling isn’t very noticeable – There are multiple cooling foams inside this bed, but I didn’t feel any of them actively working to lower the temperature as I tested it. That doesn’t mean they aren’t effective, just that I didn’t perceive the effect during my brief encounter with the mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Puffy Cloud

The Puffy Cloud rates 4.9 out of 5 on Puffy’s website. Customers often praise the Puffy Cloud mattress for its plush comfort and excellent motion isolation, but some have mentioned it might be too soft for those who prefer a firmer feel.

What to Look for in a Mattress for Snoring

As many as 90 million people1 snore on occasion. Not only can it be frustrating for a co-sleeper, but it can also lead to inadequate sleep. A lack of quality rest can lead to daytime grogginess, and it can even make you prone to cardiovascular problems, obesity, and increased stress1. Additionally, severe cases of snoring may indicate that you have obstructive sleep apnea2, a condition that can be fatal if left untreated.

One step you can take to prevent or reduce snoring is buying a quality mattress. However, there are certain features that you will want to keep your eye on before you make your purchase.

Type of Mattress

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials

Innerspring Mattresses

Traditional or innerspring mattresses are what many people slept on when they were kids. While there are additional types of mattresses available now, that doesn’t mean innerspring mattresses don’t have a lot to offer.

The construction of these mattresses allows for increased airflow, which helps keep sleepers cool. Additionally, innerspring mattresses are one of the least expensive options. The downside to innerspring beds, though, is a lack of pressure relief because they usually have a thin comfort layer.

Hybrid Mattresses

To help solve the dilemma of minimal pressure relief with an innerspring bed, consider a hybrid. These mattresses still have the advantages of an innerspring unit but also have several layers of foam on top to tackle pressure buildup.

The downside to hybrid mattresses is their price tag, but the enhanced construction could be worth it for more comfortable sleep.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction
The hybrid construction of the Helix Midnight mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are beloved for their ability to contour a person’s body to mitigate pressure buildup. Plus, many memory foam beds are more budget-friendly, and you can find plenty of selections online from top manufacturers.

Memory foam’s downside is that it also traps heat, but many mattress brands address this issue by adding cooling properties to their foam, such as gel infusions or an open-cell design.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses have many great advantages for shoppers; they’re durable, eco-friendly, responsive, and cooling. They’re also a great alternative to memory foam because they can still relieve pressure but have the temperature regulation and responsiveness that traditional memory foam lacks.

Like hybrids, latex beds are more costly. However, their durability makes them a smart investment, and if you want a bed that’s better for the planet, natural and organic latex mattresses are the way to go.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Snoring

Sleeping Position

Back sleepers are usually best suited for beds that provide robust spinal support but also deliver considerable pressure relief around their shoulders and lower back. Side sleepers, on the other hand, should consider a mattress that provides gentle contouring to their hips and shoulders, as well as a sturdy foundation that prohibits them from sinking too far down.

A firmer mattress that can keep stomach sleepers‘ hips lifted so that their lower back doesn’t arch, which could result in pain in this area. Lastly, combination sleepers should focus on mattresses that have a nice balance of support and pressure relief for multiple positions but also have enough buoyancy to help them change positions easily.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

A sleeper’s weight and body type have a big impact on the type of mattress that works best for them. Weight also plays a role in how likely you are to snore, as snoring is linked to being overweight and obese3.

Heavier people will want a supportive, firm mattress that will prevent them from sinking too far into it, which could compromise their spinal alignment and make them uncomfortable. This is particularly true for heavyweight back sleepers. If these sleepers don’t have enough support they may sink too far down in the mattress, which could cause their airways to further close and this may make their snoring worse.

Average-weight sleepers should look to medium-firm beds as these are generally most accommodating for this weight group. Petite sleepers are often most comfortable on a softer mattress. This is because lighter-weight individuals won’t sink into a bed as much so they’ll need something already soft so they don’t feel like they’re lying on a rigid surface.

Firmness

The right mattress firmness is connected to both your sleep position and body type. We rate mattresses on a firmness scale of 1-10, with 10 being the absolute firmest feel. Most mattresses fall between a 5 and 7, and we don’t recommend beds below a 4 firmness rating because this would be much too soft for anyone to get decent support. Also, how firm a bed feels will depend on your weight.

Generally speaking, softer beds are going to be best for side sleepers and lightweight people. Medium-firm mattresses are most beneficial to back sleepers and average-weight people. Lastly, firm mattresses are usually ideal for stomach sleepers and heavier people.

Cooling

For those dealing with snoring, sleeping on a cooling mattress may help as sleepers have reported they sleep better4 when they are cool.

Memory foam tends to be the warmest mattress type because the material’s density makes it more difficult for air to circulate, resulting in heat getting trapped. However, many manufacturers have started infusing their foam with gel or implementing other cooling technologies that help regulate the bed’s overall temperature.

Latex has an open-cell structure that helps keep it cool. Additionally, the coils in both innerspring and hybrid mattresses promote airflow throughout the mattress.

Motion Isolation

A bed with good motion isolation can be an important feature for those who share a bed with a partner or pet. If your sleep is already being disturbed by a co-sleeper’s snoring, you won’t want their restlessness to be another nightly obstacle you need to overcome. Therefore, a mattress that prevents movement from transferring to other parts of the bed can be beneficial for these people.

motion testing for brooklyn bedding signature hybrid
Testing the motion isolation of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress.

Memory foam is known for absorbing motion and can make for an excellent mattress for couples. Conversely, latex and innerspring models are the worst performers for motion isolation. That said, if you like your bed to still have a bit of bounce but not too much that it compromises motion isolation, then we’d recommend a hybrid with memory foam. Also, make sure the hybrid has pocketed coils specifically, which are better are dampening motion transfer.

Sex

Excellent mattresses for sex are responsive and provide plenty of bounce. The reason for this is that these features help keep you from feeling stuck in the mattress, allowing you to reposition more easily.

For sexually active couples, we usually recommend latex, hybrid, or innerspring beds since they offer plenty of bounce to facilitate movement during intimacy. On the flip side, memory foam’s slow-moving nature can make it less conducive to sex. However, a memory foam hybrid could be a good compromise.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is going to be an important asset in a mattress, especially for side sleepers since they’re even more prone to pressure buildup. This is because their weight is concentrated in a smaller area.

To ensure you get adequate pressure relief, you’ll want a mattress that has an ideal firmness for both your body type and sleep position. Also, you should make sure it’s built with pressure-relieving comfort layers. Of course, memory foam is excellent for this, but latex can do a great job of alleviating pressure as well.

Edge Support

Edge support is a mattress’ ability to support your weight around the perimeter of the bed. Beds that lack this feature make it difficult to utilize the entire surface area because sleepers may feel that they are going to roll off if they sleep on the edge.

Not feeling secure around the edges of the bed could be problematic for couples as it may cause them to gravitate towards the middle of the mattress, making the bed feel much smaller. Solid edge support can also help those with mobility issues get in and out of the bed more easily.

With innerspring and hybrid mattresses, look for beds that have higher gauge coils around the edges. Memory foam mattresses can also have good edge support. This is typically accomplished by adding higher-density foam along the outside.

Budget

When it comes to bigger-ticket items such as mattresses, almost everyone needs to be mindful of how much they can comfortably spend. Having a budget in mind also allows you to narrow down the beds you like that fit within your price range.

The upside for consumers is that the competition within the marketplace means that you can find affordable mattresses that are still well-made. Generally speaking, latex and hybrid models will cost more than innerspring and memory foam options, though this also depends on the particular brand and model.

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring occurs when the tissues of the upper airway begin to vibrate while you’re breathing during sleep. If you’re snoring, it may mean you are experiencing obstructed breathing. This can occur because of poor muscle tone in the throat, a longer uvula or soft palate, or obstructed nasal airways.1

Additional factors that can increase your risk of snoring include1:

  • Advanced age
  • Alcohol and sedative use
  • Enlarged adenoids or tonsils
  • Deviated septum in the nose
  • Family history of snoring
  • Nasal congestion and allergies
  • Overweight
  • Pregnancy

We don’t snore while we are awake because the muscles in our throat are in use and this allows air to move through smoothly. Age increases our chances of snoring because muscles become less toned, and being overweight may cause fat deposits to build up in the tissues of the airway, which can cause airflow obstruction.

While snoring itself may not always be a health issue, it can be an indicator that you or your partner have obstructive sleep apnea5 .

How Can a Mattress Help with Snoring?

One of the recommended ways to help with snoring is to adjust your sleep position, which we will detail below. In this regard, a mattress could help with snoring by providing a sleep space that makes adjusting your sleep position an easier process.

What is the Best Sleeping Position for Snoring?

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

Back Sleeping

If possible, avoid sleeping on your backif you snore. This is because when you sleep on your back, your airways can relax or even collapse, making it harder for air to pass through freely.

Side Sleeping

Sleeping on your side can help the airways stay open, and this can keep air flowing freely, which can reduce your snoring.6 Side sleepers typically find comfort on mattresses with contouring materials that can reduce the pressure around their hips and shoulders.

Combination Sleeping

Stomach and side combination sleepers are less likely to snore than those who sleep on their backs for at least a portion of the night. If you are a combination sleeper, you may want to look for a responsive bed, such as one made from latex or coils, as this will help you reposition during the night.

Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping is another recommended position for snorers.6 If you sleep on your stomach, you will want to find a firmer, supported bed that will keep your hips lifted for optimal spine alignment.

Tips for Better Sleeping with Snoring

  • Avoid activities that cause snoring – A great place to start is not engaging in activities that lead to snoring, such as drinking alcohol or taking any medications that may cause drowsiness.

If you’re a smoker, it is best to try quitting to help rid yourself of snoring7. If you have allergies and are consistently congested, work to eliminate allergens8 in your home, and wash household fabrics frequently.

  • Adjust your sleep position – As mentioned, stomach and side sleeping are considered the better positions for those who snore.6 With that in mind, we advise getting a mattress that’s going to accommodate either of these positions well.
  • Use an adjustable base – Using an adjustable bed frame with your mattress is one way to help reduce or eliminate snoring, particularly for those who want to remain sleeping on their back. By raising your head when you sleep, you may be less likely to snore because the elevation can clear your airway and nasal passages making them less obstructed and compressed than they would when you are lying in a flat position.

Some mattress manufacturers even offer split adjustable beds so that a snoring partner can adjust their side to an angle that reduces their snoring while the other side stays flat or at a reduced elevation.

  • Use pillows – Pillows are another way that you can elevate your head to help alleviate snoring. There are also wedge pillows, designed to provide comforting support to keep you elevated throughout the night.  These allow your chin to stay above your throat and help you sleep undisturbed because, unlike using stacked pillows, you are less likely to have to adjust them throughout the night.
  • Anti-snoring mouthpiece – Anti-snoring mouthpieces are another way to help mitigate snoring. These devices are inserted into the mouth to reposition the jaw and tongue so that air can flow more freely.

There are two types of anti-snoring mouthpieces, mandibular advancement devices (MADs), which keep the jaw from becoming slack, and tongue-retaining devices (TRDs), which keep the tongue in place so that it doesn’t obstruct the airway.

Best Mattress for Snoring FAQs

Can a mattress reduce snoring?

Certain characteristics of mattresses could help reduce snoring, and others that you may want to avoid. Those who want to alleviate snoring may want to look for a medium-firm to firm mattress. Beds that are too soft may allow sleepers to sink too far into the mattress, which can cause their jaw and throat to relax more than those that offer more support.

Is a firm or soft mattress better for snoring?

Generally, a firmer mattress is better for snoring. This is because softer mattresses may allow sleepers’ heads to sink too far down in the bed, which can lead to more relaxed nasal passages and airwaves. Relaxed nasal passages and airwaves can prevent an uneven airflow, which can increase snoring. But if you sleep on your side to aid in relieving your snoring, a medium-to-soft mattress may be best.

Does a raised mattress help with snoring?

Raised mattresses can help with snoring because they can keep a sleeper’s chin above their throat. Sleeping in this position allows air to flow more evenly through the nose and throat which reduces the chances of snoring.
